Perhaps some monetary incentive for the devs.....I am sure people woundnt mind subing them....get 1000 or so subs for $20 per month....Was this discussed anywhere? Just curious. I am sure i am not alone in this idea....

Ad nauseum.
They don't want your money.
Can always drop them a tip as a thank you for all their efforts over the years though! (I did).

I hope not.
algar is speaking for himself and not for RedGuides which does not want live to die.

now, I'm also not speaking *for* algar - maybe he means "hopefully folks who take up the call dont do it just to make money from the community" rather than "i hope no one takes it up". I definitely took it as the latter - but i try and remind myself that folks who are very emu focused often have their (justified and valid) reasons for disliking eq live / dbg.

for > me < and for RG - we certainly hope that mq for live/test continues AND we also look forward to increased emu support.

I hope it works out for RG. I don't plan on playing live or emu again at all but this community means a lot to me even with the people pushing for emu only.

Understood, but perhaps a new team could be incentivized. :)
They should be somehow

I never said I wanted live to die.
He was talking about paying devs (and MQ sub models maybe?)
I sure as fuck hope that doesn't become a thing.

Edit: so yes, what you said :)

When I played on Live I was squarely in the 'EMU Sucks! Its old and missing content!' camp. Then my cleric perished in a banwave and I gave it a chance. #neverforget

Project Lazarus is definitely not the EMU I was expecting. I will bet that its not the EMU you all imagine as well.

There's genuinely minimal jank and random bugs, for me it runs smoother than live and zone times are near instant. Most of the technical issues people face are due to poor optimization (there's a guide for that). The Lazarus discord is the place to go for support. When you encounter something wonky, open a ticket and its handled.

Yeah the era is OoW-DoN but there's so much custom stuff to do that it feels like a new take on my favorite game. Remember when GMs were active, ran events and community gatherings, randomly showed up and interacted with you? When was the last time that happened on live? It happens all the time on Lazarus. Active GMs who love the community and make it fun. I believe this is peak EQ that recreates the magic from my youth.

The socialization was pleasantly surprising. The guild I belong to on Lazarus supports your journey from early days all the way to uber level end game. When you are ready, you join a split of other people who also box their own group, and you become your own autonomous raid force tackling content at your own pace. Its the most fun I've had with EQ period. No more hiding in the shadows, no more sweating when my MQ is showing. No more jumping through stupid hoops so the white knights on live don't report me. Just pure EQ enjoyment with my raid split homies. Have a MQ question? Ask it in ooc, you'll get lots of help and suggestions. There are very very few dbags on Lazarus, the community kinda drives them out on its own.

Don't be too quick to shit on EMU because 'its old'. Its not entirely the truth.

If Lazarus vanished into a black hole tomorrow, I'd give EQMight a try. Algar has always said great things about that server too.
beep beep, who got the keys to the jeep

Seeing as RB just posted this thread on Monday, perhaps we should let the dust settle and see how things look in a week or two. Money does not always solve all challenges.

I am hoping for the best, meaning both (live and EMU) will be an option. I have an affinity for both now. I also, to my bad luck, have two scripts I wanted to put out for live..but need to wait to see what will happen. High hopes and best wishes for our new coders that are taking on the challenge for MQ to help us all.

Thank you for staying so positive RF!

We'll get some clearer guidance around resources and LLM use in a bit, I've been meaning to make a thread on it for a month now.

If a team or individual takes up the calling to branch and support live, please post on how I can support you from a $ perspective. Crossing fingers.

i mean with enough money this could all be solved, we're just not likely to raise that much.

Lay it on the table. Were is the gofund me for this so said "total"

Now maybe im wrong / miss read some stuff but it seems like it boils down to obviously burnt out and money. If they only rely on donations then that aint gonna cut it. Whats it take to add them to payroll? if that was a concern

well:
- a lot of folks are working on things
- - many of them aren't looking to "get paid"
- some folks are saying they'll work on things but want money
- some folks think that this is an opportunity to get rich

RG is championing several efforts to try and get it going

after the test/live patch coming up, we're going to have a better idea of what needs the most focus to get a live/test build like we would like.

@Redbot is working on some ideas on how to best support those efforts.

I'd continue to request folks to just try and be patient while the folks working on stuff do their magic - only time will tell what the future looks like.

for many folks - the 3 devs included and especially - it isn't about money. the "cat and mouse" with dbg is time consuming, stressful, and can be exhausting. the continued baspend waves and hostility from eq and then the subsequent shit-talking a small few folks do to the devs *probably* takes a toll - I know it takes a toll on me seeing people shit talk brain (who's very fucking generous with his time and knowledge). This continued idea that "if we throw money at brain/knightly" that it will somehow change i just not the answer imo.

Please be patient folks - we all know it sucks -

My only complaint with any of this is the constant EMU resets because they open and close... did this with WoW EMUs and it gets old fast. I have established live toons for years now, with lots of collections, making it hard to just up and leave. The sad reality is that this is exactly do I think EQ will die over it... No, but I do think they are taking steps for that, trying to rid the "cheaters." Sadly, they don't realize that MQ users make up a huge margin of the player base across servers no matter what I will remain playing games if not this than the next lots of them coming out that play simillar to EQ and are modernized.

Hrm

@E9er how long has your emu been around? 10+ years?

1 off case... There are a lot of WOW emus that have been around a long time. Also, what if I don't like that player base or that community, or possibly the rates or ruleset... lots of factors here, I still have an account on p99, look how long it has been. I'm not looking for facts or objections; this is my opinion. I have been around many, many EMU from all different MMOs. I have seen big companies C&D them after even 10 years of being in operation... all it takes is one, because ultimately you can't fight millions of dollars .... ask Blizzard Entertainment essentially if this is the end of MQ/RG as it was, that's fine, I can't change that anyway since I do not possess the skillset nor funds... im just a peon in a wheel.

I'm not telling anyone to play emu and stfu and like it (nor is anyone else), but many folks are trying to help clarify some pervasive and persistent misinformation about them.

I do not want live to go away. should be pretty clear, but in case it isn't > Please read my short summary on changes here <

I'm hoping the "become an emu first / and we want you to play" is a slight overadjustment and that live is able to continue. I actually *do* think that even live players might enjoy a foray into EMU - there are some servers that are pretty sweet

it is pretty clear that mq/eq is volatile - what happens if EQ completely nukes the possibility of MQ? same boat

anyhow - time will tell.
rg is doing what it can

Indeed, I 100% agree. I appreciate all of the hard work the team has done over the years. I just hope it doesn't end me personally. I will and always prefer live just because we don't know the fate of a community-hosted private server, I mean, I guess we don't even know the state of live either, with db running it.

I remain cautiously optimistic about live/test being able to continue. Ive seen alot of people that doesnt include who the RG team is talking about already trying to find a solution. Between them and RG I think it just might be possible. I expect there to be some downtime, from a week to maybe a few months, who knows, but I think eventually a solution will be found. I like many others was doom and gloom with the initial announcement, but after a few days of processing it, I decided why worry about what I cant control. If live isnt able to continue, then I save $650 a month on cancelled subs lol I believe I win in either scenario!

I dont see why not charge if its a good tool. Most probably would pay for it, as same as plugins, but need a balance or players might not have money to get all they need. I dont mind pay a fair prize per year, something like that.
Unfortiontunatelly, for me, EMU is not something I would join. If I get to that, I will find another game just. We have to many opitions in this modern world!
Hope, and hope trully, everything get on trail and MQ keeps going and nothing changes. Then I keep also going on EQ. Otherwise, its an end for me and some I know as well.

I never knew that "tip the Devs" was just that. I always thought y'all split all the profits from the plugins. I never gave it any thought really and that's my fault. I have left tips on occasion, but not religiously. I feel like a cheap whore now!!

I guess you have been unaffected by the increased agression on Live by DBG to the MQ community? I rarely even played live because of this but continued to get suspension notifications. When my Live accounts are getting suspended / banned frequently and I lose access to them - how is this different than an EMU possibly shuttering eventually? Last year I entirely stopped playing live because of this and I still recently got an email about being suspended.

Its hard to complain about the rare occasion that a low population EMU shutters when your live accounts are getting suspended much more frequently. It's always been a bit of a cat and mouse game but it was generally a 'safe' thing to use basic MQ functionality. The cause of the change here is that DBG keeps ramping up the aggression and making it obvious that they no longer value the revenue from MQ users.

I'd rather invest my time in an EMU community that embraces how I want to play and creating new opportunities to enjoy the game with less risk of a rugpull.

The cwtn plugins are sold (and paid taxes on) by me and cwtn.

Just like other stuff that is sold here by other folks.

Stuff for sale is listed with the recipient of those things as the resource owner

I've said a bunch already, mq is open source, the mq devs are not redguides.

Yah I think it is likely. Well have a better idea next Tuesday and the following Wednesday

Is the process of updating Test the same as updating Live? So if the Test update is successful in a bit here, the Live update will also be successful?

As a former dev, I know what it's like having a large (usually crappy) code base dropped on you to maintain or upgrade. It's awful, unsatisfying work with little interesting coding work to do.

Now, combine that with a user base that doesn't understand how the dev/release process works, and then gets angry and complainy (yeah it's not a word) on patch day if there's a 1 hour delay.

Now, throw on top of that an adversary trying to constantly fuck up the work you have done (Daybreak) ... every month ... without end.

I honestly can't believe the devs kept at it as long as they did. You couldn't pay me enough to take on a project like that, and they were doing it for FREE. I don't blame them one bit for their decision.

To the people suggesting they should spend even more time 'transitioning' to a new set of devs, think about it from their perspective ... if you just quit a shit job for no money, how much effort would you put into transition?

For us mouth breathers who have no idea what kind of time sink fixing eq after each patch is, how many hours does it generally take? I know it’s going to be vastly different for people of different skill levels, but I feel like knowing a ballpark number that these guys are dedicating from their busy lives could make everyone appreciate them before they’re gone.

10 minutes to infinity minutes
There's not really a good answer.

We should appreciate them regardless. Look at us scrambling in their absence:p
