If your looking for self sufficient one too. A Troll Beastlord is a good choice also. You have a great pet that you can heal, you also can slow plus you can melee. If you want to add a Merc Healer to help you when you melee that's good, but you can also add a Rogue or Wizard Merc to kill faster.
If you're a poor player with no help the choice is Mage. He doesn't need gear except mana Regen at lower levels and damage focus at higher levels. And you have the best pets in the game. I would pair an earth tanking pet which you can heal with a Rogue Merc.

I really enjoy my shaman, went all the way to 125 on my own, using a melee DPS merc most of the time (with the pet tanking). Now at 125 I have killed most of the named mobs in TOB (although this part is not quick, some kills take almost 15 minutes).
I'm also having fun doing the heroic AAs achievements; with a tank merc its really quick (it breaks havoc non-stop with me healing and the pet also getting some action
).
