my little brother needs to re-format his computer and the xp disc he has he doesn't have the auth code for it do any of you know how to bypass it?

If he has the disc, just call microsoft and tell them you lost the auth code. They'll hook you up...you'd have to call them anyways to get your auth to work again on a reformat.

There are quite a few tools that will let you get your CD key from the registry. Some of the MS accounts will let you Download iso's of XP too.

Getting your CD key out of the registry is legal it's there in plain text. The tools only guide you to the exact registry value.

What is done to SOE (and sometimes other MQ'ers) is a rules/EULA/ethics issue. Ilegally using copyrighted software is a legal issue. It would really suck to get Microsoft pissed off at the site when that is not the objective of this site.

It is not a good idea to chum the water you swim in just because you haven't seen the sharks...
