I would like to stick to a trio with mercs to kill with xp/aa. I have my mage, a cleric and looking for a third. I do have a leveled up bst/pal/zerk and bard. Which would be my best option?

I love my bard. So not shure how rational my suggestion is. A Bard bard can pull in any situation and is able to adopt to anything needed.
With the bard you have a puller, a slower to some level and CC. On top nice adps and some own dps from his dots.

From the listed chars for me second would be bst ... can pull pretty well, can make most use of pettoys.
Does fill the slower-slot. does deliver nice adps when needed and brings an offtank where needed.

Next would be pala, as a real tank gives you the opportunity to hunt for the luck-augs in the raid-zones.

Zerk would be last, because I prefere to fill the roles priest, tank, puller, cc before I think of improving dps.

It'll probably depends on who you plan to keep as your main (toon you drive)...if you're going to main a Mage...i'd say ranger...it'd be great to autopull and can dps at a distance so pet can tank pretty well...

If the mage and cleric are going to be support chars I'd go war or sk. SK probably compliments mage better due to swarm pets

So I was thinking of paly and driving the paly so I have good tank. But I need slow so I might have to bring in my bst or bard and run 4 man group instead of 3. I think that would be the only way to really give me a good chance of survival.

Hmmm...pallies are great...floor rugs...or...unicorn riding decorations imo. Own two...seriously thinking of rerolling them as Wars or SK's

I personally suggest you use the Paladin, because later on you will want a tank as you get further down the road.

Mage pet can tank, but not as well as a real Tank and you will not want to use "tank mercs" because they just are horrible at higher levels. '

It has been posted many times, Tank/cc/healer is the holy trinity. Real tank (generally sk or war), CC (bard or ench) and healer (cleric or shaman). Generally bard is for melee based groups and ench for caster based. Sk is the usually preferred group tank. Shaman for melee groups also. IMO figure out what class you want to main, then build your group to support.

I'm pretty sure that whichever one you choose the others are going to feel neglected.
You've got six guys there, that makes a group that gets XP for you rather than wasting it on mercs! :D
