First: I’ve never seen this before but when I hit update I get the following message:

“It looks like a running copy of Everquest has some files locked.
Please unload MQ2 from running Everquest clients by issuing an /unload

  • emu: Fix ti command in each client
  • emu: Fix t and restart the update process.
  • emu: Fix c
If the problem persists, please close all active Everquest clients and try the
  • emu: Fix c update again.
So I did all that and it still will not update and keeps popping up with the same message.

Any suggestions?

If you don't have any everquest instances running. I would reboot your computer and try again.

restart your computer
check antivirus / windows defender for any locked files

run updater again

Solution
This can happen if MQ is still running. You can exit MQ from the system tray or, as Cannonballdex said, just reboot.

This happened to me even when I /unloaded on everyone and exited Macroquest, and ensured it wasn't running in the task manager anywhere. I had to close (/camp desktop) my EQ instances as well to get it to fully unlock. I don't know exactly what was being held onto, unless there's a misfit .dll running or me changing my EQ window names (using /SetWinTitle in my config files) had anything to do with it. Doubtful, but who knows. I've seen stranger things, like the Cowboys winning last night.

I have this problem about 75% of the time. Whenever it happens I turn off my antivirus while I down load and I don't seem to have any issues.

definitely worth considering whitelisting your AV/defender for EQ, MQ, and RG folders/directories
