The DirectX 11 API Port is now on the Test Server. DirectX 11 is included with the required Windows OS versions (see below) so in most cases you will not need to install more software.DirectX 11 is not planned to go to the Live servers in the September update.

Most systems that currently play EverQuest should be able to run DirectX 11. If you have concerns that your system will not run on DirectX 11, please attempt to login to the Test Server during this testing period.Instructions on how to access the Test server can be found HERE.

There are a few goals with this port. For many people, the immediate benefit will be improved graphics performance and stability from modern drivers. Additionally, this allows our game to continue running in non-emulated graphics modes. Major graphics card manufacturers have already started running games for DirectX 9 in emulated modes (and thus introducing another area for potential graphical lag in the future). Eventually,we'll have some new and improved art that takes advantage of the features of DirectX 11 too.

New Minimum Requirements
You will need to ensure your PC meets the new requirements, which are as follows:

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  • OS: Windows 7 SP1 64-bit or newer
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-4771 / AMD Athlon X4 840 or similar CPUs
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti / AMD Radeon HD 7970, hardware feature level 11_1 or greater
  • Network: Broadband Internet Connection
  • Hard Drive: 20 GB of free hard drive space
OPTIMAL RECOMMENDED SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS
  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit or newer
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-9600K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or better
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 / AMD Radeon RX 5700 or better, hardware feature level 11_1 or greater
  • Network: Broadband Internet Connection
  • Hard Drive: 20 GB of free hard drive space
To verify your Operating System and Service Pack, open your Windows Search on your PC and type in MSINFO. You will see "System Information", press that. Within the "System Summary", you will find what OS Name and Version you have.

To verify your DirectX version and your GPU's hardware feature level check DXDIAG. Go to Windows Search on your PC and type in DXDIAG. Click on the Display tab and in the box on the right titled Drivers, you will find your feature level.

Alternatively, you can look up any video card to check for compatibility at: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs. The hardware feature level will look like this, the number in the parenthesis is the feature level that this graphics card supports:

Troubleshooting

If your system meets the minimum specifications, you may need to install updates.

If you're running Windows 7 (without any service packs), you will need to upgrade to Windows 7 SP1:
If you're running Windows 8, you may need to install the DirectX 11.1 optional updates:
Reporting Issues

To report bugs on this port, please post HERE. With each issue, please include as much information as possible. Such as zone, loc's, NPC names, your current graphics settings, screenshots of issues, or anything else that may be helpful for us to try to reproduce the issue internally.

FAQs

Q: What will the DirectX 11 change let you do that can't be done now, or is this just keep the UI working with DX11 with bigger monitors?
A: Some of the DirectX 11 features are tessellation, improvements to occlusion, and access to additional post-processing effects. You can read more about DirectX 11 features here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/direct3d11/direct3d-11-features

Q: I play on a laptop with just onboard Intel graphics chip. Will this make things worse for me to play?
A:If your integrated graphics supports DirectX 11 there should be a performance improvement. There should be a lot of coverage for DirectX 11 and that is part of the reason why DirectX 11 was chosen instead of a newer version (wider hardware support). You can read more about Intel graphics API support here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005524/graphics.html

Q: Will the DirectX 11 require a stand-alone graphics card?
A: Depending on the capabilities of your PCs integrated graphics, DirectX 11 may be supported. Intel HD4200 and higher should support DirectX 11.1.

Q: Will the lag get worse with DirectX 11 on older systems?
A: Most likely not, though some older graphics cards, typically graphics cards older than 10 years, may not support DirectX 11 which would be the main drawback of the upgrade (most havehad updates that added DX11 support). Graphics cards that support both DirectX 9 and DirectX 11 should see a performance improvement.

Q: What are the long-term plans for DirectX 11?
A: The initialreasonto move off DirectX 9 was to help future proof our game which may not be supported natively by modern graphics cards in the next few years. Intel stopped supporting DirectX 9 natively in 2022. DirectX 11 allows us to use newer features (see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/direct3d11/direct3d-11-features) such as tessellation and multithreading. DirectX 11 was chosen vs a newer version to support older hardware and overall be a less disruptive change.

Ancient hardware? According to the minimum system requirements EQ's DX11 port will allow you to run on an OS that the processor doesn't even support. This will allow you to go beyond what you were capable of before! To infinity, on Windows 7!

Hope the memory footprint doesn't increase too much, I can be at 54% usage on my RAM already when I'm running 54 toons. Might have to close chrome or something :xd:

Hmmm, when I try to login to the test server my laptop is working fine, however, my desktop (where I run the bulk of my characters) is getting "Failed to load the graphics DLL!" This is on launchpad, just after hitting the big green "PLAY" button.

I checked dxdiag on both. Both are Direct3D DDI: 12. The laptop goes as high as Feature Levels: 12_1, whereas the desktop (where I'm having the issue) only goes up to 11_1.

I checked windows update and everything is up to date on both.

Is this going to mean that I'll be needing a new video card? Or should I just wait and see if things just need to be sorted out by the developers? I'm in no rush because I'm guessing it'll be "patch day" on test for the better part of a week.

This sucks if you are running some 3770s with integrated graphics.
Looks like you need at least Haswell for DirectX 11_1 support

Time to hit eBay for some ancient low profile GPUs to support those ancient CPUs...

I wonder what would be the cheapest GPU that supports DirectX 11_1?

One candidate is Nvidia GT710 which is a horrible card.

Wonder if the high end 2000 series Xeon's from the x99 platform is on that list. I know those are super popular still.

Those should be fine since those are based on Haswell and later Broadwell. Those support Feature Level 11_1

The key issue is Feature Level 11_1.

I am typing from 3720QM based laptop (DELL Latitude E6530) that also has mobile NVIDIA NVS 5200M. Sadly both only support DirectX Feature Levels 11_0 if dxdiag is right, and it should be.

Windows 10 Pro, 16GB RAM, SSD and currently runs EQ like champ but come patch I could be S_O_L.

There are quite a few graphics cards(integrated or discrete) that only have 11_0 support.

For example looks like GT710 should NOT work with EQ whenever this updates goes live.

The GeForce GT 710 was a graphics card by NVIDIA, launched on March 27th, 2014. Built on the 28 nm process, and based on the GK208B graphics processor, in its GK208-203-B1 variant, the card supports DirectX 12. Even though it supports DirectX 12, the feature level is only 11_0, which can be problematic with newer DirectX 12 titles.

So ive been messing around on Test with this DX11 update. and it is glitchy, colors are off, and different items for interactions with the new and old UI are being weird.

I believe this is going to take some time for them to work out.

I have a pretty good updated system, and i know its not that currently

Quick Question,

Has anyone see CPU/RAM usage go up after the DX11 install?

I went from a 30% load on ram to 78% load. Also went from 20% CPU to 90% CPU usage.

It will depend on your graphics card/driver. There will be cases where the hardware doesn't accelerate a DX11 feature but the driver implements it in software. In that case you will see an increase load on CPU and RAM. This will usually happen for cards created during the transition between these DX versions. Later GPUs will implement more in hardware and less has to be done in software. Sometimes just a driver update happens when they figure out how to implement or optimize a feature for the GPU. In short just because a hardware/driver set complies with DirectX 11_0 or 11_1 it doesn't mean it does so efficiently.

True but loading more than 30 Chars, it gets really buggy now :(
