I have 3 legacy accounts that have never used MQ and never will all dating to 1999 ~ 2002 . What I want to do is create a team with Bard + tank + healer and 3 DPS merc's.

This is strictly for my own amusement but I'm at a loss for what I want to use for tank and healer so I'm taking suggestions. I suppose that choice will affect whether I use caster or melee DPS mercs.

Give me your thoughts!

Mercs are only good for so long. If you are using MQ, there is absolutely no reason to not run 3 more FTP accounts. Costs nothing and far exceeds in-game mercs in viability.

SK and SHM to go with the BRD. You will do fine and mercs wont hurt.

war, shm, zerk, + 1 or 2 merc healers, you good
+1 for warrior. With only mercs as dps, warrior autoattack dps/hate is enough to Tank any mob in the game.

I tried alt-tab boxing a zerk and it did not work out.

I would Vote for (when alt-tab boxing): WAR,BRD,SHM + 3x dps merc or WAR,BRD,BST,1-2x dps merc, 1-2x cleric merc

there are a lot of threads on groups and group makeups. would behoove you to take a look at those - you will likely get some shorter responses with "answering the same question fatigue"

important points:

- play what makes you happy
- don't worry about min maxing until min maxing is more important than fun/happy
- understand your needs/wants will change as your goals change
- the "holy trinity" is alive and well; tank, healer (clr or shm), cc
- healer mercs can help, but they fall pretty shy on actual characters, even just autogranted f2p cleric is way better
- you definitely want the CC/ADPS from a chanter or bard
- you definitely want to get 75/80+% AA before moving on in levels - zooming to 120 and having no matching AAs will hurt you
- ber or rog or ber ber is fine - but you are hurting yourself not having a bard with them

dps mercs have gone up and down in their usage and functionality over time --- personally I only keep a pocket cleric on all my toons for rezzing in a pinch. outside of that, a 1-time krono'd f2p toon is gonna be a better toon --- it might not be "merc fits in my irl budget" for playability of the game, f2p wins.

sk/clr if you're lazy and want ezmode
sk/shm if you want a little more *bite*
war/clr if you want to be able to do a bit of raiding on the war
war/shm if you want to feel like you're struggling now and again

pal/shm if you want to "mix it up"
pal/clr if you want to kill things FUCKING SLOWLY

One thing that occurs to me is that using a persona on that healer to also have a DPS class would likely pay off at some point. There are some things you'll be doing that a SHD could do just fine with a single (or even double) healer merc and the PC DPS will increase kill speed over a merc. It may even be viable to forgo the healer completely at lower levels.

Any tank can work:
- Warrior can do better when swapping screens once you pop your defensive cooldowns etc. They have good passive threat and auto attack aggroe

- SK has great AoE threat, some passive healing during attacking and can hit epic/visage as a set it and forget it option on nameds. the DPS kit on an sk really depends on being attentive to it to hit dots and taps.

- Paladins are super strong AE threat 100+, underrated dps option now with BoTF (especially against undead), offers extra group healing and rez if you're between the shaman and it. If you have a decent kill rate, you may find paladin to be your most reliable option for survivability with good dps if you keep BoTF up.

Out of the three, id say SK would be the hardest to get the most out of during boxing, followed by paladins and then warrior being the most alt-tab box friendly. If you move towards automation, you can't go wrong with a knight class since the most you can hit keys with them, the better they are.

Shaman has splashes and recourse with wave healing, not to mention multiple ways to add HoTs to the tank/group. They bring slows, limited CC ability, good melee adps with epic, Combo dots 105+ are decent added dps if you run a heal merc to help out. While cleric is a great healer, i find shamans have too much utility and versatitlity to pass up. Druids imo arent alt-tab friendly.

Thanks all, I suppose I left out that this crew has my old main bard who's 125 and fairly well equipped. I've avoided even having him on the same PC that I use MQ on and I have the two other ancient accounts that have never touched MQ. I have a complete setup for new free accounts that I'm running MQ on but for nostalgia I busted out the old accounts.

Anyway without MQ 3 is the max number of characters I can run and when I searched I found a lot of stuff I used to set up my full crews.

Currently I have the Bard with a Wizard and sort of ghetto kiting with some DPS mercs to help along the way.

No offense taken I just thought it'd be fun to try and put a Heroic 100 tank on one of the accounts and a Heroic 100 healer on another. If I don't get bored or carpal tunnel I'll let y'all know what happened and how it happened.

Thanks for all input!

Nothing beats MQ2. I resisted for 3 days of manual alt-tab ... guess who installed MQ2 again. MQ2 does not simply inject into everquest, but directly into your soul.

You should consider this. During some ban waves, there were people who got accounts banned that weren't on computers with MQ along with people who completely wiped their PC and installed an OS fresh without MQ and new accounts. DBG has some method of banning no matter how you segregate your accounts on your network / computers. So, don't assume your accounts which have never had access to MQ are safe. No one really knows what DBG logs when monitoring MQ usage. So it's impossible to tell what would really insulate anything.

Food for thought...

No. 1: sounds like hear-say... (no offense) or linking by same email/..cc/...
No. 2: DBG creates a hardware fingerprint

But let's try to not hijack this into another ban related thread :)
Please post the relevant ban / theories to the appropriate baspend mega thread HERE. It is not helpful to extrapolate on a reply merely to make a boastful statement with no real contribution to OP's content.
