700-ish lines.

If you don't like to read long posts, stop now.

I'm not going to proofread this much, as it takes
up too much time.
If I do or say something hilariously wrong or funny,
please do point it out.
If you have anything to say at all,
please do.

See Previous Post)
(probably mis-categorized)

Shadowknight, Druid, Bard

This setup gives me Maksoi's Holy Trinity -
Tank, Priest, Mezzer
...with ports.

A Shadowknight and a Shaman is probably the most fun
I'll have playing any duo.
However, when a third variable is added to any equation,
complexity increases.

I couldn't decide between a shaman and druid.
I leave clerics out for the same reason I don't
pick warriors or paladins. They seem a bit slow and boring.
Not enough versatility or dps in any of these 3 classes,
as they're pure(except for the paladin, a hybrid).

It makes sense I choose a bard as a mezzer over an
enchanter, as I haven't had any experience with
enchanters and I have always loved playing bards.
I've never had to mez or lull anything
up to this point.

Finally, I always knew the Tank would be a shadowknight.

The interesting twist in this is that the bard
will now be my main.
I always thought I'd main a tank, which makes sense.
They're typically in charge.
They stay alive,
everyone stays alive.

I was pulling on my druid(sans mq2) on Test to a
paladin friend of mine,
and it was a very nice experience.
I enjoyed lining the mobs up to come to him.
I didn't have to switch over to a tank to handle
the combat situation. I got to sit back and watch
the undead be shred.

I love the experience of close combat,
but I don't like to be the center of attention.

The bard(main) will pull, command, and handle crowd control.
He will also be in and out of the fray
of combat, taking and dishing dps.

MQ2Notepad
I did get this set up earlier. It seems it might be a
pain to use while I currently don't have
a mouse (my cats ate them).
I'm wondering if there are vim or emac-like shortcuts
to navigate the text? It's mighty cumbersome currently.

That being said, I'm going to give it the
ole college try. I really hate swapping out of game
to edit files.
I'm missing out on too much.

If I have the game running,
it might as well be the center of my attention.
Less context switching is key to my productivity.

Tonight I'm going back to see the Apes in Feerrott
to test this new trio before going to Live.

I should have tried the shd/dru/shm trio on Test as well,
(see previous post)
but I still learned a lot from that experience.
I learned that wasn't the final trio (it never is!).
I learned how to change from Test to Live and back again.
-I needed to install the Live version of KA,
and when going back to Test, reinstall it again.
(Just like patching the live and test version of eqgame).

On Test, I have the Bard at 82, a bit of gear.
The Druid reached 92 today, thanks to
my pally friend aforementioned, with a bit of gear.
My Shadowknight, who is not fully geared, but
more geared than anything else I have, at 95.

Also in the group will be my close friend with some
3 of his toons.

Feerrott

I know this setup will be overkill for the Apes,
but Feerrott is a fantastic spot for testing strategy.

The mobs are high enough that a lowbie will go down quick,
but not so high it's a struggle.

Every heroic character starts here.

Someone once said to me that level 85 is the new level 1.
I have been playing this game for many
years, and everyone has their own experience with the game.
Some play casually, some play too much,
some really care, some really don't.

Level 1 is always where I believe one should start.
My first Heroic(Shadowknight) character,
I had way too many skills, way too much gear,
way too many spells.
I personally had NO idea how to play something that level.
Perhaps this outs me as a casual player,
because before then I never hit 70 on Live (still haven't)
despite playing since Luclin.

Pre-MQ2, I took him to Feerrott. Ran through the
J5 merc quest, and WOW it was nice.
I cut through EVERYTHING like butter.
Button-mashing like a mad lad.

It's right by PoK, not too hard to run through with invis,
and the mobs are relatively
easy to handle (for me, at least) minus the Tae Ew.

Maybe 85 is the new 1?

According to Almar's, I could technically stay in
the House of Thule expansion til 100.

If I get the chance to run 6 or more toons, I will.
For the time being,
my system specs are limited.

1609509300939.png

It Begins

First, I am deleting my combat
KissAssist_ToonName.ini config files
before beginning.
Well, technically first I launch all 3 toons,
which was a mistake because I'm lagging now.

I want to take what I've learned so far and begin anew.

I back up the files by adding _bak before .ini .

Since I don't know if there's a way to do this using
MQ2Notepad, I use Windows Explorer to
visit my MQ2 root folder to find the .ini files.

Instead of waiting for search, I look through
the contents of root and realize they're not there.
They're in the Macros folder under Root.
I annoyingly alt-tab multiple times to check on EQ,
even though I'm sitting in PoK,
slowing things down.

Two things I've realized at this point:
-If I have my text editor/windows explorer on the
right half of my screen, it doesn't interfere with
half of my eq screen. I can see General again!
-I alt+tab too much.

Next, I run the RG Launcher,
ensure MQ2 is updated, set to Test,
and launch MQ2.

Now I invite my very patient characters into a group, with
my Bard as leader.

I mark the Bard as Main Assist and Tank as Main Tank.

I realize my Druid is hugely undergeared for this mission,
but I'll probably start with a Healer merc.
I have some unconverted fear touched armor,
which I will grab soon.

With no target, on each character, I type
/mac kissassist into the console, and
wait for the script to finish.

When I hit my knight, I'm immediately distracted by general.
I turn it off -- again.

This is when I begin to edit the .ini files.

I'm going to attempt to do this with MQ2Notepad.

First, I type /notepad dir,
and I realize again it's the Macros folder.

I type /notepad KissAssist_Toon.ini and nothing happens.
I try it without the extension, and I get a bright
red error message. This is helpful because I can see
clearly what I wrote in.
It's not helpful the file doesn't open, and I don't see
any output.

I consider trying to type something like:
/notepad open file.ini, but I decide to consult the
MQ2Notepad manual instead.

My characters wait patiently again.

I visit the GitLab repo,
from my browsing history
and realize there's no Readme.md

My computer is lagging like crazy at this point.
I have VSCode(Where I'm taking notes), a single Chrome tab,
and 3 eqgame.exe's running.

I struggle with MQ2Notepad for about 20 minutes,
then give up and go back to opening the configs in VSCode.

At least now they only take up half my screen!

I promise, I had MQ2Notepad working earlier,
not sure what happened.

I start scanning the ini and realize there's
sooo much there.

Since KA is still running on the bard, I type
/setdps and use his DD gems.

I go back to my ini file because there's so much
to configure still,
and realize the config has indeed changed.
Or, atlesat when I go to save it, there's a merge conflict.

I realize if I write my spells into the file,
at least I'll have auto-completion on some stuff.

I close the file in my editor,
check to make sure /writespells is indeed the right
command, and run it.

I reopen the file and spells aren't there. I try to close
it and there's an error it's busy. Perhaps the
error from before was not a merge conflict but a lock
- I didn't read it.
Need to slow down!!!

I type /setdps 10 11. I type /end.

Resource still locked. Must have been something
I did with MQ2Notepad.

I force Unload MQ2 and Reload it.

And I get a crash error, don't read it, assume I lost a box
again, but luckily I didn't.

I close the config file successfully, and
retarget my tank and /mac kissassist again.

I repeat /writespells and /setdps 10 11, which both appear
to complete successfully.
I open the file once again.

The spells were written but the DPS was not.
No biggie - at least I have auto-complete.

I set LoadSpellSet to 1 because that seems pretty nifty.

Every time I run KissAssist it should load that spell set.

I turn Melee on, DPS on, and fiddle with
a few other settings - including twist.

Otherwise - I'm leaving everything alone for now.

/end.

I decide to do the Knight next because they're pretty much
set up spell-wise from before.

The druid is a mess right now - (very powerlevel).

I target myself on my Knight,
/mac KissAssist ToonName Tank

Before opening the file, I /writespells. 13. Wow!

I extend the MQ2 Console a bit longer, and realize
this is working pretty well. VSCode on the right, MQ2 on
the left with EQ running in the background.

I open the Knight's combat .ini and go to town. This time,
I didn't open the file first, and get screwed up trying
to overwrite stuff.

At this point, context switching again, I go to my
backup files for reference on syntax.

The urge is strong to swap back to the game between
checking for files. This slows down the computer.

The Aggro section held me up last time.

I scan through and copy-paste a few things that I
know are 'right' (maybe).

Tank should be good to go.

I realize I haven't used /end in a while, so I do that.

I scan my other toons to make sure they're all /ended. Still
in PoK.

I hop over to the druid.

Crap.

Today, the druid was PLed, no spells, no gear.
I snagged Fear Touched from baz but haven't done the
combines yet.

I /camp the other two toons, and head to the library to get
spells 85-92.

I realize my bags are almost completely full of stuff
I don't really care about, minus a few things.

I then go to the bank and drop
everything I don't need off.

My inventory is now my food, water, saddle,
and Fellowship Insignia.

Druid's travel light.

I leave the equipment on.

I have 63,391 plat on my druid.

I go to buy spells, and relaize I don't have
room in my inventory because
I forgot to re-up on bags.

I bought 6 spells - down to 59,625.

I'm playing a druid and I have neither SoW, CoC, or Lev up.
Fail.

6 is group cheetah. 7 is forage, which gets removed.
4 is also group cheetah.

You get the idea.

1 2 and 3 are dps nuke AAs. I played this toon before
using MQ2.

I don't remember the last time he was played.

Total time playing, 5 days, 12 hours, 58 minutes.

This session, 2 hours, 21 minutes already!!!
I believe I ended the session after grouping with my
pally friend.

Where does the time go??

MGB gets removed, Origin stays. The druid
is shedding his cruft.

I remove everything I don't completely understand.
Bind, Gate, Lev, Exodus - run into a wall context switching.
Origin, Camo, Lesson, 3 nukes, a snare, CoC, VoI
Tracking gets removed, and finally a horse?
I don't understand VoI at all, but I leave it there because
I think it's a Druid Feign.

Gate to buff my friend. Heck yeah druids!!

Now I get to unmem all my spells!

What a pleasant run. I like to run. PORT!!

Back in Knowledge, I load up on boxes.

When I buff, and when I'm in combat, I do not have lev on.

I always remove Lev unless in
Plane of Knowledge or on a run.

Buying spells: I get from 85-89, then
swap to my bags to mem. Need to fix the UI a bit
to make buying spells easier without a mouse.

I notice I try to jump a lot. Doesn't work with lev.

I also obsessively check my inventory.

I make it back to the Feerrott stone,
where my toons are camped, and look at spells.

I don't see any lvl 90 spells. I forgot them.

I don't really need them for this test.

I have 37,637 plat left. You can do the math.
I don't have much time for math,
despite it's beauty.

I remember I'm missing gear. I need the 92 fear touched
stuff, which is in the bank.

I buy the missing pieces from baz for 1 plat. Thanks Test!!!!

I go to GH through GL, ugh. There's probably a port
to Shard's, but I don't have it yet.

I go re-up my buddies DS and give him the cool wolf spell.

Most buffs around level 45 last 20ish minutes.
The share greater wolf is 6 hours, + atk + super-sow
+ wolves.

It's good to MGB this. Lots of doggies.

I've got my fear touched gear,
I'm a wolf, and now I'm ready to look at the Priest's battle
config.

For non-visibles, I have Paragon's Earrings,
and the rest is a mixture of defiant and drops.

Down to 26,745 plat.
Played:
This sessions: 3 hours 18 minutes

I had my chrome browser running for most of that.
Should have shut that down long ago.

The time:
12/31/2020 11:59 PM

Happy New Year =)

Looking at my Druid's spells, an 83 dot memmed.
I remove them all and put my best guess
as to what should be there.

My spells are loaded.

Druid doesn't have the J5 merc yet.

I pick up a J1 Wizzie. Thanks Test =)

Target him, and type
/mac kissassist
/writespells
/end

Open the (hopefully not already opened) combat ini.

BuffsSize=20

Hmph. There's not 20 gems. There's 13.

I'm not going to sit down mid-combat and remem a spell.
I still think it's a combat ini.

My buddy died, needed buffs again, so I type
/target ToonNameInGroup
/mac kissassist
/memmyspells
/end

It works! Nice! This replaced the lowbie buffs
I had memmed with my combat spellset.

Back to the .ini

Oh no, Gem13=NULL.

That's okay, I'm not 95 yet. I don't have 13 gems.

I have no clue what my healing spells are called.
If I can write a spell list to the ini, why can I not
write buffs, dps, heals, etc?

Q: Can I?

I battle Windows to bring up Notepad,
should have used VSCode, as it's already opened.

Copy the spell list into notepad while I have the ini
on the other side of the screen.

5 is a cure, 1 2 3 6 7 are all Heals of some type.
I do NOT want my tank going down, hence the idea
of two priests.

I'm going to chaincast every heal, like I might see a
merc do.

My tank probably won't fail fighting alone in Feerrott.

THIS IS TEST.

I think I'm finsihed tweaking the config.

12:42 am 1/1/2021

I am logging on the other toons now, who are patiently
camped.

I still have some socials using boxchat(from /bccmd connect)
on the bard, I'm going to skip using those for now.

It's much different to have the bard main than the SK.

I drop all my mercs in favor of wizzies.

The brd had a lovely J1 tank, and the shd had
a healer.

The Shadowknight has the majority of hotkeys at this point.
4 hotbars, the combat abilities window open.

The screen is very messy.

Shift+1, Shift+2, Shift+3, etc. all correspond to pages on
the main hotbar. This is new knowledge for me.

I will use the shift+# keys from now on. There's 10 pages
on each hotbar, that should be plenty.

Only my Bard needs a merc, because my shadowknight has
3 merc slots.

The bard only has J1 access. I'll need to do the J5
quest on both of these.

DS wore off on the buddy,
so I re-upped that.

Now I think I'm ready for my run.

My toons were loaded... I feel bad for leaving
them stand there while I went to buff.

1:07AM

Feerrott

Inside PoK, I group camo on my druid.
TODO: Add this to the hotbar on my bard using boxchat.

Cast Selos from the bard, send the druid in to scout.
Druids travel light.

I see one other person in the zone. Probably doing J5.

I'm going to scout the Undead camp referenced on Almar's,
instead of the Apes.

I wonder if my shd has any cool undead passives. I
may decide to load up some undead-specific nukes.

I bind my druid outside camp,
even though it's not much of a run.
There are no distance indicators that
I can see on the map.

Instead of porting back, I run back.

I teleport the group to my bind point.

I set my tank to MT,
I set my bard to MA,
then target my Tank on all 3 toons,
check my tank's role is set to Tank
and type
/mac kissassist
and promptly crash.
Whoops.

I open Task Manager and End Task on the Not Responding
eqgame.exe, and reload my Tank account.

Closing this window now
to maximize resources
and avoid distraction.

Except to re-open it to examin configs.

1:33am

I almost immediately /end on the bard.

The first two pulls went well, though.

For the first 5-6 pulls, I stay out of combat.

No one has seemed to lose much health.
Druid is still 100% mana.

Tank will not return to camp spot.

I type
/mac kissassist
with something other than myself targetted,
I very quickly type
/end
and that seemed to stop the script. Nice!

I type
/camp here
after moving camp.
Slash commands are
ONE WORD!!!!

I should have typed
/camphere

1:55am
Q: What changes from the combat ini persist to MQ2
when KA is not running?

Q: When I go into melee on my bard, why is he
rushing to get behind the enemey?

I drop lev in combat, once again.

I decide to get (ghost) froggy and pull a few extra:
I run in close to a group to gain aggro.
I zip past them so fast they don't seem to notice.
I get close again, this time slower,
and die instantly.

This technique was somewhat effective on the SK. Not so on
the bard.

/end
on the other two toons.

The sk never did their innates.

I can't ever seem to summon a corpse.

I zone the bard back to Knowledge because his corpse
is in a tough spot. Here, my druid could port
to Knowledge and easily get both back to camp,
but for simplicity I'm going to run back to Feerrott.

I know my Druid has a rez AA, I just can't find it.

I could easily go shred the frog-ghosts with the sk
and pick up the corpse, but this is a good lesson learned.

2:05am
Zone into PoK from GL (bard is bound there)

To summon a corpse, the player must be targetable.
Not their corpse.

2:13am:
Bard rezzed. Checked on VoI but still couldn't find
the rez aa.

I port the group out, and am ready for bed.

It's going to be really rough maining the bard in
a zone where the level difference is this great.

The shadowknight SHREDS everything, and the bard is
too squishy.

I still have
'DoCommand - Couldn't parse 'dps 1 2 3'' popping up.

It's going to be really rough maining anyone
with lag this absurd.

This will be the trio I play on Live, though. When they're
all the same level, things will be different again.

Dude..u need a mouse! omg
yeah no kidding.

you can also do /mac pokscribe if you downloaded PoKScribe and it will run to their pok vendors and check for spells.

but yeah playing without a mouse is pretty rough.

you can get a mouse for less than $10. definitely worth it.

Thanks for your feedback!

I ventured to Wally World and bought a wireless mouse for about $20. I know it will be useful.

Everything has a use case.

The sensitivity seems insanely high, and it's smaller than I'm used to, but I'm not going to fiddle with it and just get used to it.
It's wireless/bluetooth, so my cats can't chew through the cable. There's not a cable to chew through!

I'd like to beg the question and ask if a mouse is really necessary? If anything, I'd like to use the mouse less, and I've gotten by mostly just fine using the trackpad on my laptop.
Removing my hand from the keyboard to navigate somewhere with a mouse is simply more cumbersome context switching.

Mouse:
Recommended, but not required (unless you don't have a laptop trackpad... on a desktop computer it is very helpful to have a mouse).
