Discussion - This guy played EQ for 100 hours as a new player and he is spot on

I enjoyed this. Cant believe I actually sat here and listened to the entire video. It was quite entertaining, and Yes... He is Spot On!

I remember seeing this a while ago, guy that made it seems to play and review a lot of MMOs.

I respected his take, it is funny how after playing this game for so long, it was hard to relate to some of the difficulties he was having.

I couldn't imagine sticking with EQ nowadays, especially on a live server, if I was starting from scratch and modern content 100+ is where I'd have to build my foundation

I have yet to get above 80 on any toon currently, I rarely see anyone out in the world and in the off chance I do its another boxer in travel. I hit a wall each time around the 70-80 range get bored start another box team and go again. But at the same time I can almost be gauranteed if I want to kill a specific mob, its there and available with no camping required.

I know this is off topic, but 70-80 is probably the modern hell level range (defiant falls off dramatically and content greatly ramps up difficulty), with 105-115 (mainly for tanks) being the next as "most" guides skip big portions of content within these ranges.

I seem to get to the end of HoT and get bored and build a new team. Idk why but it happens consistently.

@Cybris dude is right...but did anyone just want to train a whole zone on him or just me?

His narrative and voice makes me want to hammer my own toe

I didn't mind the Video. Watched it quite a long time ago.

He does have some points, but also, he didn't actively look to join a guild..... That tends to help with having people to talk to and progressing.

This is valid. Before I up and moved to Test, there were multiple guilds on the Rathe actively recruiting in general.

I believe he is dead on from a new person's perspective. There are newer MMOs with better graphics, but none with the history or loyal following of EQ.

Basically it takes too long to get to end game.

It’s a game built around group dependency but there are no players in lower mid levels to group with everyone is at endgame. So in order to progress you have to resort to boxing. (He didn't go into how or what to use to box).

Steep learning curve to understand how to play your class well or the game in general. Which other players told him is why he needs to play his class from level 1 to max so he can learn it. But it’s just too much of a time sink when you have limited play time.

Eq was also about having the social aspect in game but now that has fallen away and people use outside of game tools for socialization like Discord.

Newer MMO’s have systems to compensate for these shortcomings. Faster path to new content, you can group with other people no matter level.

The game itself was an enjoyable experience but due to the short comings its not new player friendly.

The play from level 1 shit I have never ever ever agreed with.

It often seems to come from some asshole who has played his class 20 years and doesn't know wtf he is doing.

I agree with playing from level 1 up to learn a class is nonsense. The gameplay and mechanics change super drastically 100+. The game is split into two era - Sony Online Entertainment (Legacy) and Daybreak/Darkpaw (Modern). Modern EQ would be 100+ from The Broken Mirror on up. Daybreak reshaped the game completely. You have to learn how to play "THAT" game and anything you learned from 1-100 is part of the legacy system and isn't all that needed. To be fair it can help you to learn some of the legacy features and how certain mechanics work, but this can also be learned by going back and working achievements as a higher level toon.

I ran thru the Heroes Journey once and nearly completed it. A couple of achievements short. And I am glad I did it the one time, but heck no will I ever do it again. Just like some of the other things like Hunter achievements or all the other expansion related achievements. One and done and I could care less if my boxes get any achievements.

@reedbstandin i somewhat disagree with this statement...i'd characterized it as...the shitty game DBG has been building rests on the awesome game that Sony and Verant initially built...

I much more enjoy 0-75-80ish gameplay than all the latest "high-end" shit people get stuck on....

I mean come on...who doesn't wander into sebilis as a 50 something whatever (without a group) or lguk...and go oh-shit...i better watch my ass..

I respect that. And I think that was one of the messages in the video. I was trying to critique the commentary to say that the current end game is a totally different game. If the current end game didn't exist in its form I would probably get used to the Legacy systems and be fine with those. But now that I've been playing current end game I am too used to the mechanics, spells, and AAs - I find it super hard (mentally) to go back and play 1-100. This also comes from someone that skipped from like 65 to 85 heroic and then skipped 85 to 100 heroic. So I didn't really play straight 1-100 so I guess maybe that is why I can't stand the grind.
