IRL - First Month : SoR a success? (1 Viewer)

After the first month of SoR, I'm not thinking this is a successful expansion. Now, personally, I'm slowly taking my 6 man team through things; it's got challenges, but that's OK. I don't raid, so I'm ignoring anything to do with that.

The success I’m referring to is not actually about mechanics, mission, or “conquering” the expansion, rather it’s about how much people are playing – or not playing.

I have 6 gold accounts and play maybe 10 hours a week, the rest of the time I have 4 traders and 2 accounts that forage, fish or do tradeskills to feed the traders. I sell items from the missions and any named I manage to find, collection items, foraged items needed in the current expansion and – most of all – various forms of tradeskills. I usually don’t sell the completed TS level 1 armor bits, but the partially formed elements like round cut gems, Scroll Ability to enchant Honed… The idea is that I sell time. Instead of having to spend time scrounging up the bits and pieces and maybe not have high enough TS in one or the other area, I so that and sell you the result. I also sell consumables like food and drink.

I guess I’ve become less Everquest and more MarketQuest. I do that so I can equip my team with the best possible gear so we spend more actual game time winning than corpse runs. Much of my team is in high end raid gear because it is sellable on my server.

I usually make between 100 and 200 million in a good month. December was a very good month. I’ve done this for the last 5 expansions, so my data set is pretty good. What I’ve seen after the holidays is … crickets. Same stuff for sale, always the lowest prices (it’s fake money so I’d rather make 10 plat than see you make 11 plat). There just isn’t a market. I see upticks on the weekends, but I think the average guy has checked out of this expansion due to it’s well documented challenges. Maybe that will pick up, but winter time in the US is usually a heavy play time due to being stuck inside.

I see in this patch they are adding a new port. I think they see the same thing as I see. We may see other “easy-mode” assists, or more double experience times. They wanted to try a challenging expansion, and that’s what we got. They may have misjudged the market. I wonder if people will come back?

Even the main forums are dead. It's the same 15-ish people complaining to each other non-stop about the same things without pause. I didn't pick up this expansion myself, but mainly because IRL stuff is in the way until end of the year, so I figured I'd just pick it up as part of the next expansion since the pre-order rewards were completely useless drivel this time around, but so are the regular expansion perks. 2 shared bank accounts? Big whoop, especially with persona now. Haven't needed a shared bank account for years as is already.

They got my money, I am having fun.

Less people around, less Kens and Karens about.

I'd start by just saying DBG really missed their mark with this SoR expansion.
It's not like we haven't seen this before (looking at you Broken Mirror) where DB wants to "challenge" players by way of difficult zone traversal and baked in annoyances, not to mention a host of bugs with quests, faction etc...
All that being said, the missions are a joke. Brute force and completely ignoring mechanics wins 3/4 group missions while mindlessly achieving "Savior" for some of them also LOL.
Personally I have had no trouble getting my 5 box everywhere, CoTH was back after week 1 so tagged the mages back in for easy ports. Between that and campfires SoR is easy to get around in.

It does seem like daily player counts are dwindling a bit though, likely due not much else going on except their weekly raid lockouts now.
I know at least for my main's guild there are still a few alts getting paragon and challenger done.
Everyone's mains are already aa capped and geared in T3 group crafted w/ raid weapons. No reason to be on grinding anything aside from augments or TS items.

Only zone that feels "challenging" is Labyrinth of Spite and only because it feels like a rushed, buggy mess of a zone. Not sure annoyance and accidental deaths was the challenge that DBG was hoping for.
Not to rip on DBG too hard here though, they really gave us a good effort here with the small team they have to dedicate to EQ.
I'm holding out hope that they will improve things via new ports, addressing mission mechanics and adjusting some drop rates.
It's a bit like putting a band-aid on a gushing head wound, but I think it's the best we can hope for currently.

the big downfall is its everquest not super mario 3 ... i get them wanting to get away from easy travel like the last few expansions but they crapped the bed on this and its glaringly obvious, it is simply too much even for non boxers.

the content is subpar the missions are a joke and for the first time in many years i can say once im done with the mask quest/evolve chain etc (which is another fail in my opinion because the tradeskill system in eq is garbage) it will be the first time i have raidlogged in a long time ... if the next expansion is anything like this i will not be giving them my money and going full f2p on test ... im really disappointed in this dumpster fire of hot garbage ...

i should not be surprised since its tied into PoR which is still hands down the worst expansion ever released ... im toying with the idea of not even doing the group side of the game and just waiting on the t2 raids ... if those are a fail theyre in trouble as i see it

1/10 stars from me

I think I’m in the minority but I enjoyed it. The moving around part took a while to figure out but once I did I didn’t mind it all. Thought it added some depth like the old days having to run across norrath and praying nothing got you along the way.

honestly think this was the beginning of the problems too. They're so tied to connecting with/redoing old expansions that how could we expect anything but another clunker from the clunker that was PoR?

U guys noticed Rk.II spells rate drop sucks… or its just me…
Also i agree with autofollow pathing… sucks a lot of deads…
Finished partisans and mercenary till vortex, just zoned into laberynt….

they're "fixing" it with the patch next week

I'm on s TLP but saw this in the test patch notes.

- Added a new teleport item that is locked behind progression. Ask Tsikut about travel.

Looks like they are addressing it?
I believe that will take you to Ruined Relic zone, whish is OK because it allows you to bypass Arcstone. But the other absolute travel nightmare is in Spite, that zone just blows period imo.

Spite isn't too bad once you learn which mobs see-invis. Breaking a room is still a PITA, but once it is broke, it can be kept clear easily. The sewers are also probably one of the worst areas, especially with fish you cant get off aggro easily.

if by addressing you mean they make you slog through a nightmare of drops into freeport and getting stuck and mobs warping from above to do the progression in order to get it than i guess you could say its "helping"? honestly once 90% of players finish group content in this expansion they wont be coming back to it anyway ... its kind of useless ... it should be available with like a 3-5 hr timer per use on it at first and than as you progress the timer gets less ... im not even gonn abother using it as once im done in SOR prog im not returning to these zones for anything

I honestly haven't even tried to learn spite yet. I'm still in the process of getting a couple new toons to max AA, and then I'll actually start playing the expansion things, but I can honestly say spite will be the last zone I do.

As tough as it is to move around; if your in a guild, this expansion is done for many folks. They raid killed the task they raid killed the hunter, they group killed the missions and had collectors out collecting. SO one month in and they are done with everything but the raids. I equated the original moving around to TBL in some aspects although they didnt lock you out of zones completely. Also first patch is going to make moving easier and they havent dummied it down and made a easier version to fight like GMM. I personally like the expansion even though im down to hunter and collects. I dont spend as many hrs but the named dont pop every other spawn. Spite isnt really an issue once you figure it out. I was there day one chasing drops. You cant expect what is their T3 zone to be open flowing so one group can camp it all.

I really like the difficulty of this expansion, especially the last zone. It was a pain to get to the sewers and the damn fish that would be out of the water aggroing you when going down the ramp. The mobs looks awesome, the detail seems really good.

The trick to getting to the sewers - instead of going through the hedge mazes in the north/south to get to the interior ground level hallways, use the gates in the east/west instead that lead directly to the stupid swinging blade traps. You'll have to kill 2-4 driders total and one set of husks to get to that point from ZI. Lev up, drop through the pits, and run to the quest guy Sezzic while maintaining your altitude up around the ceiling. If you jam up into the corner by him you won't pull aggro from the fishes and can COH your group or run everyone one by one there.

Stupid fishes suck though, I ended up just jumping in the water and killing them before I pulled anything nearby.

They removed the fish and replaced them with alligators with the last test patch fyi, so live should be getting that change tomorrow.

The only thing that defines success in EQ is enjoyment. That usually comes with new levels, loot or new toons. This expansion offers new levels, new loot and a new race class combo.
So it should be a success.

After a month it is hard to tell. They take a month to vacation and then finally get around to fixing bugs (some older ones). But by then everyone has gobbled up the new available content. Ask me next year if it was successful. IMO it is too soon to ask.

It seems people like missions this year but there are also complaints about travel, named camps being worse then before, raid loot costing too much etc. Aside from SG and CW it feels like people really don't like zones in SoR.

Too early to tell but I would say not a success unless more adjustments come next month.

I dont normally say this.........But i'm glad i didnt shell-out for this expansion, even for my Lifetime sub i didnt buy it.

Agree with you, after getting the travel figured out it has been fun!
