thank you sic, so question, last month i updated a renew subscription to the cwtn plugings i think i updated 6+ (estimated) so i am assuming those wont work come april?

Unless folks previously mentioned or other folks are able to do the work, that is unfortunately correct
How much would it cost to hire someone to do it on a monthly basis, any guesstimates?

I would donate a good chunk towards keeping things going. No plans to play on Emu and would probably quit rather than go without MQ2.

Well this is certainly one way to be rid of me. Im sure sic will appreciate less annoying questions. RG going away from live will kill my entire guild/server.

I've been around long enough to have heard (and seen) alot of bad/negative stuff about emu's. I'll hard pass, this is essentially a ban wave that's hitting hard.

I think what tastes the worst is that there's no warning. Just next patch, good game. no transition period, nothing. While i'll always be appreciative of everything thats been done for it, it kept me able to play EQ for some time, really don't like that.

Are there any tools that help with monthly patches?

I have a bunch of new heroic characters that would be going to waste without MQ.

bummer. got paid today and hopped on and straight to buy another cwtn plugin then saw it this after the purchase. what a waste. super unfortunate

Boxbuddy and I are willing to help.

I'm willing to pay the current MQ dev team to help transition / teach us so we aren't going through hundreds of burner accounts trying to re-invent the wheel.

Well this is sad news, but it is also very understandable. Patching must have been getting close to a full time job for all of those involved.

I'd like to thank everyone involved for ALL their efforts over the last however many years. Not just to the Hackers that keep us patched...but thanks to the community too - this community has been the best.

I might try an EMU but I fear I might be in the same boat as Trapper and find it a little boring.

same. i've no idea what all is involved but if someone can point me to some youtube videos i can obsess over em for a few weeks and maybe be able to help some?

I support this choice 100%. It has been too long since I was active on EMU. I will need to set that up again at some point. See you all on the flip side.

I'm not a computer expert and can't help much, but I like playing EQ and I like playing with MQ2, otherwise I would have quit the game a long time ago, in fact I quit and came back because of you guys. Without MQ, I couldn't play with 6 characters and would have to play solo, which is almost impossible due to scheduling, group availability, etc.
What I do want to say is that I'd like to know if it will be possible to continue using MQ2 in some other way or "somewhere else," something like Project 1999... but with MQ2. If donations are needed, I can help via PayPal. (Could you increase the monthly fee?) Therefore, I would appreciate it if you could publish information about this so I can continue enjoying MQ2 and EverQuest. Thank you, and I hope you find a team of experts to help with the increasingly complicated patches that DaybreakGames is making... Although in my opinion, they will lose many accounts if they block MQ, I hope that doesn't happen. (Apologies for the English translation.)

This might be the "one cool trick" that changes how DPG feels about very vanilla version of MQ if it seriously hurts their subscription base as some here suggest.

If not, well EQ live feels like they are treading water with the THJ lawsuit admission and subsequent Legends announcement. To me the future of the game might be in EMU servers. I love playing EMU and even more so in the past when the CWTN plug-ins worked there so this excites me on that front.

I did see a news program recently where someone was training an AI agent to play a video game by actually playing it, not inserting itself into the code. Perhaps that's the future of having a better merc?!

This is very sad news, but I understand where the devs are coming from.

I've enjoyed my 5 years of EQ since I returned to live, but I really have no interest in EMU that only had content up to OOW. I quit the game originally after OOW, and am not interested in playing EQ only in the 'old world'. Time to move on to other games. Thanks for all the support and help in the last five years everyone! Hasta luego!
Common misconception.

DoN is out there, and many server admins customize the experience and or/content.

It is not the EQ you think it is.
I do of course respect your decision! There are some things you give up. Advanced Loot is the biggest for me.

Wow i didn't expect this to happen so suddenly. I always thought this was going to happen just for the pure reason that this was a bottle neck with the updating of the software, since it was only done by couple of people. I always asked myself the question what happens when those people are gone, then mq is gone. EMU is ok, but i really enjoy the game in the later stages of Everquest. Very sad news indeed.

This will kill off a lot of subs and servers. Will be interesting to see if DB takes a different stance on this after they realize they're losing a lot of money. Also someone earlier made a good point, DB might be crazy enough just to go after EMU servers too.

I can't say I'm sad. Nobody needs to be slaving away at this month after month for years without being able to have time to do things like play.
I think people should look beyond themselves for a second here.

Hope some new faces step up and I hope they have fun doing that.

whats the point in EMU??? nothing special about it, just wondering. why it cant be updated here besides the fact of suspensions?

They will work for live/test if MacroQuest is updated for the April live/test patches, we're in the same boat.

As mentioned we'll also be releasing for emu, and working on enhancements to allow flexibility for custom/special abilities. This part will happen regardless if the community is able to build for live or not.

So far quite a few folks would like to help update for live patches, which is amazing.

Knightly's message said they'll be accepting quality PRs - but sounded like a fork was necessary - I'll get with @Redbot to see options for how RG wants to handle that.

If you're looking to contribute and don't know where to start look at this most recent live/test eqgame and mq updates and get your toolkit to match. If you know what you're doing this can be long and boring tedious work, if you don't know what you're doing it'll be frustrating every time you think you got something and it ends up wrong.

I mostly quit using VVMQ over a year ago after receiving one too many bans. I still play Live using ISBoxer. Playing without MQ is hard, but it's a relative kind of thing. I certainly appreciate all the effort put into this enterprise by everyone over the years.

with the internet, nothing is ever truly gone. With emphasis on EMU...you don't think helping the masses to use the new emphasis will happen? The sky is not falling..enjoy whats left of Live MQ...like what , 15 days possibly to patch day? Something like that.. and soon enough we'll have more news about OUR (all of us MQ/RG people) EMU EQ and of things to come.
would not say the sky is falling... but i would say it was shocking is all. :)

Ok this is solid, im rubbing my eyes while skimming through posts...................I'm really hoping this is April's fool though. :D

So DBG will make a new client MQ cant beat? please someone explain.

As for me, i wont leave RG no matter what, EMU or anything else, i'm game. I'm ready to pay/donate monthly if required. I have experience in running Linux servers/VMs, if that helps the community, im ready for it.

Sounds like they keep making it harder for MQ Devs to make it work after each patch, to the point of it being exhausting, not that it will be impossible to beat.

DBG/DarkPaw has been being difficult with making the code to work with MQ for a long time. Our MQ dev team works on it every patch, we all sit around waiting anxiously for Brainiac, etc.. its taking increasingly difficult and time consuming toll for our wonderful team to do this every single patch, for live and test, and often for patches to fix a patch. They are not on a payroll and its why you see 'Please consider donating to the MQ devs' .

They do it on their own time, it eats from family, life, and as Brainiac said, even eats up so much that he hasn't actually played EQ for some time. The team needs to stop (for Live) but they are going to focus on EMU. Live MQ will not be worked on unless new people step up, so its not dead unless no one stepped up to help fix MQ at patch time. Some people have already begun to discuss helping coding or wanting to help financially to support new dev helpers.

RedGuides will continue, but focus on EMU to follow the work of the MQ team. Chat and Sic making their plugins EMU compatible, and we will learn more soon enough. EMU is both personal server (your computer running it for you) and MMO style to jump on some hosted version to join with many people. Lots of those already exist, and no doubt many more will be popping up soon. Many with different rulesets and playstyles.

RG will be going forward with a pretty cool future after all the dust settles in my opinion. <3

I'm freaking pumped. I quit live/test a long time ago. I tried it about a year ago and hardly recognized eq from when I played on day 1 of EverQuest. Emu takes me back to those days (without the boat rides.) on live everyone is quite, afraid to make a mistake and get banned. On emu everyone uses /ooc to ask for help with usually quick response, because there will be no ban ( unless against server rules.)

For those who don't like emu, try again and try different servers. You may find one you like.

So why not inject Ai into the equation? it cuts the time needed by tons. Qwen 3.5 or Claude or many out there could help like a pro.

The EMU client doesn't required potential days of work to maintain every time there is a patch.... because it is not and does not need to be regularly patched.

You think the MQ team, who are all profesionnals, are not already leveraging it??

Do you really think you are going to replace them with a GPT prompt?

I appreciate the work of those that have kept it running to date. When I think of the total outcome, I’m curious how it ends up. Daybreak has established it will go after EMUs that cost it money, and this will most definitely cost it money.

I’m not an expert coder. Or an expert gamer. But I do have some business sense and have stayed at a Holiday Inn before. When y’all are looking for business model consultancy - let me know.

You’ve taken an outcome that many have expected over time - in pursuit of something even more exciting - and created a divisive approach to your current, subscription-based, incumbent customers.

Instead of communicating expectations over time (and maybe there’s a reason for not sharing…) and then managing through a transformation, you’ve alienated the base that just paid for new subs, or plugins expecting 6-12 months of support.

Bittersweet.

Maybe I’m just in my feels.

I feel ya - I found out basically 36 hours before the announcement went out. Sucks.
I don't think red wants to make promises that he's not able to deliver on - cause RG is at the mercy of the success of the open source MacroQuest - something that RG helped the developers drive MQ into where it is now - open
I *personally* really dont like the abruptness, and I sincerely hope that miracles happen and live MQ continues - if it doesn't and RG isn't a banging thriving place my level of 24/7/365 involvement will absolutely have to be spent elsewhere. I won't have a choice.

Is there going to be refunds for un unusable annual plug in purchases?
This is a tough one. The plugins require macroquest, a redguides's level 2 subscription, everquest etc. we're just providing the plugin and the support and all that goes with that. And we will continue to update/build plugins where macroquest is functional and supported
