Discussion - How long did it take you to get comfortable with the tools here?

For the most part I'm having a great time. That said, I've lost count of how many times now I've shut EQ down because something isn't working properly.
BUT, I always come back for more lol.
Curious if this is the normal process? Or am I just a slow learner?

maybe rage quitting was being a bit overdramatic. Just shutting down EQ until I'm ready to solve the problem haha.

the intro videos are awesome, i know people say "watch the videos" all the time but they are right ... this is coming from a guy who turns wrenches for a living. i know jack and squat about computers and the videos got me up and moving. from there i politely leaned on our community for answers and help through forum posts and direct messages.

as long as your respectful and polite 9 times out of 10 this community will help you. i don't play eq anymore ... i play MQ and give these forums a lot of credit for teaching me.

like @Doc James said don't rage quit, take a breather and come back. its a lot to ingest but if you approach it properly it is a lot of fun.

I think that's my main issue at the moment. Not giving myself more room to learn and actually absorbing the important information plastered everywhere.

I think I would put it more like...

MQ adds a large level of "simplicity" to a complex game. But to get there, can be a complex journey sometimes.

Slow and steady is the best way I can describe it and having patience to watch/read and then try. Even thinking you're going to make a crew respond like Sic after spending 15 minutes watching a video is a tall ask (impossible if you ask me). It took me a couple of weeks/months to get comfortable with the basics when I started and I still learn daily that I have a long way to go even 2 years later.

Find a lower level empty zone, get comfortable with one thing at a time and when you find yourself hung up, ask questions here. The more detailed you are and explain what you have tried, what tool(s) you're using, and what you're trying to accomplish, the better help you will get. Hard to assist when a post says "This toon won't do what I want" (as an example). You can also join the Discord channel and watch. Lots of folks ask questions there and those with tons of knowledge answer them all the time and you can learn and find out things you never knew existed.

I've been playing with all the tools for about six months now. I still somehow forget to pause or take my toons off chase. No big deal right? Until your main assist zones into Shadow Haven from the spirit fades zone. And your character sitting at zone in from guild hall hauls ass to you. No invis, no cares, no chance of making it to you.

Then I swap to the character later and wonder why he's at bind.

I'm getting better at hitting my pause hotkeys but still.

It took a while for me, but if you're not a perfectionist you can get a working box group fairly quickly. However, getting an optimized / efficient group is much harder. I still tweak things and learn things constantly. But a 'working' box group is still a billion times better than manual play.

I first tried RG/MQ back in 2016 for a few months, but I was gone until just after TBL came out. it definitely took me a while before i felt like i had any footing underneath me.

I wrote my first kiss condition in spring of 2019, and I was super nervous about it.

Been using MQ after a friend showed it to me. Love it. I find it hard to enjoy EQ without the ease it provides. Its been a few months now and I still learn something new almost every month. I went from using kissassist to rgmercs and now cwtn. So long as you take the time to do the research, it gets easier to use and understand what your looking at or where to find an answer to a question most of the times. Patch days are the only time you'll find me offline most of the time. I still look things up on the daily but have definitely gotten more comfortable with it. I also have a friend and we tend to brainstorm for any answers we may need which helps.

Figuring out one thing leads to wondering how to do three other things, all of which has personally led to an ever expanding enjoyment of this game. Enjoy the ride, the rest will tend to take care of itself I think.

I'm comfortable enough to be uncomfortable. I'm constantly referring to short zone names, plugin settings, the KA wiki, and Sic's hotkeys guides to keep myself generally up to speed. If I can get to the point where I can write my own LEM reactions, I'll consider myself comfortable.

I started with hardly anything plugin wise always reading and lurking wondering if I should try another plugin or something. Slowly adding then asking myself why I didn't do it sooner. Probably took me 3 or 4 years and I still am not a expert on anything. That being said having less to start with I didn't have the issues that can pop up by having everything in the world loaded up. This site and plugs and macros are as close as you can get to plug and play. As a person who started on other sites and came over Redguides is like getting spoon fed by your mom compared to eating batwing cereal with Ozzy. Just takes a crap ton of learning and patience and a few long walks depending on your level of program knowledge and yoda calming abilities. Well well worth it imo.

It took me several months to feel like I really had it down. But its definitely a curve that can be steep for many, and even steeper for many others. In one of Sic's videos he talks about getting your socials/hotbuttons set up to manage moving and managing your team, before you do anything else in the game. I cant stress enough how accurate and important that is. How to pause your automation, move your toons, set a camp, manage how your toons assist, cancel a camp and move again. Managing and mastering these commands is essential to having a positive experience, as well as your toon's behavior based on how you set your parameters.

All I can say is stick with it. The process of learning the magic of these tools can be just as fun as seeing them in action in the game. Good luck!

If you are prone to rage quitting - dont try raid boxing - cos when things go south - they go south in the most magnificent ways multiplied by 54, and you just have to laugh as your entire raid force crumples under the weight of your screwup.

Just start small and start easy. Dont go straight to the end zone, try the hardest mission and then cry in frustration when it doesnt work.

Go to an easy zone and practice stuff until you know it. Moving, Grouping, Chasing, Twisting, Mezzing, Pulling, switching target, turning features off and on as you go, Messaging between toons.
Ask questions if you've really been trying - and give precise examples of what is going wrong.

Folks here are the most helpful you will ever find - but Nobody is here to spoonfeed you. Dont post just say "Stupid MQ doesnt work..grumble grumble, can i get my money back...grumble grumble"

Well, I'm honestly just in the beginning stages at this point. I've got about 2 weeks of time left on my krono burn of my first group left. It's going well, 1 of my 5 boxes is 115 (bard) and she will be max aa for 115 probably this weekend. My other 4 boxes are mostly max AA minus general at 114 and getting close to 115, while my main (sk) is chewing up 115 AA, and depending on playtime, will be close to 115 max by the end of the weekend, they have tons of AAs.

I am absolutely still getting used to the tools here. Every day or so ill discover a nuance that I missed before, and my biggest issue is I turn into a dog with a new bone. I have to chew that bastard until I figure out exactly how it works and what I'm doing wrong. That's how I tend to learn, break it really good, then take a long time to fix it, and by that time I know it really well! Then I find something else! Rinse and repeat!

I use CWTN plugins and I figured out pretty quickly how to maneuver my whole team with a few hotkeys (thanks to @Sic for his hotkey list for getting me started), so now things rarely go south. I'd say overall it took me less than 6 hours to figure everything out and that's not all at once; that's over the course of a couple weeks of gameplay. The CWTN plugins made my life infinitely easier and my EQ gameplay infinitely more enjoyable.

my knowledge of creating good INI's is still a dumpster fire - my conditionals never work - I can even break a CWTN plugin if left alone long enough. But I have never rage quit - at this point I honestly think I have as much fun dialing in a teams INI's and creating all my hotkey as I do physically playing the game. It's the game within the game for me.

I find the programming aspect interesting. Its the syntax that usually has me in a rage. Then I see the error and walk away for a coffee break. fix the error, play on till the next brilliant idea of how to mess up my .ini file dawns on me.

I've been on here about 6 months. I'll be honest as long as there is a GUI and someone to explain it to me I do ok. As far as the language. Most of the guys are programmers of some kind and they speak a different language than I do.

Every once in a while another tech stupid person will come on the site. And do my best to tell the smart folks what they are trying to say. LoL. Seriously I have tried a couple times.

Everything can seem difficult until you know what buttons to push. Take your time, set reasonable expectations, and work through things 1 at a time. Trying too many things at once will make things more difficult than they need to be. Troubleshooting is a lot harder as well.

I never even did a conditional statement until 2019 - let alone program anything, and you can go back to see my videos of when I was just an MQ user and not making anything - I talk the same.

a lot of folks get overwhelmed by the new information, and instead of trying to digest, or asking for clarity, write it off as "programmer speak".

you have to be ready and willing to actively be involved in your own learning and sometimes that includes teaching others how to help you
