Question - 4 Box set up

I'm thinking of running a 3 or 4 box set up, my initial thoughts are druid (heals and ports) mage (pet tank and dps) and necro (dps) with a cleric merc, and 2 wizzy mercs, if i have the option of a 4th, i'd remove one wizzy merc, and add an actual wizard, or remove the cleric merc and use an actual cleric. I am definitely leaning towards a caster group 3 or 4 box, and am looking for them to be able to do group content up to at least 1 expac prior to current at least. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

imho bards are to easily over looked: make for great pullers and can turn an average group into a great group. I personally 6 box and change out melee dps/caster dps . brd, clr, war (wiz, wiz, wiz) | (rogue, bst, shm). etc..
I'm not to high one necros as typically mobs die so fast in general group content I tend to never really get the necro contributing fully. I don't think I would do a mage + necro though or 2 pet classes if I was limited to just 3 toons.
I would go with clr vs. druid. if you have a wiz, that takes care of ports + dps. Druids are nice and all but you can't beat the clr healing. merc clerics are terrible imo. role a clr and run autocleric mac is 100X better.

I think it depends what you want the group to do...

your current choices don't have much for crowd control (necro only to 103 which is likely to be iffy at best in some CoTF, TDS & TBM zones), if you wanted to set up a team to run through HA's & etc. I'd encourage putting a chanter in the group for the best ability to lock down adds. If you're looking to find out of the way places to set up and grind, the bard may be a better choice as they make up for slightly less effective crowd control with lots of other benefits.

assuming a max level mage pet can tank effectively, Mage,Ench,Dru or Mage,Brd,Dru should both be relatively solid trio's. And if push comes to shove, add a tank to box if the content overpowers the pet.

A real cleric over a cleric merc will be best. I tried building my group with a druid rather than a cleric and the utility just isn't there. Heals are good, but I couldn't always rely on it with named and it took a while to rez everyone. I haven't tried a cleric healing a mage pet as a tank using kiss, but it should work fine. I'd probably build mage, cleric, wiz, and enchanter. Throw in two more wizzy mercs and your mobs will melt.

Here's my thing, i THINK I want the druid to be my main, given that i can see the reasoning behind having an enchanter or bard in group, so with those two slots filled, the other two slots are really up for grabs, so mage cleric would probably be the best route to go for an end group being Druid, Enchanter (or bard) Cleric, and Magician? sub in 2 wizzy mercs as needed

You could probably consider Druid, Enchanter, War/SK, Cleric. Let the Druid Nuke heal so it's really dps and back up heals. Have the Cleric the main healer. A bard is handy with either caster or melee. I used to do Druid as my main also. They are pretty fun when you learn them.

I don't know. I have several group make ups and I tend to have more success with true heal, true tank, true dps classes. If I lost all my toons now, I would roll a warrior, clr, bard, wiz for my 4 slots. But as someone mentioned before it's really situational and what you enjoy playing. If you like druid, play a druid :)

I could not agree more, if I run a 4 box crew, its an SK or War, Real Cleric, Bard or Chanter (I prefer a bard in group content) and a Wiz, there must be a wiz! I get all shakey and nervous if there is not a wiz in every party! Why would anyone not put a wiz in there! I mean really, lets just do wiz wiz wiz cleric and see how far we get! Ok maybe not...

At level 100 a merc pretty much tops out, at 105 content they are sorely lacking in the dps!

Druids are a very capable versatile classes, but do take time to play well and work best if you play a slightly more relaxed game. I have moved them in and out of several different group mixes over the years and always put them back in. They simple add too much to any group mix not have around. What Raz said about wiz, I can't run a group very long without druid, makes my left eye twitch...
