Been 6 boxing for a while and considering trying 12 and then 18. Anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to start boxing 18 for the first time?

figure out your goals
ensure you can manage your team
- - can you move your CC to a place
- - can you make your tanks move by themselves to a spot
- - can you easily setup raid groups and set RAMA

managing your team is going to be just as important as what you have in your force.

I think that stepping up slowly before going the full 18 is a wise move. You have to crawl before you can walk.....

^100%.. once you get 3+ groups, its even more about control then normal 1-2 groups.. you have to know who is doing what, how x automation reacts, and have overrides or tweaks as Sic points out make them do the RIGHT stuff.. otherwise gonna be headaches and lots of deaths..

I find it easier to box multiple teams when all are using the same plugins (KA, RGMercs, CWTN, etc.). I'm no expert, but with multiple groups, start with targets that are pure tank n spank kills. That way you can work on getting everyone to move as one. Adapting to various other mechanics is where the real fun begins.

HAH! Refuse Doc James's wisdom. Jump in the deep end. DOOOOOOOO it!
<editors note> Please ignore the troll and return to your regularly scheduled programming <editors note end>

I say that, but when I started using the automations, I did so with a gusto. It was more then I could handle. I broke my brain. I had to start over, much smaller with fewer expectations of myself and take the time to walk from the steps, into the shallow end, before getting to the 5' area. Much less moving to an Olympic sized pool. Your Mileage May Vary.

Does the deep end include a full 6 groups? Because, brain breaking seems to go well with that size of an army. I hope someone puts it on YouTube.

spend a bunch of time with a notepad and pen. think about your group and raid situation, then
think about all the buttons you will want to control them.
configure button-master or your socials, on your current group then when u make 12 more toons you can 'copy the UIs' etc

standardise your UIs, all casters the same, all melee the same, etc ... common buttons in common places, specific buttons elsewhere etc.

consider your LEMs or events, and make sure they are as specific as needed or as generic as possible. configuration for your group can be lazy, or full of assumptions that might not be true when scaling to 18. for example, bard do X, works fine for a group with 1 bard, but if your raid has 3 bards, do you want them all to do X or not.

think alot first, then do. scaling is complex, start from the most hygenic base as possible. future you wil be thankful

Some great advise here and a lot of it is spot on.

One thing that hasn't been talked about yet is optimizing your computer setup for boxing.

EQ can mostly run on a potato, but when you start pushing 12, or 18 accounts the load/lag can be a real drag.

Make sure you have a good hud that shows the status of all your characters.
- You absolutely need to know what they are all doing at a glace.

Work on your tools.
- Know how to get them all to follow, stop, attack, etc.

If you are on a live server you may want to think about how you can make moving around a little more stealthy than just playing follow the leader and having 17+ characters chasing after you.

To Dewey's point this same command has a lot of use and sits in notepad for me to use for a ton of things:

/noparse /dgza /docommand /timed ${Math.Rand[0,600]} /travelto zoneshortname
/noparse /dgza /docommand /timed ${Math.Rand[0,600]} /nav locxyz

You can also use 15 and 30 second variations or make the formula more complex. Now....there's nothing really stealthy about 18 toons running the exact same path even if it is 30, 60, 90 seconds apart, but I guess it might make ya feel better to make the effort.

So movement tip (though own drawbacks).. Run your rogue group your "spot", drop a campfire, bring the second group associated with that campfire, then plant a guild banner... BOOM can GH port as many as you want...

Yep - this works great when your fellowships and GH banner are setup that way which mine aren't for "reasons" so gotta make do.

Aye, have to be "your" guild or a understanding group of friends guild of why you planted rando guild banner to raid. Also white knight folks see "sameguild" bannering around they might be tempted to report.. so give and take~

I was a 6boxer for years then a year and a half ago a EQ friend and i both started 18 boxing. I can tell you its the funnest i have had in EQ. We each set up a tank group with 2 war sk bard Shammy Cleric. Then a melee dps group of your liking . I like Bard shammy BL Ranger rog monk. Then a caster group. I run bard druid chanter mag nec cleric. This way i can make 3 full xp groups. Tank healer slower dps so i can reload AAs / xp . We have all of LS down and the first 2 of TOB. We have not tried any other TOB but hope to soon. Good Luck and have fun with your setup.

Thanks all for these posts. I’m starting to expand groups as well and it’s helpful to see! Torn between “I want to raid and evolve stuff” and “I don’t trust anyone” so I’ll have to learn it all 🤣

I know the boat you're in quite well. I've been fortunate that my guild are all RL friends. So, they don't cringe at seeing me box a small borg collective. They do enjoy seeing a ton of names in the online guild roster when I'm playing though, LOL. Plus, the added benefits of achievements and access to various raid drops on the encounters I can do :)

How to know if you can expose yourself as a boxer to your guildmates? Well, it'll be a different scenario for anyone out there. Since my guild is very small and only a handful of us returned during Covid, it was a small risk for myself. If you're in a larger guild, I wouldn't recommend it though as you're more likely to fall under some backlash.

Hey Sic, there is a ton of content and a lot of historical data. If someone was brand new to EQ and MQ, what would be your top 3 links to "manage your team"?

Thank you, and the rest of MQ,
Irish

@yost19 sure…
Tip #1 - war/enc/cleric your main force
Tip #2 - crowd control is your friend
Tip #3 - find a dead zone nobody ever goes to with rough terrain, pathing issues, and shit that just hits hard…and practice there…

My main group id usually war/sk + enc + bard + cleric + ber + rogue…i park it somewhere…and zerker chain pulls shit to it…bard and enc usually have…meh 7-10 things mezzed and everyone is assisting off that one tank… can usually pull half or quarter zones at a time and clear in mind with 3 groups…pretty fun but pisses people off…much more fun to spawn solo raids just for me and let shit run kn there for hours…

Last tip…all chars (except mt) are max lvl, max aa, max trophy in best ftp gear

Nothing funner than training @Sic while he's moving his toons...everyone should do it at least once...

think about your goals for 18 boxing and make a final comp that works well with it. also think about how many tanks you want. i gain dps by using 2 tanks in my 18 man but i also have to run the third group through missions with the tanks. otoh you can just sit and grind now to get past 110 and having 2 groups pling a third group makes leveling alot better if you arent the type of person to do prog and all the missions.

if you can easily do current live content missions with 6 scaling up to 18 is just getting used to the tools that make that easier like box hud and lootly / lootier. incase you dont do it already use autologin and hotkey your windows. have something to pause and unpause your automation in the same spot on everyone so you can quickly go to the problem and take control if there is a problem.

Youre going to zone alot slower look into doing things to speed it up like not having a collection house on your 18 people , retire all your unique duplicates in overseer. dont be a fucking hoarder and clean your bank out of items you will never use.

the game has to load your entire inventory your bank your house inventory and your overseer units every time you zone. my houses are the 8 trophies im using. my bank is my ts trophies and ts tools that dont go in the ts depot. every time there is an event where you get unique overseer agents i always retire my extras when its done. my inventory is clickies i use frequently like jann veil poisons for melee and my food and drink and my feedme food and drink.

i run two monitors with two windows on each screen so i run frame limiter at 30 foreground 15 back ground because i dont like to see them look frozen. play around with flame limiter to get it how you like it.
