IRL - January 2026 EQ update (Test: 13th, live: 21st))

I am relatively new here but....Figured after however many years MQ has been active and users have waited on patch day, there would be a general estimate for the roll out of updates hehe as I have not experienced many of them myself. But i will hold my assumptions from now on and sit on my couch hitting the refresh button like a good boy.
Also an interesting tidbit.. MQ (as opposed to MQ2) is fairly new as well new dev team built from the ground up if I recall.

You're all forgetting all the jira tickets that need to be tshirt sized and all the meetings that need to take place to make sure the dev teams stay agile.

(please don't kill me)

I am sad because I made a point to not patch or update but they pushed a client update which blocked login at server screen. /whimper
it is a scheduled patch that requires updating. you can't do any mq until mq is updated.

What to expect on patch days?
When eq patches MQ has to be rebuilt. (you also have to patch EQ --- this way you avoid "Version Mismatch" issues)

Once MQ is updated RG can build - we now have an automated system that rebuilds RG as soon as it is updated - which means our previous method of "let's give it a quick test" is no longer there, and sometimes there ends up being another smaller patch later to correct if something got missed - so re-check on patch days if you are having issues.

EQ could change literally anything and it would require the way MQ interacts with that portion of EQ to be completely reworked. It is normally just offsets, sometimes struct changes --- with the large changes eq has been making over the past few months (updates and backend improvements) there are more things than just offset changes that are happening, so it can certainly be a lot of work for the devs.

Curious when Very Vanilla will be updated?

MacroQuest for Live servers:
MacroQuest for Test server

EQ patches go like this: (in theory)
2nd* tue/wed = test "real" patch
3rd* wed = live patch
4th* tue/wed = test "true up"

the tue over the wed is a more recent thing (I suspect klanderso has more to do with that, and having time to ensure working stuff before the weekend and upset people - klanderso is pretty awesome)
* holidays subject to cause shifts in days or even week

Test is notorious for being like "oops we forgot the 'dont crash plz' file, gotta patch again", or "woops we added +1 to crashing, we meant -1", so "on paper" it is double the patches, but very frequently ends up being more than double the work (i imagine, I'm not doing the work - I'd love to learn enough at some point to help facilitate doing so, however).

Test also introduces new stuff before it goes to live - over the past couple of years EQ has been making a lot of substantial code changes - not just a "here's a monthly patch" where they adjusted an aoe value or something simple. On top of that, once you get into October/November you start seeing stuff from the expansion going onto the test server, even if that stuff isn't released yet. The good news is that gives the MQ dev(s) more time to implement it, the bad news is that it is more work. Thankless unnoticed (for the most part) work.

MQ itself is open source and by volunteer(s) - RG which builds and distributes that is obviously paid for. When MQ is updated, RG does the best it can to immediately build and make available an updated build
If you wanted to show your appreciation to the main MQ dev for their volunteer work:

may be an unpopular opinion.... but why don't we monetize MQ2 so there are paid developers not operating on donations? We pay RG to basically have access to MQ2, but MQ2 doesnt benefit. I would be willing to pay for MQ2 specifically, outside of random donations. Personally.

Mq is open source by volunteers.

Brain does more, with more response than anyone.

Brain would still do the work lol 20+ years of REing EQ, brain probably has more singular knowledge of eq codebase than any other person on the planet lol

If you find someone you want to pay to help brain out, by all means :p

Yes, and nobody has mentioned this yet, but feel free to tip the developers (@brainiac and @dannuic) too. I usually do about every other or every 3rd patch. They do a bunch to take this game to another level. And just like @Sic said, sometimes things need to be reworked. It could just be a me thing, but after the patch just now, I can't use the find window to Ctrl + Click to run somewhere. I just get the yellow dust trail now. And when a toon zones, I crash. These are things that happen, and developers are aware, and will fix things. It's not just a customer service call where someone asks me if my computer is plugged in LOL. These guys work hard. Yes we pay monthly subs and buy (about a dozen in my case) multiple pluggins. There are lots of fixes that need done, and they don't fix themselves.

So thank you to all that do this stuff so we can play our favorite game on a whole new level!

Is that your only issue? Mine seems way more borked. No text in pop up windows (then crashes), party names blank, trying to tab socials doesn't update, custom button in party window invisible, etc...

I had assumed it was still just kinks being worked out due to earlier posts, but your post makes me wonder if mine is more borked than it should be. Is it a me thing or is it just a wait for another update thing?

As soon as I noticed the Nav had issues, and toons crashed everytime I zoned, I closed everything out (for self-preservation for fear of "data being sent to DBG or something") and figured that there would undoubtedly be a fix coming from RedGuides, and to just be patient.

Your other issues were more than likely something I would have come across eventually. I just didn't give them the time to present themselves.

I'll try again in a couple hours, and if no luck from the MQ gods, I'll try again in the morning :)

… hitting the refresh button ..
Pro tip: you can watch the live and test update threads just like any other and get an email when they get updated and save your f5 button some wear and tear

brain is working on fixes - thanks for everyone being patient.

as soon as a new build is available it will be up

Looks like EasyFind may have an issue. Getting

Could not find connection to “Guild Hall”

when trying /travelto guild hall from the guild lobby. I can travelto the plane of knowledge from the lobby without issues.

yes, and that will remain that way until brain has a chance to look at it.

if you look the find window in the guild lobby is now different
