Problem - Bard skill not increasing

I banged out a 52 Bard and needed to skill up the musical side. Used the Songup macro posted by Lorimar. Farrrrrr too many hours and only a slight increase in singing. Twelve hours and singing is 70 while Brass, Percussion, Stringed, and Wind are all at 1. One, uno, the beginning level, the least possible, 1, yes .... less than 2.
Have I done something wrong?
What can I do to fix this?

Have you actually worn any items with instrument mods? If not, this is most likely why.

Buy a full set of defiant gear. The set should have all the instrument skills you need.
