Claude doesn’t make you into a talented developer.

claude does not make you suddenly good at reverse engineering. And what happens when Anthropic decides to butcher the quality or jack up the prices out of reach like they’ve already started doing?
I mean really Claude's entire source was leaked via a NPM source map the other day. You could run it yourself and not worry about it changing at this point.

This is not true. A map file and some of the source code was mistakenly added to a release. It is embarrassing and many of Claude’s competitors will gain an insight into their secrets.

I use Claude 10 hours a day in 3 computers at a time with 3 separate projects going. Now I’ve been a software developer for 40 years and I’m pretty good at it so I agree that Claude alone is not enough to make you a talented developer, but it will increase your productivity by many orders of magnitude. I’m doing the work of 10 or more developers right now and making multiple customers happy with the speed and quality of my products. To just scoff at LLM for software development is myopic and silly. Software development is the single best thing it is good at. Hiring for entry level software engineers is a barren wasteland.

The new MQ team will certainly use some form of LLM and be better for it. Like anything you have to know how to drive it, but that’s the job skill now not coding

I would focus on just learning the code, iv used ai to learn how everything works just thought the ones stepping down could pass on the knowledge befor i get in to it

I'm at the point where I want DBG to implode, sometimes that's the only way a company will learn from their mistakes. I love EQlive but honestly I wouldn't be devastated if it all just went away for the sake of my addiction and finances.

I feel ya - I found out basically 36 hours before the announcement went out. Sucks.
I don't think red wants to make promises that he's not able to deliver on - cause RG is at the mercy of the success of the open source MacroQuest - something that RG helped the developers drive MQ into where it is now - open
I *personally* really dont like the abruptness, and I sincerely hope that miracles happen and live MQ continues - if it doesn't and RG isn't a banging thriving place my level of 24/7/365 involvement will absolutely have to be spent elsewhere. I won't have a choice.
I'm just a slow person but pool money ***mod edit: racist comment about exploiting cheap foreign labor***? maybe player base can support them to have full time dudes...
I've had to work all day for the last 4 days so i'm out of the loop of any updates but reading up.

Wait, isn't Frostreaver a TLP? I thought MQ doesn't work on TLP servers.
incorrect, MQ doesn't work on "TRUEBOX" servers, not non-truebox tlp servers

tho if no live/test that distinction is moot --- hopefully we'll see builds

So (as far as I understand) there are no EMU servers that offer up-to-date expansions, IE; up to SOR. But is there a reason as to why? I'd assume some legal / licensing issue, although I have no clue.

EDIT: Nevermind, just found my answer elsewhere.

I also think a lot of folks here are overestimating the amount of botters versus normal players EQ has, but I guess time will tell.

Either way, I'll always be a member here to support RG. Too good'a'community to take off.

should that not be "didint" support Truebox.... since the current team is no longer supporting live... it should be up to whomever picks up the torch....i would think.
no, macroquest as an open source project does not support truebox. and macroquest does not (and wont) contain truebox bypassing *even if someone decided to try and use mq on truebox servers*

but way to miss the extreme existential threat to how we all play this game

I think the distinction here is that MQ dev team isnt going away or changing. They are just not longer updating for live.

All the other stuff aside, I'd like to just thank everyone who's worked on MQ over the years. For me personally it turned a job that I sometimes enjoyed into something I did for fun. Since the banwaves, I've been hanging out on emu, first convergence (I suck at scripting), then thj... And now dipping my toes into EQMight.
Excited to see what improvements will be coming down the pipe for emu.

well i wont play anymore if no live and i know you say there are more real players than botters but how many botters are key players in real guilds

In my guild we normal have up to 2 groups of bot toons. and sometime its classes we need or we can't raid depending on who logs in that night.

man talk about a double (or maybe triple) kick in the nuts for me. I subscribed to redguides, downloaded, and started using Vanilla 10 days before banwave. banwave happens, 2 toons for 7 days. All mad for a week, went through all stages of grief during that 7 days, get my toons back, crazy march patch takes a while to patch, i learned how to build my own copy, been using it for 3 weeks, and now this, lol. Well SIC if you want to add my name to possible helpers, i could help with building, testing (document smoke tests), maybe grow into small fixes, but i'm not the reverse/debug person yet.

That's the entire point of having an MQ dev team. The test patch is tomorrow, fingers crossed this blows over and things don't change too much. I would be able to play with MQ2, but only if it's not in the hands of a few people who keep it on lockdown.

I didn't search hard to see if this had already been shared, but this came across my Facebook feed this morning...

Thanks for the link what a great article!

I know that the MQ Devs have said it's not about the money. But I was still curious how much the community has showed their appreciation. So I counted Brain's tip jar. 105 tippers over the last year that posted on the tip thread.

Let's just say that the average donation was $50. (I think that's too high, but have no way to judge.) So 105 x 50 = $5,250

Now let's say that Brain was putting in 10 hours a week to maintain the code. Again, I'm just reaching here, but 10 x 52 = 520 hours of labor per year.

5250/520 = $10.10 per hour. He'd make hella more money flippin burgers at McDonalds. Now I realize that he probably gets more tips than are reported on this site, but it's for sure he's not getting rich at this hobby!

I’ve been playing EverQuest for many years, and I first started using MacroQuest back when you had to build everything yourself. I enjoyed that playstyle quite openly for a long time.

until I ended up with a few suspensions.

I’ve never really understood what the leadership behind EverQuest is thinking. From my perspective, this community feels far more active and welcoming than the “legit” one.

The truth is, I never enjoyed EverQuest as much without MacroQuest, which is why I stopped playing about two years ago.

I completely understand why the MacroQuest and RedGuides community would want to focus on a more welcoming eqEmu scene, where this playstyle is accepted.

I’ve really enjoyed being part of this community, and I look forward to seeing you all on EQEmu!

Umm... aren't you like a quarter bit Borg, LoSictus of Borg. You read walls of AI like this:

pokes Sic :toot:

Truly a bummer. Rough time to come back lol STanding-by for the full and final and who knows maybe a EMU server will top the standing. Cheers everyone//

Glad I held off on firing my group back up after a small hiatus.

While I get the frustrations and challenges the devs face with Live, Emulation servers mostly suck.

P99 is meh, it’s full of neckbearded assholes. Both servers are stagnant and have well exceeded a “Classic” experience.

The PoP servers are “fine”, but Quarm has a 1200 player cap.

THJ is clearly becoming Legends.

Others have weird customizations and such. None go beyond RoF and there is a LOT of fun content after RoF. Also, Emu servers run bigger longevity risks than Live. P99 is, for now, an exception, but Rogean has moved on to EQ Legends.

Live, for all its shortcomings is best. Aside from that damn memory leak/doubled memory usage.

Maybe the hit to DBG’s bottom line will finally get them to ease up on folks using MQ for attended boxing.

Test Very Vanilla went down today with an uncertain future.

I want to first express my appreciation for all the Devs that have kept MQ going through the years. I've only used it for 4 years or so and I couldn't have played the game without it. I'm a father of twins and those early years were rough, and I would have had to quit EQ entirely. Very Vanilla allowed me to continue to play, but with a ton of spoiled milk on my shirt. :) Thank you, thank you, for your years of service!

I have faith test very vanilla will be back up. We have a great online community with tons of talent!

I'm going to encourage everyone that wants to continue on test to work on things they have always been meaning to work on that you never have enough time to do. Epic, TS, cheesements, ect.

I five boxed today and it was slow to begin with, but I got better and better. I love wizard dps these days!

Good luck everyone with anything you pursue!

Sad you guys had to do this. But I think it is a good idea because the Emu community is cool. And the live community is hostile and doesn't deserve the income from all your work.

I for one support this news.
I quit playing live/test for a couple years now and am currently playing on EMU servers. I tried most of the emu servers and there are some really good ones, like Ascendant and Lazarus.
I even fired up my own emu server to dink around in.

In doing so i came to the realization that the RoF2 client does not fully work up to RoF without heavy coding, in which i lack that sort of skill. So trying to cast a lvl 96 mage Shard of Air pet, it dont work and that sucks. RoF2 client needs an update, i am not saying a client needs to be current with live, that would cause the "the eye of DBG" to focus on EQEMU to much. It looks like Spire shows it handles up to Torment of Velious Expac so that would be a good client to go up to. Keep it like 5 expac behind live or something, but Its probably a nightmare to even make that work, hence why it has not been done yet.

ok, enough rambling.

I'll give a shout out to the RG devs for even lasting this long, it shows how much they care for this community and EQ. Good Job!

Looking forward to the future of RG. RAWR!!!!!!

Sad. I was thinking about coming back to EQ, but don't really want to play without it. Don't want to play on Emu either.

Guess i'm finally done with EQ.

I forsee one of two things happening with this change:
1) the drastic change in subs for live, resulting in the forced realization that there is a large demand for botting in EQ. Hopefully, that would result in box friendly servers (like Rizlona, or so they said it was box friendly)
2) The drastic uptick in EMU servers (this is guaranteed to happen), resulting in higher demand, more users, and more development. Eventually, a new EMU king will emerge, one that is updated often, has new content, etc. Spinoffs of this will be progression servers.

Overall, i am a huge fan of this idea. I feel it will give EQ users the true, NO FEAR option to box as many toons as they want.

Maybe this has been asked and answered but I haven't seen it. But why doesn't RG fork MQ to continue support for live and test? I have no problem paying more for my RG sub if this was possible.
I do realize MQ is open source and RG would have to follow the laws that govern open source.

> Please read my short summary on changes here <

we're hoping to find folks who want to continue keeping mq updated. MQ for live/test requires someone to do that - without out none of us have it

Thank you to the guys in the background who have tirelessly logged in each week and kept this code viable for all us players who play on the live version of the game. From a personal perspective, your efforts have enhanced my enjoyment of Everquest and allowed me to keep playing on servers with dwindling player bases. As a player well into his 50's, your code has also allowed me to play the way I used to before arthritis slowly started taking its toll in my hands and fingers. One of the greatest draws of Everquest for me is the fact that I don't need to button mash to hang out and play with friends that have been part of my online gaming community for the last 20 years.

The absence of your assistance on Live will have a huge impact and I really do hope that there is someone in this community that may be able to assist with at least keeping Very Vanilla acitve on live. A number of years ago I played on the EMU servers and found the experience less than rewarding. Many of the servers have a Shell version of Everquest that have all the quests stripped out of them and replaced with custom content. While this can be engaging, it does mean that everything I have loved about EQ is not present on those servers. I also believe that P99 (and its various servers) do not allow any form of MQ2 and are active in applying bans.

Again, thank you for all the work you guys have been doing over the years. I know that a decsion like this would have taken much conversation between you all and wouldn't have been entertained lightly. Daybreak, in recent years, have certainly not made your jobs any easier. Here's hoping there is a way forward that keeps the live base active!

I'm not much of a tech but I will do whatever is needed to keep Live being updated I also am willing to donate or pay more for my subs and plugins DBG is just out of their minds with the money they will lose over this it just be the final Nail in the coffin I'm not an EMU player so if the updates stop DBG loses my money and since finding red guides my wife and I both have full crews their lose it has been a pleasure being part of this with all of you

There's nothing preventing someone from making it work with Truebox servers. Anybody who can make it work for patches can easily make it work on Truebox. People bypass truebox and the one ip per client all the time on TLP servers.

Good evening everyone.
Like many of you, I’ve been processing the recent news and gauging where the community stands. I understand the urge to react immediately, but I’m asking everyone to join me in a "holding pattern" as we wait for the next patch. I am cautiously optimistic. Several talented individuals have stepped up to tackle the technical challenges coming on patch day. While I don’t have concrete answers yet, the "Bat-Signal" has been answered by people from across the MQ scene. We have to wait and see if these solutions hold in the coming patches.

Please wait for the patch before making final decisions on your accounts.
Do NOT do chargebacks against DB: This will result in an immediate account ban.
If you want to pause, simply cancel your subscription for now. This keeps your options open if MQ survives the patch.

Regarding CWTN Refunds
We were given as little notice as you were. We have always acted in good faith, and those who have dealt with Sic and me before know we aim to make the refund process painless. However, I ask for your patience. Let’s see how the patch plays out before we move forward with refund requests.

Whether Live survives or not, we are committed to keeping this community going. We are already working on bringing CWTN plugins to the EMU scene with some upgrades tailored to EMU. We'll be shifting from "hard-coded" logic to an "Addclicky" style system. This allows you to pick spells, AAs, and discs, and set their order for downtime, combat, or burns. This is essential for the custom mechanics found on EMU servers as Sic and I couldn't possibly go to every server and do custom mechanics for each one. We are shifting INI structures to allow the same character name across different servers as we expect it will be much more common for players to be on multiple servers on the same class with the same name.

I’ve been in EQ since 1999. The thought of this journey ending is heart-wrenching, but it shouldn't mean the end of our community. Whether we are on Live or exploring the EMU scene together, I want to keep playing and talking with all of you.
Let’s cross our fingers, wait for the patch, and see what "The Batmans" can do.

Optimistically,
CWTN

P.S. It's really hard to try and keep this message short and to the point. But I've removed as much "rambling" as I could from it in hopes it was a clearer message.

P.P.S. I have disabled the sale of the CWTN plugins for both me and Sic to prevent anyone from making another purchase of them. Users who currently have a license will still be able to download the plugins they have a license for.
Thanks for all your time and work I think I have used every one of your plugins and have never been happier I would pay more for them and like you I have been a player since its conception, and it breaks my heart to see it go but several years ago I had a life changing accident and wasn't able to play at the level anyone wanted to group with so from the bottom of my heart Thank you guys for not only keeping me playing but able to play a box group for as long as you have
