Just want to start this off with the fact that I have used BitDefender Total Security software for about 5 years now. I have 5 different PC's with it installed (one of them is my mother in laws PC, sheesh what a relief that was). I have recommended it to my friends and family. And I am about ready to CANCEL my subscription. I am so sick of these software companies telling me what I can and cannot do on MY PC. All of them spying on me and selling my information to the highest bidder. Makes my teeth grind I tell you.

Anyways, make yourself comfortable gents as this will take a few minutes. Go get a beer or whatever.

So on Thursday night I receive a DB push from BitDefender and a notification to Restart my PC for it to take effect. OK np at all. So the next day I go to start my newly minted 6 man group from ISBoxer and that's when things go all sideways on me. BitDefender goes all apeshit on me and everything grinds to a halt. It said it had found a threat and was quarantining it. I am like WTH? so I start digging into it and found it had :

Quarantined a file named fdlWCQt3.exe in my MQ2 folder for being a "spawned process" and
Blocked testrunner.exe, k2g3q23v.exe, MacroQuest.exe, crashpad_handeler.exe from my MQ2 folder and
eqgame.exe from my EQ folder and
conhost.exe from my \windows\system32 folder AND
subsequently DELETED eqgame.exe

Man was I pissed. All I could say was "WHAT!" "WHY!" and a bunch of swear words that I can't write here, well I could but you don't need to hear them.

So I finally calmed down after the wife came in and gave me that "look", you know what I mean. Went out to the back porch and had a smoke, came back and started trouble shooting.

Started with fdlWCQt3.exe, what the hell is that? Well I found references to it from, oh I don't know, 50 other programs that use it. I am sure you programmer types are going "Yep I know what that is". Then I tried to start the programs separately. Well Innerspace and also ISBoxer wouldn't even run. That's when I noticed my desktop icon for Redguides Launcher was missing too. Man it was just getting worse by the minute. Then I tried EQ standalone and it just said "file missing". Started pulling my hair out at that point. So after calming down again, I started to do some research. So if you start EQ normally it goes through a file verification process that you never see. Click on the "Advance Tools" button at the bottom of the Launcher window and it shows you the "Updated File List". Well mine showed where it was trying to write "eqgame.exe" but was erroring out because it couldn't communicate with the server. So more reading and I found where i could DL a new eqgame.exe file and copied it over. Tried it again and it made it to the Launcher and clicked "Play" and....shit, another error, talking about how EQ can't complete a connection.

Ok so let's put that aside for a moment, I started working on MQ. Well luckily some people here have run into problems like this before. SO I took their advice and did a install over the old files. Bingo, Redguides launcher brings up a window talking about "Repair current installation?" Oh you betcha, thanks guys for your foresight (credits to the developers). Wham fixed MQ, phew.

Try to run Innerspace and get an error about "can't get authorization" from the Lavishsoft server. "WHAT"? So more reading. Basically re install. Ok I can do that. Re install software and wham Innerspace runs again...ISBoxer? Yep it runs again...good, good...oh shit where is all my characters and my windows setup and my group setup...more missing hair AND another smoke. For those you who ask "What the hell is Innerspace and ISBoxer"? They are Multiboxing software from a company called Lavishsoft. Run by a guy who basically started this multiboxing idea, 20 some years ago. Anyways, ISBoxer can be rather daunting to setup. A ton of detail to be inputted and a rather elaborate setup for key bindings and such. Anyways I don't use it for the real tricky things it can do, but it's window management for displaying ALL your characters at once is unsurpassed. I use 2 monitors, one has my primary (whole screen for EQ) and the other shows 5 separate windows with the other 5 characters on it. With ISBoxer you can seamlessly switch which character is on the Primary with key bindings. It does some other pretty cool things that I won't get into it here. But it takes a lot of time to set everything up on it. A lot of time. All my shit was gone and now I have to start over. So I just redo one character to see if things will run again. Yep it works. Cool

And now for the finale guys. Still awake? Here is the reason why I am probably going to cancel my BitDefender account. So I come back to EQ and the comm errors. WTH is up with that? You programmer guys are probably laughing your ass off at me by now. After more reading and thinking about it I come up with the hare brained idea that "hey it sounds like it is being blocked"...now whatever could be doing the blocking? Duh could it be my FIREWALL? Sheesh talk about feeling like a dumbass. Anyways I had made some exeptions for EQ and MQ during my troubleshooting and I deleted those. No help. Turned off BitDefender. Anybody else have BitDefender? You would think that protection software that costs $89 a year would have a "Disable Bitdefender" button, right? Nope you have to go through each damn separate function that it has and disable them one at a time. OMG what a pain in the ass. Anyways disable, re start PC and now for the big test. Yes, EQ runs all the way through login and char selection. Yehaa.

I wrote this to vent to people who I think will understand and commiserate with me, and to give a heads up to the MQ developers. I think BitDefender is getting overly paranoid. I hope this will help someone else who may run across the same problem. The fact that fdlWCQt3.exe caused Bitdefender to trigger like that is absurd. It is used in countless other programs from what I read. My EQ setup ran just fine before last Friday so why now?

So I am looking for some new Anti virus/threat software. Any suggestions from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Kinda leaning towards Norton 360.

You didn't mention which flavor of Windows you're running, but if it's 10 or 11 then you don't need a 3rd party AV suite. Windows Defender is fine all by itself so long as you ALSO run a good Ad Blocker like uBlock Origin.

Most zero-day malware now gets delivered by malicious advertisements on websites. Blocking ads is just as important as having a good AV program.

Whatever you run make sure you add folder exclusions for Everquest and MQNext.

BigDaddy

I run Windows 10 and have uBlock Origin installed on FireFox. So I am good there. Man I have to say though that I have this thing about Microsoft as in, I can't stand them as a company and have a hard time trusting anything they put out. I will do some reading about Win Defender though.

I never had to add exceptions/exclusions for either, before last Friday, but I will now. Thanks for the tips

I worked as an End Use Compute engineer (automation of desktop configuration and deployment at scale - 5k to 20k fleets) for about 15 years.
Microsoft Defender is absolutely fine for 95% of use cases, including corporate.
It used to get a bad rap 10+ years ago because it was, well, rubbish. But since Ballmer left, the company has really got it's shit together with regards to AV etc.
Also recommend uBlock Origin for content filtering as per Vrakenor above.

Thanks for the input. I will look into it more. And sorry for the Microsoft mini rant, wasn't meant to insult anyone. I hate to say it but I have been using Microsoft products for the better part of 30 years now. I know them (not an expert by any means) but I hate the corporation. (shrug)

Np, I'm not emotionally invested in micro$oft.
It just ended up being the thing that paid for my house, and so I'm very familiar with the tech.

In my experience, you shouldn't need anti virus. Anti virus is for the old people that think links and random e-mails are "neat" and click on everything thinking the world is a safe place. Anyway, what I do is surf in sandbox software in a linux disto when I need to research, and find things that require a google search. And just use my main stream programs direct in windows that I know are safe while running everything else on a separate linux box. I do an image backup of my PC once a week to an internal drive in case I need to re-image my main drive in the event I have a hardware malfunction, or I need to experiment with changing my software / hardware configuration and am unsure if it will play out fine.

BUT with all that said, if you are sure you need anti virus, because ya know, big booty pics from all the insta links are too hard to ignore from all the 20 somethings showing the goods.... Then microsoft defender works alright. Just try not to go bat shit crazy and click on all those pervy e-mails. Web history is a bitch.

My 2 cents. :D :dance: :f5::woop:

Doc James

I got Bitdefender when I started to support my mother in law's PC. She had this nasty habit of clicking on ads. It about drove me crazy. Learning about Teamviewer was a godsend. Teaching her NOT to click on ads was painful. So I installed Bitdefender and uOrigin on her PC and got a great deal on it for the 5 PC package so I just put it on all our PC's and the wife's phone. Like I said it worked great for 5 years, so it became a habit. Until now. I cannot get over how intrusive it has become. Lol Doc, I am 67 years old, I don't really need any porn. I have always been against it because I think it is so degrading. So no I don't have that particular problem. But thanks for all the input, appreciate it.

I wrote this mostly to vent, and to partially to give people a heads up on this subject. It is just my style to try to inject a bit of sarcastic humor into it. I, too, get some satisfaction from reading of other peoples woes, I always think to myself, "been there, done that one". Thanks for the reminder, makes it a little easier to bear hehe.

Redfrog

I did some reading over the weekend and have decided to try out Win Defender. I have to uninstall BitDefender totally before WD becomes available, because BD is sooo intrusive, it doesn't allow you to switch without an uninstall (just another reason to cancel). It's just that I have to do this to 5 devices, sheesh. I haven't checked out Brave yet, although I have done a little reading about it, sounds promising. I have been using Firefox for years though, so it's going to be a tough habit to break. Thanks for the input.

Just a little update:
I got BitDefender uninstalled on my PC (thanks heavens) and got Win Defender setup. And although I have never had to exclude EQ or MQ in the past I went ahead and did that for now. Got all my other problems fixed (ISBoxer, Redguides launcher, and EQ) and continued the lengthy process of setting up my group. I decided I had way more healing than I needed so I created a Mage to fit into the group in place of the Shaman. So now my group consists of WAR, CLR, ENC, MAG, DRU, RNG. And I am seriously thinking about replacing the RNG with a Bard. I haven't made up my mind yet lol. They are still lvl 5 yet so there is time.

I buy a 10-user version of Norton 360 Premium for all my click-happy relatives. Picked up the last copy just a month ago during Amazon Days. $27 for 10 users for 1 year subscription.

I know a lot of people hate Norton but it's been golden for years for me and my relatives.

B_I_G__D_A_D_D_Y

I was reading about Norton 360 before I wrote this OP. It was second on 3 different comparisons to BitDefender, and not by much. Can you tell me if Nortons is as intrusive as BitDefender has turned out be? And $26 for a year? Sheesh that's a great price. BitDefender is $89 a year for 5 devices.

Vrakenor,

BitDefender owner here for the past 15 years. When i first started with VV or even testing out Open Vanilla, BitDefender went total bat shit. It even quarantined eqgame.exe because of the VV injection. I set a few exclusions in the advance threat tab and all has been well since. I feel for you because at first it hits you out of left field.

Be well. Happy gaming.

Gekko

Thanks for the commiseration. But I ran EQ and MQ2 in 2019 with Bitdefender and it never once made me give them an exclusion. It just makes me scratch my head. Works for some or even sometimes. Like I said in my OP, I had already been running everything for a week before disaster struck. [shakes head] And you Be Well my friend.

I am going through the same thing atm with BitDefender
I have uninstalled BD and reinstalled Redguides launcher and still the launcher wont load Argghh

I just had this happen also with the latest patch. Well, I've had it happen on 4 or 5 other patches, consistently with 1 of my accounts (I run 4 accounts in different EQ folders). Symptoms:

Bitdefender quarantines the MQ randomly named exe file.
SOMETHING deletes eqgame.exe.
The MQ launcher is no longer installed.

Before this time, I was lazy and just said WTH /shrug and copied a "good" toon's folder over a NEW folder for the "bad" toon, after saving the "bad" toons UI files and copying them back. Just copying over the old folder will not work, and will cause the connection error in EQ.

This time, I had a few hours I was willing to invest. Turns out it is Bitdefender's "Advanced Threat Defense". Turn that completly off. It allows you to white list a named executable file... but not a folder. Thus MQ's rando file names for the exe will trigger it.

This has happened to me three times now.

The trick to avoid this happening is to not run MQ until AFTER you have patched EQ. If MQ is already loaded when you patch and launch the game, BitDefender sees MQ interacting with the new eqgame.exe file and thinks there is "virus-like" behavior. It will quarantine eqgame.exe, that file you mentioned and maybe one more.

After this happened to me I tried adding AV exception rules to make it work, but gave up in annoyance. Instead, I just uninstalled and reinstalled Bitdefender.

Now that I know what triggers the problem, I'm just careful to not use MQ until the game is patched first.

I may also suggest duckduckgo for a search engine -- protects your search queries better than Google, anyway. So, there's less intrusion.

To you guys that have just posted about this:

I feel your pain, I really do. Again, one of those "been there, done that" type of thing. I don't know if you got a chance to read this whole post or not, but there are some really good suggestions in it. My biggest take away from this debacle that is Bit Defender, is that Windows Defender is actually pretty good. For 3 reasons. One is simplicity, very easy to setup and use. That in itself, is quite a recommendation. Secondly, it is easy to maintain, and they don't seem to make drastic changes to it like Bit Defenders did. Thirdly, it's free with Windows, not too shabby. I have been using it for over a year now and no problems with either the program itself or with malware/viruses. My mom in law still likes to click on shit every now and then though (rolls eyes). I am happy with it, so I don't mind recommending it.

When I was in the biz, back in my day, lol. We used to walk to work up hill, both ways, in a snowstorm. (Sorry couldn't resist) I would read comparisons and release info from magazines at first then increasingly from the internet. Nowadays I hardly read any of that stuff, unless some relative calls me up and wants to know about this or that, then I go into "research mode", and I keep it to a minimum. I am retired after all lol.

So back on subject here, I recommend scrapping Bit Defender totally, as others have pointed out, it's not really needed anymore. And will save you some scratch too. You know, so you can save up to buy your next Asus MB hehe. Shessh another debacle. Also Amarth (above) has a pretty good suggestion about switching to Duckduckgo for your search engine. Works great and I like not supporting that behemoth, piece of crap, that likes to tell me what I can say or talk or think. Bah! Been to a Marvel movie lately?

Anyways good luck on solving your problems.
