I've played a fair bit of EQ, but I haven't used MQ. I was thinking it'd be fun to use MQ to control a whole raid, but what would it take to do that? Is there a free server that would allow that (because I'm not paying that many subscription fees)? How many clients could I run on one computer? How many accounts would I need if I wanted to progress by myself expansion by expansion after planes of power (which is the last expansion I'm familiar with) or some later starting point that reduces the requirements?

Lots of variables can be in your question to answer it all. Redguides sub gives you all the tools to group or raid, it also has some paid tools that are options. The computer(s) you have or want to have will determine how many characters you can play at once. EQ can run many clients on really old computers, but there are so many options to have on or off, it will use more or less memory.
Your choice of Live, Test or EMU will help you determine the price. Test and EMU are free, Live is Free accounts on normal servers.
I would suggest seeing the videos on the home page to see what you can do in a group and raid.
Best of luck, hope you sub and join us for fun.

Note that some classes can be effective without an ongoing sub, although you will need to pop one krono or pay for a month to get them AAs once they're leveled up. Generally, this is dps - your tanks need subs so they can use better gear. (If you're way below current content, then your tanks can be over leveled for the content you're currently doing and won't need current gear, and then they can run f2p too.) If you play on FV, you can buy gear in the bazaar.

Just play on Test server. All accounts are like sub accounts on Test. Costs you nothing with all the benefits.

It is fun for the right mind set to raid with MQ. It can be hugely frustrating to keep track of everything from start to finish. But, with practice it gets better. You also should find the right tools to augment your MQ experience for raiding.

Start with using MQ with a single toon to get your feet wet. Then add another or a full group. Play around with some of the tools and options here. Find what makes sense to your play style. As you progress with managing a group, you will start to see how various tools could be used in a raid setting.

As mentioned above, your hardware will determine how many clients can be ran on a single PC. So, mileage will vary depending on CPU cores and memory. You'll want to turn a lot of stuff off to smooth out the resource requirements. Definitely turn off the new UI.

Play around and have fun. Plenty of stuff on the forums here for almost any question you may think of while you're learning :)

Welcome to never playing EQ again without MQ, lol 🍻

Option for Classic Content

You could try "ProjectEQ (PEQ) The Grand Creation". This is the reference server for all EMUs, hosted by the EMU developers as far as i got this right.

Content is implemented up until DoN (lvl 70 cap). Lots of folks raid boxing there. Server is boxfriendly.

Keep in mind, that they only allow stock builds of mq2 with E3 macro for automation. Certain features are disabled in this build or discouraged (like far taunting, targeting mobs more thsn 200 units away, autopulling). I do not know their stance on RG Very Vanilla (Emu).

Option for current content

You could try the Testserver. Gear is basically free there. The tradable ToL chase loot is on par with CoV Raid T1 and usually handed to you for free on test. This can give you a headstart in getting your raidforce rolling.

Emu server Convergence is really geared for raids. Afk play aloud. All forms of mq also ok. Most use Modbot to controI thier armies. I couldn't go past 32 toons with my current computer. The people on Convergence are very helpful. Check them out on Discord. Even if you want to play on live, EMU can/will help you learn without being noticed. Armies running threw POK are very noticable. Very easy way of getting banned. Happy Hunting!
