1. The Guild exists to serve it's members not the other way around.
The purpose of a guild is not to gather members and grow to what end?
The purpose of a guild should always be first and foremost to serve it's members.

2. Know Who You Are.
Many Guilds fail because they lack identity.
You need clear direction of some kind.
You can be a hardcore raiding guild or a laidback casual
guild or something in between. But you need some sort of identity
that your members can be proud of frankly.

3. Try To Meet Your Members Needs.
If you can PL do that. Armor, Plat whatever the basic needs
of your members try to take care of them. Buffs are great.

4. Think Twice Before Setting Parameters
Sure everyone would love to have a guild full of elite 125 raiders.
But setting that as a baseline can be foolhardy if you're a new guild.
Try to remember everyone brings something to the guild.
You may be surprised. Whether it's portals, armor, tradeskills.

5. Be A Grown Up.
Family and everything important in real life comes first.
If you can't accept that and embrace that. You shouldn't
be running a guild.

Discord + web cams + friday night beers was a staple in my wow guild. A lot of us don't play wow anymore, but still hop in on fridays on occasion. Getting drunk and killing shit is highly recommended for guild cohesion haha.

On a more serious note, if I might add, be accessible and interactive. Guild leaders/officer crews who are never around, have a poor temperament, or are inaccessible to new members and don't engage with them yields a high turn over rate in my experience.

My Guild makes everyone an officer when they join so they can tag their own crew in. We really don't care about guild rank. It's an Authurian Round Table kind of guild with a Jimmy Buffett kind of chill. Everyone Brings something to the guild. Everyone contributes some help towards their fellow players. You can't mandate that or order that but you can damned well be proud they are a great bunch of people. They are also very social.

There is something really special going on in our little guild. I'm proud to be a part of it.

I asked chatgpt to turn the original post into a haiku, enjoy:

Guilds are for members' care,
Not for mere growth, but to share.
Serve first, is their prayer.

Identity's key,
For a guild's legacy.
Be proud, set it free.

Meet needs, share your gains,
Armor, plat, buffs—ease their pains.
In service, love reigns.

Think twice, set aims wide,
Value all, let none aside.
Surprise on your side.

Real life takes the lead,
Family first, a vital creed.
Grown-ups plant the seed.
