With the new tinkered "portable mender", you have 5 minutes to repair items before he despawns. However, if you keep the repair window open he will not despawn and you can keep him up the entire raid or whatever.

Unfortunately, they fixed this with the first patch to fix the patch that patched it in to begin with. lol I always hate patches to fix patches.
