Yet another group comp question.

I searched around and in general the consensus is that melee dps will be ahead of caster dps for pretty much every expansion on a TLP life cycle. Generally it seems like monks are considered the kings for a while and then eventually zerkers catch up then overtake them.

I couldn't find anything that talked about the relative dps levels and instead they all focused at just who was highest. My question then, is how much am I giving up by using mages instead? Is it 1 zerker = 3 mages? or is it more of a 80% effective kind of thing?

As an example take the two groups below. I'm trying to compare two groups starting in Luclin and moving forward:
PalShmBrd MnkMnkMnk
EncDruBrd MagMagMag

Any input would be appreciated while we wait for the servers to come back up.

How long are you intending to play? There is a huge gap between casters and melee starting in and around GOD, up until TSS. They don't end up too far behind melee; zerkers dont start well in GOD and take awhile to get good.

The monk DPS group will be dramatically, absurdly, ridiculously better from POP until about TSS. Like double the DPS.

After that, the mage group is fine, monks will probably have a little edge in DPS but caster utility is nice. You might consider using an SK instead of a chanter, mage pets are too dumb for a lot of things you might want to do.

Both groups will be able to clear all group content in all eras so really it's max power/efficiency on one hand and coth+ports on the other.

Casters will be... at MOST 80% of the DPS of a monk, and worst case usually about 50%, and are subject to diminishing returns how fast you are pushing content. Assuming you're on Rizlona, basically means you'll need to make sure your puller has mana checks in before getting back on the field.

Both entirely serviceable; may want to factor in the guild youre with (if with one) and their raiding goals. If you're suspecting you'll get alot of rotting loot on the casters, itll take the edge off. Not alot of monk loot gets given to alts around our neck of the woods whereas were constantly adding in alt casters to pick up loot.

Ultimately, its splitting hairs either way. Nothing wrong with a caster group, can still challenge the same content just at a slightly different pace.

Monks are #1 dps pop through tss then they move down a bit with other melee catching up. Ber from VoA onward are top dps though need more adps for the first few expansions then can stand alone. Rog is good but there burns haven't changed since pop. Play what you like and run with it, in tbm you'll run into a part where having a singular setup will have issues going through progression One model will either go randomly melee immune or spell immune so you have to pick your group as well in that expansion other than that there really isn't much more that counters either one
