Funny - What Truly made You Choose Your Class? Share the Soul Behind Your Choice!

I honestly do not have any class I feel this way about and I enjoy using all of them in my teams.

I did start as a shaman, but I don't hold any great sentiment for them becuse of it.

Lazyness. I just wanna be along for the ride I dont wanna work for it. I went mage, nice one button dps macro. Dont gotta pay attention to hardly anything, just be super stoned. Follow group around hitting assist, and that button. Sure I could do a bit more dps if i tried harder, my buddies dont care. They're all half afk yelling at their kids anyways. We'r a fun group.

Rogue. There's nothing cooler than sneaking around, pickpocketing, and backstabbing. They are the rockstar class.

Sorry for the topic tangent, I recently returned from a several year hiatus because my son wants to play, can someone point me to a relatively decent write-up describing each class' play-type? I did my best to talk him through it but, (A). I don't have the vocabulary to properly explain it apparently and, (B) I guess it's easier for him to understand if the description comes from someone else rather than me... I was reading through this thread hoping something here would help, I'm trying to get him to pick one and play it to at least learn how to play and basic class mechanics, so far I think he's made a dozen toons and probably hasn't earned 20 levels across all of them... I did a quick scan through the forums and didn't see a consolidated list, any chance someone has one bookmarked or readily at hand?

My original toon back in '99 was a Druid mainly because they were labeled as a "jack of all trades, master of none" and I thought it would be a great choice to get a feel for the game and the options available.

Ended up switching to a Monk later (Velious era) and thoroughly enjoyed that.

Since I've returned I'd say my main is a Shaman, I love the concept behind them. That primal, tribalistic idea of pulling the spirits around you to assist your allies and devastate your enemies.

I would try and narrow it down first to which basic play style does he like? Tank/fighter, Combo/fight and cast, Caster.

Also which race does he want to play? That will affect which class he wants.

A google can add a little more basic info without going into stuff he doesn't understand yet:

And bottom line, it's ok to make a dozen or more toons before you find which you like and even more ok to drop that character for one you realize you like even better.

That’s fair, and thanks for the link! Even with the write up targeting classic the general descriptions are helpful.

So... embarrassingly, this will be my first post. I'm just coming back to EQ out of retirement for like... the third time?

Still playing my original character as my main... a wood elf ranger. Started playing back when PoP had recently released, because my fiancée's (at the time) brother suggested I play it. He asked me what class I wanted to be, and, having recently seen LoTR... I wanted to be a ranger. I had always loved the idea of archery, and tracking, and even though I'm a hetero guy, I thought Legolas was equally hot and cool.

Now, I had no experience with the game whatsoever, and being a hetero guy, I chose a Female Wood Elf Ranger, believing that I was going to be seeing my character a lot more than just on the character select screen... (yes, I almost exclusively play in 1st person view, so that's kinda my fault, but still...)

I also, equally embarrassingly, didn't realize how many times people had to type someone's name in on the game, (/tells, /invites, /raidinvites, expeditions, quests, etc, etc, etc...) so when it came to naming, I picked a nearly random string of ten letters which caused many people to curse me over the next several years, until SOE finally made available both a name change potion and a gender change potion (Thank Tunare!) and I changed my main's name to a nickname that one of my old guild leaders took to calling me.

I think I've played overall for about 10 years of the past 20, but now I'm having to re-set up my stuff all over again for like the 3rd time. I didn't look forward to trying to use ISBoxer again, because the last time I tried, I couldn't get it to work for me. I'm really not looking forward to even figuring out what all I need to set up on my 5 accounts as is, but at least with RG's Very Vanilla, I'm hoping it will be easier than I expect. Time will tell.

Thanks for having me!

Mod edit: don't post toon names.

**Edit: Thank you to the mod for pointing that out. (insert Wayne's World "We Are Not Worthy" gif here) Was not aware, but am now!**

Wb! There have been lots of changes so things may be easier this time around. And if you feel like leaving put it all on a usb before hand.

Everquest strategy guide made Paladin sound the best.

Then actually playing for a bit and wanting to bind my paladin elsewhere I found out about a quest out of Neriak - but I had to make a necromancer to do the quest - discovered I liked the necromancer a lot more than the paladin so stuck with it.

It was just so much more effective snaring a mob, fearing it, and having your pet beat on it than taking the hits and trying to heal yourself as a paladin.

I find there is the soul for the choice, then if it is practicle. I started with a Pally, because I felt drawn to it. I switched to a monk(cool class), then switched due to too many buttons to hit. I now play a bard, and am thrilled!

Thank you for the welcome back. Unfortunately, the previous times I "left" were not exactly intentional, and I've had issue with some of my backups in the past, but it's all just water under the bridge at this point. I don't suppose you have any good resources I could look at for returning players to get set up again? I've spent a few hours the past couple of days looking at posts here to see if I could find anything useful, but no joy so far.

Thanks again to everyone involved in this site. Hopefully I'll be a member for years to come.

Deep down inside who doesn't want to be a Wizard? It was a truly cool thing to be a High Elf Wizard. How fun is it to just blow stuff up? Great choice.

I originally started as a Monk in '99. The pure melee aspect drew me to it. And that kind of traveling lone wolf thing... And the FD/Mend was pretty cool. Then I tried a Rogue and blasted thru the levels and was a much needed group member back in the day. When I came back to the game I knew I wanted to play a Tank with my Shaman that I had leveled up at some point. I had pretty good previous experience with FD from Monk so I went with SK. Ran SK/SHM and pushed to Max LVL and AA and honestly just grew to love the SK. At some point I added NEC in the team for DPS and given the chance I would probably start the whole game over and roll a NEC. Evil as heck, FD, Taps, Pet is powerful and DPS can get pretty insane if all my DOTs get rolling. And did I mention Evil? Darkelf is my favorite race. Have DE mask on most my high level crew - at least the ones that aren't naturally DE.

The first toon, which I still play is a Cleric, because I like helping people (well some people anyway) and never suffered with failure to get a raid spot, but jeez soloing (2001-ish) as a Cleric sucked badly. I remember getting to a whole level 8 and almost giving up.

But rezzing made up for it, so i carried on. Now after far too much time (played time), I still have him and enjoy playing so i suppose that means i made a good choice :-)

@Algar started out as a necro, switched to druid for utility in original EQ and held to that until Kunark came out...then I went Monk/Druid + bard wife for a bit...which was awesome...but when Velious Came out...our little family expanded and finally got a war, wife switched to cleric, and I added an enchanter to get our little family up to 5...eventually filled that 6th seat with a mage...and manually boxed that team till a few years back when my wrists gave out...wife eventually switched to a bard....so we lost the cleric but the druid held us together for quite a while healing wise...just sucked no rezz
