Hey everyone,

I'm a long-time EQ vet that actually started playing in '99 (got the game the day before servers went up, had to redo the offline tutorial over and over again lol) and played pretty solid until LDoN before giving the game a break for about 12 years. Picked it up for a few months on Ragefire in 2016 (Kunark era) and now recently discovered Project Lazarus, which I intend to explore with a full party.

I learned about MQ by watching Ion Blaze's video about the 4 ways of "ch3ating" in EQ, and I'm posting here after watching Doc Legendary's video from about a year ago. Back on Ragefire, I ran a 6-box party using IsBoxer, which was a real PAIN to configure and still required a lot of effort to manage. When Doc Legendary said using MQ is like turning Everquest into a real-time strategy game, he caught my attention. I like the idea of fiddling with the various class configs until they are doing exactly what I want without me having to press any buttons (kinda like the gambit system in FF XII).

I'd like to know if anyone has any specific information to share, related or not to the Project Lazarus server, and how I can go about paying for a level 2 sub. I want to support this site and the Lazarus server (already know how to donate to them via paypal). I am sitting on a dozen krono or so on live servers, and I read that it is possible to pay with those so any help with that would be appreciated as well!

Oh and just to show how excited I am about playing with this new "toy", my gf and I are going on vacation for 10 days in a few hours, and I'm bringing a gaming laptop so I can play this in our hotel room after she goes to bed every night ;) (I say laptop, but my bag is big enough for a full size gaming keyboard and mouse too!)

Anyway looking forward to reading through all the information and guides that are here and get started leveling my crew. Thanks in advance for any tips, tricks or information you guys can share, it's greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Wow, that's amazing! Thanks a bunch EQ74, if I can pay it forward at some point I will gladly do it :)

And I'm officially logged in from the hotel room, confirming what I've know these past 24 years: I'm an addict and Everquest is awesome :P

Cheers again mate!

Holy cow that's a lot of information, much more than I could've hoped for.

And thanks to EQ74's donation, looks like I have enough redcents to get a month of level 2, but I think I'd rather use my krono to buy a year ahead of time and just give out the redcents. I have a feeling that once I start playing around with MQ, I won't ever wanna play on a TLP server again.

No worries about the vacation, I think I'll just use the free time I have here to catch up on all these video guides and links you've provided.

Thanks a bunch, I really appreciate you guys taking the time to help!

You should now have 3 months of level 2 access. Ha beat ya to this one Rob !!
Wow, you guys are amazing. Just like that I'm level 2 for 4 months! I would be happy to send a krono your way or some plat if you happen to play on Oakwynd (I have 5-6 million) as thanks. I would've gladly used them to pay for the membership anyway.

I'm trying to find the forum rules (a search for "rules" yields tons of results about TLP servers, or a bunch of raffles and contests) so I can find out if offering / trading krono or plat is accepted / frowned upon.

Anyway thanks a bunch for the 3 months Kilroy! Now I really can enjoy my vacation lol

There are no rules about offering or trading Krono or plat in game. Mostly its Krono that is traded and the price varies depending on server. If your talking about in game.

No rules I have seen here about offering or trading either. Although I usually see a "tip the dev" post come up every now and again to remind us that these guys put a lot of time and effort into making these programs but we can donate to them anytime.

Not many contests or raffles. Stay away from the players running their own Casinos in the game. They are a rip off.

As you have seen Red Cents are the currency here. As long as your level 2 you can give them out and that earns you more. If your not level 2 then you cannot give them out. But others can still give them to you. It takes 50 red cents for a month of level 2. You can give friends a month or more free as happened with you. So when you find a post that is helpful then click the red $ sign and it will give that poster 10 Reds and you get some too. When others find your post helpful and red cent you then you get 10!!!

But.......Level 2 also gives you access to Very Vanilla MacroQuest2, Macros (including KissAssist, the macro for all classes) exclusive plugins, and a great community.

So I do have a couple of questions about some things which are probably basic knowledge but doesn't seem to be covered in the videos I watched (the Red Guide 5 videos, and the videos by Doc Legendary):
- How do you guys set up your 6 everquest boxes? Do you run them all from the same install folder? What happens with the client music & sound effects when there are 6 clients running simultaneously?
- I think I've read that some people turn down vfx, framerate and even use stick figures instead of character models in order to lower the impact of the boxes that are running in the background. Is this necessary for most people or just a problem with semi-dated hardware? (I'm running a laptop with i7-11800H and rtx 3070 and 16GB of ram, but once I get back home, my desktop has a 3080 and 32GB of ram)

When I used to play with IsBoxer, it was doing something called Virtual Files, which would allow it to run off a single install folder, but keep separate instances of the various ini files which allowed me to decide which of my accounts would have sound and which would not, etc. Does MQ do something similar?

I just want to make sure I am setting myself up for success and don't have to reinstall everything or go through all the setup process twice because I didn't do it right the first time.

And please, if there is a resource that already has all the answers, I'll be happy to head there and read/watch it myself if someone can point it out.

Cheers!

1 folder for driver toon and 1 folder for bots. leave whatever you want on on the driver folder, turn down all the settings, disable sound, models etc. on bots.
EMU has a lot of issues with running out of memory, doing everything you can to reduce that eliminates a lot of crashing, particularly in zones like POK, especially on a server like laz where they enable a ton of NPC models for pet illusions and other junk.

Common crashing issues

  • Most crashes are caused by the 32 bit process and out of memory errors. (the three below will resolve most crashing issues)
  • Use 4gb patch on the RoF2 client exe (eqgame.exe) (https://ntcore.com/?page_id=371) run it and point it at eqgame.exe
  • Use old models
  • if on lazarus here is a more trimmed down global load that retains MOST of the models NewGlobalLoads_2023-09-25.zip
  • if not or you want as bare bones as you can get. Make a backup of the existing GlobalLoad.txt in your EQ\Resources directory and replace with this one GlobalLoad.txt (this will disable a lot of models, get used to seeing human male warriors running around, if that's important to you, do this last)
  • If using frame limiter (highly recommended), disable particle effects on background characters.
  • Frame limiter settings - Want background frame limiting enabled, low Target FPS, and want minimum simulation rate under advanced option at least 30 FPS

Drake,
I'm wondering why you want to go to project 99 where you'll be saving copper to buy bandages if it's anything like 1999. Sure we remember it fondly because of the comraderie but the game itself was hard as hell. I've already walked uphill barefoot in the snow both ways to school. Never again thank you. If you ever go no no drop you will never go back. I'm on Firiona Vie which has the best ruleset of any server an XP bonus always. The best economy of any server and the best people. Read the thread Helping On FV.

I'm here to help if you change your mind.

If you're looking for a classic experience, I recommend Aegis of Norrath Emu. It's at Velious expansion and will eventually end at PoP. You can box up to 18 toon. Mq is allowed, afk allowed, instances of zones are avaialble. Warping and and active cheats are the only things prohibited.

Hey RobRenfro,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I didn't say I wanted to start on project 99 :) I know what that server is and I've read up on it. They actually don't allow multiboxing of any kind, or MQ in any way so this falls outside of my current interests.

What I'm looking for is information on setting up MQ and Project Lazarus (which I've already gotten tons of advice on, thanks to everyone here). I'll post my future queries in the Emulator forums.

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion Devil! Right now I am starting on Project Lazarus but if I feel like I want to manage 12 or even 18 toons by myself, I will definitely give Aegis a go!

Cheers

anyone else have any expiration with aegis of norrath emu. the up to 18 toons with no raid exp loss sounds fun

I currently use ISboxer/innerspace and have about 15 toons running from the same EQ folder with no issues at all. I'd never play EQ without 6 boxing and using ISboxer / innerspace!
