If you play test you have *most of the benefits of a paid subscription, for free.
The best Free to play class is one that does not depend on gear (in My opinion). Like a Warrior, Shadow Knight, Paladin.
I am assuming you are not planning to burn a KRONO anytime soon. So best bet is the Caster /priest class which can do the most by using their spell casting abilities

As stated above, F2P is fine however you want to burn a Krono at some point in the leveling process to get all your AAs then you go back to F2P and get to keep all the AAs. Do this on every account and then you're golden. I'd recommend a paid sub on your driver if it's the tank.

What level do yall typically recommend burning a Krono? Let's say you're leveling a FTP toon from 1-125? At what points would you burn a Krono?
Depends on class a bit, but really depends where you're gonna spend your time at the most.
I like to Krono 10ish levels before maxing out a toon, so I can get strong AA xp with the main toons before going to max level.
If I wasn't PLing and instead leveling from scratch that'd change a lot.
You’ll hit a wall with all melee classes north of 65-70 …same for pet classes since you need the aa to solo/survive.
You can get much further if you can fix a friendly boxer that’s climbing up that’ll let you pwlvl with them
I will preface this with this is the way that I do it not the Holy be all way to do it.
But the meathod that I use is get the toon to 125 if thats the goal, then burn the krono. Then it will give you 30 days to grind out what ever aas you did not get from autogrant.
Now here is how you get those aas. I hope you have other toons for this to work.
Form a fellowship of 6 existing 125's and the new 125. Set them all to sharing in the fellowship window.
Take the 6 existing 125s and put them in a spot you like to use to just grind in.
Now make another group of 5 + the new 125 and put them in another place you like to grind in. can even be in the same zone to make it easier to keep an eye on them.
Once the group in the fellowship hit the capped stage in the fellowship window, the new 125 in the 2nd group will start to cap out at 5 aas per kill when they get their vitality from the rest of their fellowship.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh Yes, a MAGE once you maxed AAs with a krono and get the BEST FTP EM earring. Would be better to wait till June so they can hit 125.
That's next June, not this one.

I've never considered doing FTP on a Live server as I mainly play on TLPs and Test. What is the delay in the release of the F2P Expacs? Sounds like quite a bit.
2.5 years after release(and auto grant is 4yrs after). Still applies to test, though. Expacs haven't been free there in a very long time (just for clarity for anyone else reading this).

I used a Krono at about 85 for all characters, and another at 120 on my 'extra' (non-tank) toons.
My main tank I used Kronos on fairly regularly to get the autogrant. Now he's 125 and max AAs, so he's no longer subscribed. After about 80 my SK tank was getting crushed, and I was using two healers to keep him alive most of the time. That's when I decided he needed to be subscribed to still play the game.
You could probably play all the way to 125 without Kronos if you just hunted greens after about LVL 85, and if you could play 24x7
. I've seen a few afk bot groups that I'm sure were doing this.
Summary if want to mostly FTP:
-Sub your tank after about 80
-Krono your other characters at 80 and 120
-Expect slow leveling, and plan to play older content

Free to Play is worth it . A great way to experiment with class group combinations !
If you are planning to stay FTP the whole time. I would suggest Pet classes, they are not geared dependent and can take on tough stuff without dying easy.
Picks are 1) Mage, 2) Necromancer, 3) BeastLord ( although not a true Pet class, the pet can tank and do nice damage easily)
Shaman is also good but pet is a lot weaker
So a nice little FTP team would be:
1) Mage
2) Mage
3) Necromancer
4) Necromancer
5) BeastLord
6) Shaman
Shaman plays Healer and buffer only and this group kicks anything's ass all the way though , BeastLord is your puller

Any of them, as other people stated above, but caster classes have an easier time because they don't depend much on gear. However, it all really just comes down to AAs in the end because of the amount of extra power they give. If you're not too keen to pay for Gold status to unlock all AAs, the Test server gives you every benefits of a Gold membership status for free, and therefore give you access to all AAs. Although, you have to take in account that that RedGuide's MQ is down more often on Test than on Live servers, because of Test's weekly patching.

The game is still as fun when its FTP, I generally only keep the Tank as Sub, makes such a massive difference in your groups ability, but I find the differences between paid/ftp for DPS classes are really not worth it.
Rangers are not bad at F2P back up. They really don't do much with bow till after level 85 but can deal some good damage in higher levels and from a distance so your paid tank can take all the credit and pretend like the ranger did not just pop off a XXXX mil critical bow shot and kill the mob.
And we do double damage on a non-rooted/non-moving mob.
I used to fill in for the healer in lower levels (Walls of Slaughter etc) before mercs came out too.

casters, healers - f2p isnt too bad after you krono them to max the AA
melee and tanks - Hdex dependancy makes the melee dps classes a bit worse off, and tanks expecially suffer from FTP
If you never intend to fight in content within 5 levels of you, then you can probably stay FTP after kronoing any class

I have finished the group missions/progression of every expansion in FTP groups. SK + cleric + Shaman + Bard + 2 melees of your choice pretty much can beat anything. Obviously, this is after max level/AAs via 1 krono per expansion per character. You can do the same with a caster group changing bard for chanter and shaman for druid (or heck, just keep the shaman over the druid if you want). Having 2 healers...one of which is a cleric (cleric + shaman or cleric + druid) is the key for solid FTP groups in my experience.

Have you really tried a Paladin with good gear? Or are you comparing a paladin with FTP gear VS a Mage raid tier 3 EM XXXXXXXXI pet?
I doubt a pet can beat a paladin in tanking, I need a confirm on this statement, ofc my AI pet at lvl 125 will beat my weak paladin at lvl 109 with a newb player behind the keyboard..
I use a paladin and BST/ Mage pets all the time.. both FTP gear with maxed AA's, pets dies fast and my paladin stands firm, paladins are such underrated class now, most seems to be stuck in Veil of Alaris -era when it comes to Paladins.
In ToV, I play there atm.. I only game on the FTP expacs.. my BST pet at lvl 117 dies VS 2 mobs in ToV.. my paladin can tank like 10 of the same mobs, and agg them all.. both got the same terms in the group.. (One healer and some DPS's toons) Soo I don't know where you get the info from.

Yes, the math is the same…raid geared and its even further apart in best ftp gear. Mage earth or air pet handles group tanking better with ftp EM and it gets ridonkolous with top game EM

For humor … armored breakdancing pallie

Strange, not my experience at all.. maybe we play on different rules.
I would be happy to see a pet tank lets say, Zlandicar in CoV, for a start. (Ofc, the EM will be staged as it should in that range of expac)
I got all 3 tanks in the game, and I always choose to tank with paladin, they can heal fast and actually do some dps now.
But! I don't know if the pets have gotten a massive buffs in the latest 3 expac's? I haven't played them yet.
But in the end it all comes down to how we play the game.

Meh i could burn down zlandi in 110 snowbound tov gear with mage mage beast bard enc cleric in like 90 seconds when cov first came out at 110…
Just fire off your mage/enc runes, pop all your pets, swarms, clickies…and go full burns on all…usually by the 3rd or 4th nuke rotation shit would be dead
Fastest time on same ftp team above for griklor is like 9 seconds…

Griklor is weak, yes.. my record is also around 10seconds.
But, you don't need to show me if you don't wanna convince me, I got the same toons to spare to try it out myself. 5bucks I got wiped in 60sec, 2 hits from Zlandi will kill the pets.

Told ya…mage/beast > pallies. Dps makes all the difference, specially if you have the right buffs, songs, synergy. Shit just melts…by the time stuff starts to actually damage an earth or air pet they’re usually almost dead…you stack a cleric with mq2cleric, ka, or eqmercs on them…
