Did you update EQ via the launcher as well after the patch today?

The snip they posted shows they patched EQ but not MacroQuest. And has now patched MacroQuest and is good to go.

Check the plug-in tab of the launcher because you did not download the most recent MQ2 cleric it is trying to load the old file which obviously would not function

if your plugin license expired you will have to renew it to download the latest verstion, but you can see here that you didn't download cleric

Yes, the launcher does not have a method of deleting out dated files at this time, so you will either delete the files, or change your MacroQuest.ini to MQ2Cleric=0

the new launcher will have things like that - but no, this launcher does not do anything like that

Launcher has given me problems for over a year now. It can take 20-30 tries before it finally loads everything. Recently (like maybe the last month or so) the plugins, macros and luas have all vastly improved and now it doesn't seem to take more than a few tries before they all load. However, the update of the launcher itself seems to just not be happening anymore.

Screenshot of the plugins being successfully updated individually are included as is a screenshot of the errors the launcher update spits out.

Again, it's only the launcher update that's an issue.

This is usually due to antivirus or some other form of file syncing or file scanning.

Is often recommended to whitelist your RG MQ and EQ folders for that reason

I understand usually that's the issue, but unlikely in this case. The MQ2 folder is listed in exclusions (Windows Defender) and everything else has been updating; EQ itself, plugins, etc. It's *just* the launcher update that won't happen.

Your system clock set to the right time? For the json object to wind up empty that means it failed its connection to the website to download the object. So something is blocking that specific connection. It possible you're blocking older versions of SSL or something? Might also try setting up a different browser for your default browser, login to redguides through the new browser. Then run it again? Could be settings in your browser blocking certain TLS/SSL versions/encryption schemes.

As far as I know off the top of my head the only two plugins that reach out to the internet are MQ2Discord and MQ2MeshManager and we both use the curl library instead of the Windows default browser. Lua uses it's own http package, and the Launcher uses the Wix library which uses .NET and the Windows Default browser to do it. So yeah. They're all using different functionality. Wix uses some stuff targeted for .NET 3.5 so it probably has issues with TLS 1.1/TLS 1.2+ requirements if they've been turned on (They're not on by default).

check compat layers to ensure windows didn't block it

Need to check if windows added something to your compat layer? Check these locations in your registry for anything eq/mq related and delete. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

you checked defender, because that is built-in

so multiple browsers, no compat layer issues, no blocking of any kind?

Yeah this is very strange I had 6 traders logged in and i logged all off and tried to restart MQ bc it had been a few days and RG launcher would not open

Question: Why does the Desktop icon prompt to "run as admin?" call out testrunner.exe but when the icon in the startup menu is launched, the "run as admin?" prompt calls out "RGResourceManager"?

Everything worked last night when I logged off. Nothing was added or even used till this happened. Thanks for any advice. Not sure if its related to the post below me or not. I would start with the basics.

rebooting
ensuring it isn't being held up by antivirus

I tried all that, had to learn Compat layers and registry stuff, made me work outside my normal parameters, nothing has worked yet. I will give it a few more tries and just assume it's the EQ gods telling me it's time for my hiatus that I seem to take every few years. This was a longer run and You all made it much more enjoyable this round. Thanks for the good times

I checked both those registry entries and the first doesn't exist and the second has a value not set. All MQ/RedGuides folders that I know about are set as exclusions under anti-virus.
Everything else loads (usually first try but almost always by the 3rd) - plugins, macros and Lua. But the launcher update rarely works. I frequently run on versions 1 or 2 rev's old until, eventually, it updates (but that can be 30+ attempts).
I get the 'null bytes' error all the time. Until it finally decides to update in a few days or a week.

Launcher just started giving me a problem after a power outage shut down my computer. When I click on RedGuides Launcher I get a quick black box then nothing. In the past I got the quick black box then the Launcher would pop. I looked for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers. There were a couple of entries in the first file which I deleted and none in the second. I restarted the computer and same result. I downloaded two different files to reinstall using two different browsers and tried using both to "repair" the launcher and both gave me the error of "The file 'LuaModule' cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in cabinet file 'program.cab'. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package."

Not sure what to try at this point. I am a bit afraid of deleting and reinstalling. Anyone have any ideas of what to check next. Thanks.

I deleted the launcher from my C: drive and reinstalled on my D: drive and once I set the launcher up it worked just fine. Thank you, I never would have tried that, I would have reinstalled on the same drive if I did a reinstall.

The Bug: While monkeying around, I clicked the "..." on the "MacroQuest directory", which naturally pops up a file browser. I selected "Cancel", and returned to the GUI -- BUT, the file path was now nulled out. I exited and reloaded the launcher, but the path is still missing. (path was populated with a filepath prior to me hitting the "...")


My confused state of being: I'm not sure what to manually input for this path, can someone tell me what path to use? I *assume* the path to the launcher install -- but that's just an assumption.

Just checking if anyone else is having this issue trying to update today? I did a search and couldn't find anything on issue when RG launcher tries to update but says EQ has some files locked? I don't have EQ up and I also rebooted with same issue. No EQ task running at all anywhere. What files is it talking about please or how to fix it. Hate to have to reinstall RG sorry. EQ comes up just fine. Thanks for your understanding

I think i get a similar message when I make a file read-only and it tries to update it..

its either that or you have your MQ instance still running (got to go into the taskbar and close that too)

yes and works on one system but not other which is even stranger. Worked few days ago even. working one is on Win 10 and other is Win 11

I Had the same message. Task Manager had six instances of EQClient sticking around 16 hours after my last /camp desktop. Closed those out and updated successfully.

Gotta kill your Macroquest application that's running (that is, not EQ, not VV, not the RedGuides launcher). Usually this can be done from the taskbar. If for whatever reason you're not able to do that, a reboot should take care of it.

Killed app, rebooted 2x times. No EQclient running via taskmaster either. Almost like a permissions issue. Tried all of that before I asked the question. Which is why i am puzzled. Thanks
