with the recent > changes < and uncertainty with live/test. What would you like to see for EMU?

(RedGuides has no plans on *hosting/owning/running* an emu server)

We know there could be better stuff for things like:
- redfetch flexibility for multiple server installs
- cwtn plugins (like has been asked a bunch)
- kiss updates
- Updated setup guides and scripts to make your EverQuest RoF2 Client (or whatever version the emu community gets up to) run on emu with a click.
- guides/support?/redfetch? to help you install/run a local emu

What are things you would like to see at/from RG to make your emu experience better?

Redfetch setting up a local server would be pretty nice, especially with a choice between Windows and Linux. If that's not doable then guides for installation of your own private servers. There is information on the EQ Emu site and discord but if RG is going to focus on EMU it would be nice to have a thread here. Finding information on discord using search is third rate at best. It's possible that I am just old and stuck in my ways.

I setup a local server today to see how the process has changed since Akkadius hung it up and it's not quite as straight forward as it used to be to get all the tools and server up and running. It's certainly doable but a bit of a chore.

Beyond that you covered my major asks with your post. Namely CWTN plugins and easier support for multiple emu servers within redfetch.

Some of our favorite tools available here would be great but there are so many variations of epic quests, spells, class modifications, etc on the more modified servers. Epic Laziness as an example would be nice to have but I imagine it would be a pain to do for anything beyond the vanilla versions of quests up to 2.0
 
Live side everyone understands. EMU though, has a stigma of feelings of a TLP or shoddy only online for a month server where the owner will drop out and then all your play evaporates. Those are valid but there is more to EMU than that, and a lot has yet to be explored. EMU is a two fold, MMO and personal server version of the game. RedGuides needs time to find their path as well as what we members want.

Some thoughts:
yes guides and new very simple setups for both style EMU will help make people be members as well as share what they build. Nothing exists that I know of for 'Resources' that would Mod an EMU, so in time it could be a path. Example, Red, I made FroggyWorld, wanna come play on my server or I just posted Froggy World Mod. Where you play as Frogloks have taken over as the dominant race, swapping NPC models in Freeport with Frogloks. A small story build around it, tools that can eventually be built to make this type thing. Yes its in the future and my example is a bit grand in concept, just trying to push the concepts.

  • Smaller mods, things that can be done in current times (and actually exist now): RF go download the 40 slot bag mod so your EMU can have those. I click Watch, open RedFetch and it asks me where to put, and Boom.. when I start MY EMU (MMO or personal) my server now has 40 slot bags.
  • New NPCs to help things function easier until we have the newer expansions.
  • How to setup your own AllaClone (Allakazam, these exist) or personal Magelo (also exists). Easier and maybe more modernized versions.
  • New Guides to help us fix issues (like a double NPC) in game, how to simply delete one is a giant helpful guide. OR......new install methods where things are easier.
  • MMO guides with the big picture in mind. Want to run a server for 50+ people, here is how I did it through AWS or whatever.
  • Personal server setup for just you AND the easy ability to let your friend(s) jump on. "Dude, I gave Nagafen a new home in Commonlands and he has 20 Drakkin guards loyal to him' Come jump on my server tonight and lets kill him. This is awesome man, submit your Mod to RG for Redbot's Yearly Mod Challenge.
Just a few ideas..unchartered territory is amazing. Deeper storylines can be written for people who love lore or always wanted to tell a story. More instant action with less grind for others. EMU provides something that SO many fantasy games have... a 6 man team. Pretty normal for many games. With MQ this has been our way, for me I think I prefer that manner over multiclass, but no reason to fight, you can have BOTH. DBG are idiots to not have a MQ 6 man game.
 
It is hard for me to state what I would like to see from RG with regards to EMU. There is already a robust offering for those that just want to play. But if I were to pick one thing I would like to see RG push more on the development side and see if we can't get some of the expansion data pushed closer ROF era. It would be cool to have a tool pack that can spawn up ROF era servers. I know most servers are fiddling around with DoN era so i think pushing that further would be awesome.
 
My "big Idea" would be a launcher of sorts for Emu servers that RG supports.
Many (most) Emu servers have custom content and have a number of files that need to be installed over or with the original client files.
The RG Emu Server launcher would have a curated list of servers to choose from
The end user (me or you) would need to provide a zip or a folder where a clean ROF2 client lives.
The first time a user selected a server, the launcher would copy the rof2 files (or maybe symlink?) into a server folder and install the patched files
Somehow the MQ autologin needs to work with this (I'm kind of fuzzy on how that would look). But it should be easy to take an existing account and create new characters on a new Emu server and have it patched and ready to go.
Curation is important as no two server operators patch in the same way. Some provide files in Discord Servers, some use Google Drive, some have a web page. This would help.

TLDR; This, and community.

Setting up a server is way easier than it used to be (it ws 14 years ago when I last did Emu development) with the Akk Stack - it's a little buggy but it basically works. I also think that most folks would want to play with others.

Client management- this is the real pain. I have 3 or 4 installs of ROF2, one for EGMight, Lazurus, my local server etc. It's not the end of the world, but a simplified patching process would be better.

Here's the biggest thing for me- the RG community; I went from the OSS version of MQ2 to here, and from EQEmu to live because, ultimately, of gatekeepers or primadonnas. (luckily these eventually throw their toys out of the pram and are no longer in those communities anyway). But RG had none of that. Passionate, helpful people.

The other thing that drew me here was KissAssist, it was definitely the best macro I had used. There is an obvious main rival on Emu (E3N). Not sure what yoy'd want to do there...

I'd like to see RG help shape the popular opinion of emu. Look at discord, as soon as emu is brought up someone is bound to shit on it. Look at the changes thread, most people think emu is some random dumpster dive computer running a sketchy instance of eq in some dude's garage for friends. I'm sure that exists but the mainstream popular emus are legitimate, highly available, quality experiences run by people with a passion for the game and the community. Emu EQ can be whatever one wants it to be, there's a ton of different experiences out there. Different takes on the game, different instances, quests, items, and raids. If you want some power fantasy where you can pull an entire zone and somehow survive it, there's servers for that. If you want a more grounded experience with some quality of life features, those exist too. There are even servers that are as vanilla as vanilla gets and you are going to grind your ass off if thats your thing. Lazarus is constantly adding new experiences using whatever assets the ROF2 client supports. There's some amazing stuff out there and RG has some talented folks who might find a passion in creating these sorts of things.

Redbot's criteria for what constitutes an emu server RG could get behind was a great start. I agreed with all of that. I'd also like to see RG reach out to popular emus and get conversations started to offer support and enthusiasm. Find out where their challenges are and see where RG can help. Do they need people to code instances and raids? More content? Do they have technical challenges they can't seem to overcome? Do they just need a friend? On Lazarus, there is a divide between E3 and RG. Lets mend those fences and be a resource for emu folks. How can our infrastructure and Redfetch help others who created their own tools for emu?

I think if RG is going to dive into emu there's a lot that can be done.
 
I COULD host a RG centric emu server while not being officially related to the site to keep it separate. Those of you that know me know my servers stay up for years. If there's interest in it. Nova-EQ stayed in the launcher server list for like half a decade (Where I worked on a lot of nav meshes at first). An update borked it and since no one used it I didn't bother fixing it.

we strongly encourage folks who want to make their own rg friendly server!

That would be awesome wired, I'm sure folks would love more options

we just won't be hosting one ourself - including managing, GMing, disputes etc
 
with a few exceptions most emu will have you download the spells and strings text as well as skills.
instead of having to keep separate folders for each emu. it would be cool to keep a folder with those server specific changed files and have the autologin swap them into memory for us on load.
similar to how the eqclient.ini swap works for different character profiles.

currently you wind up with a folder for each server and you could symlink everything and add those files to the list to not link also works.
I just think having this in the autlogin would be super nice for QOL.
 
Speaking about this pragmatically (hate on me all you want for being negative nancy):

What makes servers popular seems to be exciting ideas, fun gameplay or twists, new content, QoL additions, and active development... otherwise you get the exact stagnant "old eq" that everyone seems to think EMU is.

That will work for some people, but those servers already largely exist in the ranks of the emu server list, and they are often ghost towns. Perhaps already having an established community would help with that? Its the other thing that the interest in the above needs to generate, so you'd have that advantage.

I wouldn't put the time into it unless you were actually going to put the time into it, personally.

Adding to this, you'd have to get the popular server operators on board! I know some of them already expose a download location for server files, and some of them don't... couple of them have patchers even.

Very interesting idea! Might make it a good bit less work to try something out!

You really have to or the heat becomes an issue or the fans run on full speed the entire time and that gets loud. I found if you lower the CPU voltage you can achieve 95% of the same performance in benchmarks and eliminate the heat issues.
 
Maybe already been mentioned and I know there are the official EMU forums to get support but I think it would be great to have a section dealing with hosting EMU servers and development. From hardware and server software support or hosting services that are legit to use.

How to write quest scripts, custom item design and how to get it functioning in game. How to make a custom NPC. I mean the official forums are okay but their is a lot of out dated material that comes up when trying to find something.

Home network will likely be the bigger negative impact - not bandwidth but just reliability (10-20 Mbps would be sufficient generally). Some providers are garbage. Core number and core speed will help. RAM for 1K active players probably needs to be 64GB

Additionally, https://docs.eqemu.dev/ is a wealth of info re: hosting, developing, or managing a server. Scripts are Perl and Lua. Server source is open also.
 
EMU Servers in Redfetch would be excellent. Especially the mesh files. I'd be willing to help on this.

Updating spell files and whatnot with all the different servers is kind of a pain.

The autologin would be great, with a right-click and copy profiles option, if you are a person like me who uses the same toon names and stuff on each one. I don't think the change in the installation path works well with the profile groups, too.

Looting is a huge QoL drop from Live. I'm testing some new stuff that seems to work well, but it still needs finishing.

MA and Raid MA are earned on EMU, and I don't think they still operate as well as live. The class plugins would need to have an MA from a drop-down list for people in your group or raid to assist with.

Dannet is pretty bad on EMU. I would be fine with 2-27 toons on live without any issues. I've had to revert to Eqbcs because either zones aren't respected or it doesn't work across zones:/dg will only work in the zone, whereas /dgza does.

I'm willing to start adapting my stuff to EMU as well. I'd be willing to use all of my AI kungfu tokens to help anyone else out.
 
Having just stood up 24 characters on my first emu server, these would be my pain points or things that made it more of a slog than it should be.

1. Where to get the files. The files are literally everywhere: this web page, that Discord channel, oh wait, that one is in an announcement, nope, not that announcement, there is a later one that has the same files. Because it is disorganized, it is very cumbersome to start and switch. Some servers are better than others but they all look a lot like the kitchen junk drawer to some degree.

2. Login server registration: With the limitations on login server account creations and the need to use multiple email addresses if you want to spin up a small raid (24 in my case), that was probably an hour just setting up the email addresses or aliases, using them to register login server accounts, creating the character accounts, etc.

3. Character planning, checking for name availability, setting up the profiles in MQ, etc. I understand why the character and login database is encrypted, but it sure does make it time-consuming compared to just editing a file.

4. Once inside the game, I was TOTALLY lost. I left during Velious (yeah like 2001) and came back to Live about 8 months ago. That is a HUGE gap in time, commands, functions, and game systems, so the learning curve is real, and there are not always good knowledge sources to get a player up to speed. Just the basic slash commands for getting unstuck and such.

5. Setting up the UI for everyone, getting RGmercs going, and Lootnscoot configured and started.

What made RedGuides so enticing is that when I began, I only needed to know just a couple of things. I needed to know how to install the RedGuides launcher and remember /Mac KissAssist. I know this may sound stupid, and I promise I am not a charter member of the short bus squad, but the simplicity of the tooling makes the learning curve more approachable. Those two things were enough to get me started in-game and doing something instead of reading some forum post from when Lincoln was president. I would also like to add that Discord is great for shooting the shit, but it is an absolutely horrendous knowledge source for search. It's great if there is a human there with the knowledge, but the RG forums are a textbook example of how knowledge (even some really old knowledge) can be maintained and remain useful.

So my wish list is simple to state but complex to execute. Focus on wrapping, curating, validating, and tooling that supports the idea of "get someone off the ground in 15 minutes or less" on the EMU side of the house. This community has so much to offer because the foundations were there for folks to contribute and brainstorm, I have no doubt this can be the same way in with the EMU side of the house. Once folks are off the gorund and progressing, some of those people are going to say "yeah this thing sucks" or "that system sucks" and some of those are going to try to make it better. Some of those projects will fail, some of them will be personal, but some of them will end up with a resource on RG that makes it just a tiny bit easier for some total moron like myself to get started down the path.
 
I'll be the umteenth call for an organized, curated guide that is up to date on a "1-click install" for spinning up your own private server. Obviously the largest repo was managed by someone no longer willing to continue in that vein- precisely at a time when there is so much focus an desire to play EMU. It's not just the community here at RG that suddenly has more interest in the EMU scene, there are a lot of manual players who just want to play EQ without the hostility that DPG has been displaying against the playerbase that also don't want to play on whatever super niche server is the next flavor of the week. The beauty of EMU is that you could play the game YOU want to play if you had access to the tools.

Like Debuff said above, there's no global repository of information regarding the EMU scene, and that disorganization is the biggest hurdle to people who aren't in the know getting started- in joining, developing, or aiding in the growth of the EMU scene in general. Education is the great equalizer and it's daunting for people who don't have a background in software to want to get involved- its one thing for people to learn syntax and do a couple lines for a quick Lua- it's another to edit a database, create a spell file, etc.
 
I'm not sure if this is on the EMU side or something that can be developed, but when I spun up an EMU server to play around with (one shotting raid mobs is cool for a couple days lol), the thing i missed the absolute most from live was looting. Sure, you can "loot n scoot", but having an advanced looting window makes it so much better.

that and auctioning / selling in commonlands is awful, bazaar would be amazing. But I know that is on the EMU side and not the "client" side.

And, everything Debuff said. Large raid user maintenance is so mundane, separate email addresses, inability to type into a notepad document for login scripting, character creation, etc. For a couple toons, no problem. When you get to 30-40+, it gets real, real old real, real fast.

Active hacks would be nice too instead of having to go to the "other" guy. I know that opens up a can of worms, but i figured all of the administrative of allowing and policing would be on the EMU server itself, not redguides. Aka, i want to spin up a server myself, let me /warp around. Sure, you can with GM commands, but once you give yourself GM abilities, its a small step away from one shotting bosses with a rusty broadsword :)
 
In terms of an actual EMU server, which i know is not the question (but could spin off ideas of what Redguides can do), here are some wishes:
1) 72 toons available to create - Redguides can create some type of automation here potentially
2) Boxing encouraged
3) AFK boxing allowed, but only in private instances (want to level in velks for 4 days straight? create your own instance, bother no one)
4) Both open world targets with normal spawn times, and instances with bosses with normal timers.
5) Advanced looting - Redguides can potentially help here
6) Bazaar of some nature vs auctioning in commonlands - Redguides can potentially help here
7) zones beyond DON (I don't know if this is possible)
8) if no zones beyond DON, then some type of progression past DON
9) Tradeskill automation like live has - Redguides can potentially help here
10) progression is sweet, xxx months on classic, xxx months on kunark, xxx months on velious, etc.

Also, i would like to see a subscription model vs free / donate. Not per toon though, per account. Maybe tier the subscription:

at what point, however, or what level of modification is a EMU server not EQ anymore? I mean, Legends, which is coming out, is not EQ, but it is EQ, but not EQ, confusing right?

That has a seperate subscription model.

I get what you are saying and i agree, just playing devil's advocate.

I'm just super excited to have a fully operational MQ for EMU, full of CWTN plugins, get ready to take my money...again
 
DBG should just monetize the EMU market already and stop being at odds with them. It’s a creators realm… sanction them and even provide shared revenue streams for content creators to make money like all kinds of other platforms do. Make it an unofficial and non supported realm that is given official access with a sub or krono or something so they get a pound of flesh.

Keep branding guidelines separate but they should empower creative use with the IP. It’s a 27 year old game, it wouldn’t hurt anyone and may make them money and give folks the options to reconnect. They should even expose their server code and client access to give creators access instead of having to reverse engineer everything. Or they could host modifiable servers so they stay up and running or partner with someone to do that. There are thousands of EMU players that they can tap into to keep revenue going and embrace ideas.

It could even be a proving ground for testing ideas that eventually roll into official. Make it a symbiotic relationship.
 
i would be super happy to have a simple eqemu light weight server install.
I went through this once and that was clunky error prone and time consuming.

There are 10 expansions between OoW and RoF but there really arent any servers that give a full play experience to these more 'advanced' expansions. Quite a few make use of chosen zones but they are heavily customized (which is fun IMO). I dont know exactly why it is rare to see an emu server run into these later expansions but there is a huge ammount of content here that really isnt being used. Anything we could do to help open these expansions up and make them easier for the emu community to use would be great.

There's a couple of factors keeping EMU servers stuck at OoW.
 
server operators add stuff beyond it all the time... its just not all in one place. that relies on community effort... if "we" are stuck, its because of "our" choices.

This is gonna be a hot take. Sorry if it's hurtful to anyone.

Demonetization

The fee-based community has always seemed a little odd to me (and even at odds with the nature of the open-source, no cost MQ), but I certainly understood and respected it.... perhaps it was/is even necessary for survival of the live-centric community, as a basic weed-out element. Besides, we all know how laughably easy it is to maintain with redcents, even as someone mostly simply leeching off of the community. I'm very thankful for the options that we have. I'm also appreciative that websites like this have costs in time, effort, and cash.

To boot, Live EQ is already based around monetary transactions and p2w/convenience items (heroics, etc); even RMT is normalized (via Krono). The practice is well-accepted, and even expected. That mindset has carried over onto the MQ side of things, and I accept that.

IMO, that changes as soon as you reach into the EMU scene. In my mind, EMU is for enthusiasts, rather than business interests.

Sure, there have been some servers or people that have sought profit; and long before the likes of THJ (THF, etc), but that is by far not the norm, or maybe, it is not the norm in the places I frequent. Even server "donations" that exist are generally very humble and 100% optional. I've thrown cash here and there at MQ devs and server-operators alike as a show of genuine appreciation.

Right now I feel that there are people seeing a push into the emu side, and seeing a chance to profit off of it. Right now, I feel that there are people looking at the opportunity for a newer emu client and seeing dollars signs. I don't like that thought at all.

I'm not sure that I want to be part of something that pushes monetization into the EMU space... subscriptions, maybe I can stomach, especially if a live element still exists in this new "emu-first community". Paid resources? Probably not.

I totally respect that others assuredly will not feel the same way, but ask, and ye shall receive.
