This isn't a thread about min-maxing, strongest classes, or raid utility.
This is about

We all know SKs are powerful, sure—
…but maybe you chose a Paladin because you dreamed of wielding the holy Soulfire.
Yes, melee classes dominate right now—
…but you wanted to be Norrath’s Gandalf, so you went Wizard.

I’d love to hear your personal reasons.
Was it lore? Roleplay fantasy? The aesthetics? Maybe you just love trees and picked Druid for that?

I personally love playing Monks.
What draws me to them is that they’re not just martial artists—they awaken their inner strength through meditation and self-discipline.
I ,as a Japanese person ( thx ChatGPT translation ! ), feel a deep connection to the Zen-like mindset they embody.
In EQ2, even though the buffs from Quellious were more geared toward healers, I still chose to roleplay a Monk devoted to her. It just felt right.

before i started boxing i mained necros for many years. if i had to play a single class again it would still be necros they have so much in their toolbox. they are hands down the strongest class in eq

Ignore my original vanilla characters before I quit the first time.... later, during Velious, I was playing enchanter main, and it was boring at raid level (tash, die, repeat). So I traded an orb of the infinite void for a ranger with epic... and after getting the whole guild to petition to get a name change, that ended up being my main until quitting the second time. So it was really "first class to pop up on an account trading site that I felt was reasonably priced".

ranger, just speaks to me, that exploring, a tool set of skills and spells, bows, swords, it just to me is the perfect class type, i usually end up focusing on 2handed weapons and bows in most games that have them, because thats how i played my ranger, and its fun to me

Well, I'm going back many years on this! I boxed 3 monks, sha, bard, and clr from PoP to OoW. In OoW I realized that I now needed a tank for group content, so I rolled a Warrior. Still used my monk as a main till DoDH then day 1 of that launch my guild leader asked me to main change to Warrior. Tens of Thousands of deaths later, I'm still a Warrior main.

My First main was a ranger I played it for 2 months but it was so under-powered I ended up deleting that character.
I then created a bard that was my main for about 6-8 months.
Around the same time I also created a barbar Shaman and leveled it to 9 and made the run to EV to sell SOW in EC Tunnel.

About the time Velious came out I was getting sick of not really being able to chat effectively while playing so I started playing the shaman as my main.
He was the only character I played consistently till I Retired from raiding in 2008.

For the next few years I boxed a lot and played SK, warrior, Monk in addition to my shaman. During this time the monk would have been my "main"

But when I think of EQ i will always think of my Shaman first and foremost because that is the toon I as playing while raiding and actually being social.

Clr and Rog were and still are my favorites ones. Most of my D&D characters have been rog cus they get to sneak around and do allot of fun things and clr is kinda the backbone of a group. Then theres the statistics that most clr seem to be women. Think about 60% of the clr on my raid team are female. Seems to hold for most I have met along the time also.

War - Out of need of the community for another Raid War when I joined.

I was bugged by a real life friend of mine to play for a few years before I finally took up the mantle of playing.
The guild he was apart of on Ayonae Ro needed a War tank to help with raiding. They were not hard core raiders. Just doing what they could as a guild. Luclin was the expansion when I started and we were mostly a family guild that tried to take out as many unkeyed targets as we could.

My RL friend and I went on to other servers and crushed lots of content in better guilds. Many expansion Raid completions over the years with our first being PoP. We had a number of server firsts with our last guild until he retired and left the game. I have been retired from raiding for a while now and just playing for fun with what I can do and what time I have to play.

It was several years before I ever took on a 2nd account. Eventually found my way to RedGuides after bemusement of the limitations that InnerSpace and ISBoxer provided and never looked back.

If I had to do it all over again, I probably would have chosen SK if I was still going to tank. Bard or Shammy in that order if I knew more about the game when I started. I have no misgivings about having War as my main. I love being the tank. In game or in RL.

War is still and will always be my main.

First necro at launch...because it seemed cool as hell to be able to solo and have a badass pet...and it was...

Then later on druid...because I was able with friends to farm a manastone, fungi, jboots, and clickstaff...which made me overpowered as hell.
I could heal better than any cleric, port, octa kite spectre island...fucking fun as hell.
Then war...because pets got squishy and needy a steady tank to take the hits so the druid/necro could pown shit
Then mage...because...why only 3 box when you can 4 box?
Then enchanter...because I got sick of asking for C2/haste...
Then a second mage...because why only 2 pets when you can have 3?

So...i became a solo boxer right out of the gates.

I picked the Ogre SK mainly because of the exp penalty and I thought Ogres frontal stun resistance was the benefit to make up for the exp penalty.

Ranger. They were really needed way back when for their tracking abilities in groups and raids. I dislike clerics, warriors and bards so not many other choices. :)

Game used to be all about filling out those groups so if you didn't have something to bring to the group you were often left out. Did not really "grow up" and come into her full capacity until hit level 85. And now that the game has changed to no grouping she is the perfect driver for my team or just to kick around doing hunter's etc

Edit oh yeah Ranger was my high school mascot. Had nothing to do with creating one though

My first ever character was a rogue (2002), still one of my favorites but really hard to find groups now a days. So even though you can solo a rogue with a merc, it takes a lot of time and quite a lot of deaths to do so. I had a really nice Cleric as well but the responsibility of healing groups got overwhelming and it just got to the point, especially when raiding, just seemed more like a job to me and became less fun. My other favorite is the Monk. I have always loved playing a monk do to the abilities of FD, Mend, pulling abilities and the melee damage it can do as well. Play with a healer merc and get fully buffed by shammy, ranger, cleric buffs, you can pretty much take on anything out there pretty easy solo. I don't do a lot of grouping, mostly just when my guild members want to PL me. But 98% of the time I love being solo. Always had a hard time with the kiting classes. I just like to stand still while fighting LMBO. I am a simple man.

Ditto on the ranger.

A friend introduced me to the game. He was a War so I went with the cleric for the heals. I think I started when Kunark was released.

Dark elf Warrior was my first character. Because....that combo seemed to be the rarest type of race/class combo at the time. And....you know...Dark Elves 💯. Still play him to this day!

Oh and as far as souls are concerned

I messed with a few different classes until settling into an Enchanter. I enjoy being support and good Enchanters were scarce on my server. You learn to live below 40% mana all the time, and we stay busy working multiple mezz clocks simultaneously. For years I had an analog clock on my desk to help me time recasts. My wife and I ended up selling that and her very nice druid in 2004.

Troll Shaman. Innoruuk’s Favorite Mistake.

I didn’t pick Troll Shaman for balance, meta, or spreadsheets.
I picked it because I wanted to channel divine hatred and smell like I crawled out of a swamp—which I did.
Praise Innoruuk. Pass the fungus ale.

Other classes pray to gods of love, honor, and nature.
I commune with Innoruuk, Father of Hate, who lovingly cursed me with the ability to rot your face and heal you afterward, just to prove I could.

I got buffs, debuffs, dots, heals, root, and a wolf form.
You ever get healed by something that looks like it just ate a diseased alligator? No? You're welcome.

Lore-wise? I was born in Grobb, exiled to Gukta, came back, got exiled again—I lose track. All part of Innoruuk's plan.
We endure. We stink. We win.

Roleplay? I’m the swamp prophet your guild didn’t know it needed.
I don’t just follow Innoruuk—I make everyone else wish they did, too.

In conclusion:
Troll Shaman. Best class. Best god. Best swamp.
Now please stand still while I buff you with something that smells like fermented frogs.

Wizard, I am old too, but used to we were so useful, everyone wanted ports and I was enjoying being needed, I created a cleric for the rez same reason.
No one needs any longer.
i still find much use in clerics and wizards, but hard to find strange wizards and clerics who I don't gotta worry about reporting or causing other problems.

My friend started playing about a month before I did.. and he got me into it. As a result, he highly recommended Enchanter. With talks about how I'll be able to make all sorts of cash with jewel crafting (Spoiler alert, i lost money...). And how they are often sought after for groups,. I did grow to enjoy the fact my presence entirely changed the dynamic of a group, but by the time raids came around.. they were boring so i ended up boxing a 2nd char.

Truth though, I think he just wanted the hook up on some clarity .

Way back in early 2000 I created my Bard because I found out about fear kiting and the various iterations of charm killing and loved it

My first and still main toon is a Monk. The idea of wielding a staff (2hr) and running around in a robe, and being able to fall down and be safe, really made me happy. And attaining a tranquil staff, and later a brawl stick, was icing on the cake.

This reminds me of a smol alt I had waaay back when. Flailing Limbs - iksar monk. I remember trying to fear/fd kite for dps solo, fuck that was a waste of time lol. I loved him tho

HAH. Ya. I did that as well. Back when Intimidation actually worked on a mob, even with the failures, and the timing issues. But I ground through EW Ulthor's for a few levels. Such good times!

When the berserker first came out, the idea of a 2h melee character that got extra swings, the ability to snare, and could summon their own throwing items sounded really appealing.

Began wth every intention to play a ranger until my brother told me it would be difficult (impossible cause "they suck") finding groups. Picked a barb because I'm a tall dude and thought it made sense. Picked a warrior because that was "easy" to find groups.

Finding groups was definitely easy. Getting to the group was definitely not!

So many hours running in the dark following the mashed loc key. Hands drawn garbage maps. Training everywhere. Running to a designated location and just dieing and hoping that i got a rez from the group I was trying to join.

The sucky barb vision did get me used to not caring what the game graphics looked like I guess. Makes it easy these days to box with most of my UI covered in Lua GUIs. :ohdear:

One of my favorite memories was running through the dark on the way to a group in lguk and literally running right into the ancient cyclops. Don't remember my exact level but it was low enough and I was risk adverse enough as a never solo war that I was not sure I'd win. Was totally worth it though. JBoots!

When Kunark was released I was in heaven! I ditched the blind ass, no regen human monk and graduated to an Iks Monk. Beer drinking and monks went hand in hand for me. FD and the regen was almost cheating. Bio break? NP. Beer run to the garage, NP. I was fortunate to get a fungi tunic early on so it was almost funny watching the regen. The xp penalty was a bummer but the benefits far outweighed this. I was the crazy guy who did the work and was able to walk through Freeport unmolested. That took a ton of Rebby's Rat Whiskers and a lot of Tumpy Tonics. Good memories!

Early on, I went ranger. They seemed like a jack of all trades type and it was cool being able to swap between melee and bow damage. I had a good time running around killing old raid targets and headshot swarming.

Then i saw an SK swarming and soloing old raids and that was all she wrote, I made a switch after 15 years.

Now I main caster dps because they arent as gear dependant and I can avoid doing prog and hero AA achievments for the most part but still feel like I'm doing my job on raids.

I only jumped into EverQuest about seven years ago ‘cause I was all about that chunky low-poly look and was tinkering with my own little Unity3D game. During my research I stumbled on some Titanium-client screenshots of a party smashing a sand giant (I think?) and thought, “Dang, I need to see those animations in motion!”

Cue me binge-scrolling Allakhazam before rolling my very first toon. I went with a paladin purely for the Slay Undead AA - sounded epic at the time (spoiler: kinda meh in practice 😅).

And yeah… here we are, years later, and I’m still grinding away on my 3 palas in EQ. Some habits die hard!

First main was dwarf cleric. I decided on the cleric to be certain I could get a group. Still my main and oldest toon across all games and platforms. Furthermore, in all the other games ive played I have also played healers or support class, interesting as my second creation was a bard.

My original was an Ikky Necro. Had no idea how it's mechanics would have been at end game. I just liked the concept of having a skeleton pet to tank and be able to cast spells at the same time.
Made me feel like I was a character in a Dragonlance novel! :)

First toon in '99 was a paladin because I've always liked playing the holy warrior in rpg's and I heard there was holy swords in the game. In the first week I saw a necro absolutely mowing down multiples of mobs that I couldn't even solo kill one of...turned to the dark side and didn't look back (until I started heavily boxing ofc)
