edit: 12/17/2019 - The updater is deprecated. Please use the launcher:

---------------------
This is a discussion for the Very Vanilla installer and updater (update.exe). Please report issues with this software here.

The current version is 1.1

Download it for Live, Test and Emu servers. They play well together.

Troubleshooting

  • update.exe doesn't open. No errors pop up, no windows pop up, nothing.
Delete the "cookie" file (usually found in your release folder). You may need to reboot in order to delete it.

  • The following feature couldn't be installed: .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)
You'll have to turn windows update on to get .NET Framework 3.5.

  • "Cannot access "C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Temp\w2697\Meshgenera tor.exe" access denied." or "Access to the path is denied."
Disable your antivirus, and make sure you run update.exe as admin.

  • "Error trying to save file: Error downloading "https://www.redguides.com/update/live/?update=veryvanilla.20160925.to.20161012.wyu&pkey=": The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request."
Make sure you're running Update.exe, not wyUpdate.exe. If the problem persists, delete the "cookie" file (usually found in your release folder). You may need to reboot in order to delete it.

For old/advanced users:

The RedGuides Very Vanilla updater can be used with all existing MQ2 folders, even from other sites. Simply extract the "olduser_xxx.zip" file below to your MQ2 root folder. It won't overwrite your .ini files, don't worry.

Since I've seen it happen second hand, and have seen it happen already once to one member of the forums....it should probably be mentioned that, just like the old rgupdater, you must close MQ2 (and anything else like EQBCS) before you try to update! This includes unloading MQ2 from Everquest, or just closing the game.

Sometimes people forget these small steps!

WTF happened to my avatar?!

Razkle went on a redcent rampage :)

As far as closing MQ2 when updating, that's optional. You'll need to restart MQ2/EQBCS after updating though, so you might as well.

not working for me

Hey Guy,

I'm not sure what's wrong but we'll figure it out.

What version of Windows are you running?
How much space do you have free on C:\?
Do you have .net framework? Check windows updates and let me know

It has been a few years since I have used Macroquest. I can't help but think I am doing something wrong. I play on Phinegal Progression Server. I used the Installer. I ran the updater after the install to ensure most current version is being used. I then load MQ2 then load EQ through the launcher and every single time I get ready to show the character select screen the game crashes. Am I doing something wrong here? Please help me figure this out!

  • Please note that MacroQuest does not work on Phinigel. Use MySEQ instead.

Phini and MQ2 are as oil and water as could possibly be imagined.

there are 2 alternative solutions to get you gaming:

1) play on Phini and forget about MQ2, there's a map program floating around that works but that's the limit. No MQ2, no KA, no anything to automate gameplay.

2) pick a different server and MQ2 should work just swimmingly.

the MQ2 community has agreed to support keeping MQ2 out of Phini and DGC has unofficially agreed to turn a blind eye on the other servers.

Works great! I used it on all 3 of my computers after yesterdays patch.

Very great work.
Thou i would like an option to get a heck for new updates at a dily basis, because i run mq 24/7, i need it to have started before i load eq, if not mq2melee stick command wont work as intended.
What i would like is that goes for a check on updates every time based interval, and tells if update are avaiable.

Updates here are a little more complicated. Most times you need to update your EQ and THEN your MQ2, and trust me, if it is out if sync it will simply tell you it is out of sync. Basically when they change the structure of the launcher then you have to run that to update the base EQ files. The MQ2 files need to be UNLOADED from memory, then MQ2 will patch the appropriate EQ files and you can then start it back up. There is no live updating option. Just this fine add on that will simplify the patching part of the equation.

I can't get updater to run. I just came back after leaving EQ for a couple years, MQ2 installer ran fine. When I try to run updater I get the pop up asking for my username and password but when I click update I get a message saying the application wyUpdate was unable to start correctly. I tried loading MQ2 just to see what would happen, and I'd get the spinning circle of thinking for a few seconds, then nothing. No icon in taskbar, no program in task manager.Dunno if the two are related or not, but I'm stumped. I've even googled wyUpdate, but nothing I could find there helped either.

  • What's the exact error message?
  • What OS are you running?
  • 64 bit or 32 bit?
  • Do you have .net framework 2 installed?
  • Do you have an overactive antivirus program running?

If you're frustrated and want to use MQ2 right now, you can always download the newest compile from our release threads. Otherwise I'll stick with you until we get it working!

Thanks Redbot. THe exact error mssg is wyUpdate.exe - Application Error. The application was unable to start correctly (0xc00000e5). Click OK to close the application. Not much help there, I know :) I'm running Win10 64 bit, and as far as I could tell I do have .net 2 installed. Just tried disabling antivirus and poof, everything is good now, so that was the problem. Thanks a bunch Redbot :D

got a problem with this not running any more.

windows 10, am sure it worked ok 2 updates ago, but didn't work on last update/patch and today I tried uninstalling it, downloading fresh from here and installed again.
but again the updater just doesn't run. any ideas? works ok on comp upstairs

You click update.exe and nothing pops up, right?

Make sure you disable/uninstall antivirus software. Another thing that can help is find the "cookie" file in your Release folder (if it exists) and delete it.

renamed the mq2 folder uninstalled and re-installed and it worked this time. but gona be a pain if I have to rename mq2 folder every patch.

any idea what file name the "cookie" file would have?

am also assuming need an update/new compile after last patch?

If you can't run the updater, you won't be able to make the cookie so don't worry about it. It's just called "cookie" no extension.

Also make sure the updater isn't running in the background when you try to run it a second time. CTRL-ALT-Delete and go to task-manager, look for it in apps and background processes.

Would it be possible to have an option for skipping the UI files, or at least let the app remember the folder?

Updated test installer ever-so-slightly, I changed the default macroquest.ini:

from
Rich (BB code):
MacroQuestWinClassName=__MacroQuestTray
to
Rich (BB code):
MacroQuestWinClassName=__MacroQuestTrayTest

This will allow you to run both Test and Live compiles at the same time. No need to re-install, go ahead and make the change above and you can run both as well.

Hrm, why would you want this feature? Anyone else want this?

The updater is not working for me. At first it gave an error along the lines: Cannot access "C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Temp\w2697\Meshgenerator.exe" access denied.
Now after I reinstalled the updater it gives the error: "Access to the path is denied."

The updater was run as admin.

Can you check your C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Temp\w2697 folder and delete "Meshgenerator.exe"?

also make sure that you aren't dealing with an overactive antivirus program.

my AV tried to have a hissy fit over meshgenerator.

When I check the C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Temp\w2697\Meshgenerator.exe it is empty.

Update: turning AV off worked. I installed a different one between this update and the last so didn't know it was a problem until now. Thanks

I can't get update.exe to open, double clicking it does nothing. No errors pop up, no windows pop up, nothing. Program doesn't show up in the task manager.

Windows 10 64bit.

wyUpdate works but there's no authentication in that program so MQ fails to update.

In your MQ2 folder delete "cookie" and let me know if that worked.

Trying to install, and the installer keeps trying to get .Net framework 3.5, I already have the latest version 4.6, So its stuck at

The following feature couldn't be installed:

.NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)

Windows couldn't find required files to complete the requested changes.

Error code: 0x800F081F

I'm running Win10 64bit.

EDIT: Figured out the issue, the error code was due to having turned off windows update service. Turning it back on fixed the issue.
