I never said I wanted live to die.
He was talking about paying devs (and MQ sub models maybe?)
I sure as fuck hope that doesn't become a thing.

Edit: so yes, what you said :)

The problem is the amount of work it requires. Anyone doing it as a hobby etc will get burned out it becomes a 2nd job that doesnt pay and in todays world you cant spend that much time on a hobby that feels like a job that doesnt pay you.

i've had some really awesome conversations with folks over the past week or so. brain, knightly, etc stepping back might be one of the better things to happen to macroquest in the spirit of open source collaborative projects

hear me out.

there's been a flood of talented folks show their workflow/toolkits, show their private projects that demonstrate a really clear understanding of mq, eq, and REing eq into mq - hopefully this situation results in more folks realizing it is a space they can contribute to.
and then we end up with a talented mq developer pool that isn't just 1 dude doing the updates (who would probably rather be doing features).

tuesday and then next wednesday are going to be nail biters for me personally - but i'm feeling pretty good

What i was speaking to is what Sic was mentioning. If we have a choice, i can consistently pay more if the opposing choice is no MQ and hence no EQ for me. I will not pay the amount of $ I've seen outside RG for an open copy...As with everyone here, I love this game and this and other communities like it make this game fun. If it means a little bit more per month, I am down.

Can i say "Good News"? or just wishful thinking?
Sic all eyes on you, do something :)

In the mean time, how would this affect ECTunnel and PlayersAuction and the likes?! 🤔

So let me understand this, as i am just back to playign EQ and Useng MQ,

MQ2 is not going to be activey updated for EQ live after April? is this correct?

Are there EMU servers that go up to the latest content? if not how far up do they go? if only up to omens, whats the point?
?

Claude doesn’t make you into a talented developer.

claude does not make you suddenly good at reverse engineering. And what happens when Anthropic decides to butcher the quality or jack up the prices out of reach like they’ve already started doing?

Well I don't expect AI/llm to magically solve problems - you know my feelings on ai/llm more specifically than most folks do.

I've spoken to some folks who purport they have real world RE experience, and I'm hoping some of those folks come through, with the things they say they can.

Unfortunately there is a line of "baffling with bullshit" and "bewilder with brilliance" that I don't understand enough to be able to say 1 way or the other - which is why I always ask you random questions.

I'm not holding my breath for me or me equivalents to magically figure it out over night - despite staring at ghidra exports or ida as if that might help - and for clarity I haven't asked AI anything about it - I don't know enough to know if the information it was telling me was nonsense.

One of the oft repeated criticisms about mule was that it was beholden to 1 person, and now we're in a situation where the community is without (justifiable reason obviously). You were there to do it, hopefully someone else who *does* have the real world experience and skills comes through.

And yeah, anthropic. Yikes.

I expect AI/llm to bubbleburst and stop being publicly available (either prohibitively expensive or just only private). So yeah, all eggs in claudes basket is a bad idea too.

Hopefully the Clarion call for contributions and support will be answered.

it does not make you better or understand how to do RE. But and hear me out...could it help?

to be fair and honest I have not even looked at any kind of AI. but maybe?

Sic it's 2026........pin this post and i'll see ya in 5 years and how your perspective about Ai coding would be.
This reminds me of old times when programmers didn't like the idea of importing libraries "heck No, i make my own libraries!" I don't dwell in RG politics but i remember when there was some gossip about "mule" being the only dev behind MQ, but i stand corrected.

I second what Teichou said, MQ is a phoenix, it will always rise from the ashes by the power of its own community. The way i see it? EQ can Die, but MQ shall PREVAIL within.

You also don't know my perspective of "ai".

Using tools as properly is important.

Do a Google search for something like "loosen lugnuts with shotgun". Was a guy some years ago who had lugnuts that were too tight, and for some reason he figures a shotgun would loosen them. Wrong tool for the job, regardless of experience with shotguns or lugnuts.

My point is a lot of folks think when they get an upbeat affirmative response from an LLM that is designed to do that, it has all the answers. This is "a lot of folks" not all folks. I also know many folks who use LLMs in professional capacity that has given positive improvements.

I personally think that it is likely that the ever succulent siren call of money is enough that when these major companies get enough data, they'll shut it all down and make it only available for private/corporate/government usage with a big ticket.

Your response reads like you have no idea what I said - let me clarify - I am hopeful that folks are able to continue mq for live, hopefully using whatever tools and utilities that they know how to use to make it happen, including whatever AI or other tools. "Ai slop" = slop. Not all "ai" is ai slop.

I am reminded of a saying back in the Fortran V days, “Garbage in equals garbage out. “ in my humble opinion, an algorithm is only as good as the source information, and the amount of quality information, from which it draws its conclusion. Just like in statistics, if the sample size is not large enough, it is difficult to draw any relevant inferences.

Like Sic and others have repeated continually over the past few days, let’s give this some time and see how things shake out before declaring an emergency. I was taught years ago that the biggest cause of stress was trying to control a situation over which you have no direct control.

Be well and Happy Easter to all that celebrate.

Personally I am very excited for this change, as I have not played live in some time and just been on emu. I can't wait for the CWTN plugins to be available for emu. (Have already been patiently waiting.) As stated in the other thred about CWTN and Emu, will the prices remain the same or change? Is there a estimated release date for any of them yet?

There is no information that hasn't been shared.

Im staying optimistic that live gets supported. MQ has changed EQ for me and I won't be playing if its not supported on live. I have done the EMU/Custom content servers and came to live a couple years ago and really like it. I dont plan on going back EMUs as I have plenty of new stuff to explore on live.

I find this whole thread very strange. The title is "RedGuides is working to become an emu-first community, and we want you to play emu too" I would have hoped to hear/see/discuss new Emu ideas. Unfortunately, the entire thread has been hijacked with how to keep things running on Live (which I want to see as well) and the fight over whether or not ChatGPT can detect your colon cancer if you take pictures of your turds...

Just wish there could have been two threads.

That isn't an unfair criticism. I appreciate you taking the time to bring it up. you and I have talked about this a bit in private, and i've shared with you some of my personal opinions.

Unfortunately, there's not much information at the moment - for any part of the announcement.

when RG has more details on the updates/functions/features for emu - we'll definitely make posts/announcements. It'll probably be a few weeks before there is a concrete actionable plan for the whirlwind we find ourselves in.

We know there could be better stuff for things like:
- redfetch flexibility for multiple server installs
- cwtn plugins (like has been asked a bunch)
- kiss updates
- Updated setup guides and scripts to make your EverQuest RoF2 Client (or whatever version the emu community gets up to) run on emu with a click.
- guides/support?/redfetch? to help you install/run a local emu

lots of that stuff needs to be fleshed out, planed/created/tested/released. unfortunately it doesn't all happen over a weekend - especially when there is looming uncertainty about the future.

even if live/test gets updated and we continue being able to deliver Very Vanilla for those servers, we *still* plan on making enhancements, additions, and more functionality for EMU.

RedGuides hates how DBG treats eq players these days and we think that we all deserve better - we think emu can be that place for folks who are tired of being treated like shit.

in our opinion continuing live/test gives *more* opportunity to help EMU be a stronger place, where even people who focus on live, still go and play.

I think Chat GPT with turd pictures might do better than putting your turds in a box and mailing it off to some mystery lab .... and yea im hoping this leads to more attention for EMU also lol

This sucks. Almost every player i know boxes. EQ has long lost its grouping community. Guilds are overly demanding and not for Your average Players or Newcomers. Boxing as become the only reason EQ is Fun at all. A lot of People will quit playing. Memberships will drop. Most People i know have already canceled their accounts before the monthly fees hit.

That's not a bad idea. Perhaps make one in the emu forum!

I've been busy with a redfetch refactor, but I just finished so I can finally focus on some emu features

Just putting this out there as an idea. If there was a subscription option to pay more than the $10/month where the extra goes towards supporting the dev person/team working on MQ I would be happy to select that option.

There are a couple of EMU servers that happily allow MQ, why/how does RG think their server will be any different. I honestly don’t believe it’s going to be as popular as they think.

Has the THJ drama not taught us anything? So I have 3 ideas..
1. The RG Emu server isn’t going to be massively successful and doesn’t warrant Darkpaws attention and RG are counting on this.
2. RG has had some kind of communication with Darkpaw.
3. RG saw what THJ brought in and wants to give it a try. Hoping for an official EQ/MQ server in the future like EQL

Personally with Frostreaver coming in soon with truebox removed I think MQ would have dominated that server with nearly most using it. It just seems odd to me when a server like that is on the horizon and a massive cash cow to RG they pull the plug so to speak???

Did you actually read the thread? Pretty insane takes.
1) There is not going to be a RG emu server.
2) People have been warned against tinfoil conspiracies several times.
3) (personal opinion) A new TLP launch completely ruined by mass automation is not a "cash cow" for RG, it is an incredibly hostile act towards Daybreak games and would almost assuredly result in a massive reaction.

Im sorry, but you clearly didn't read anything at all.

I don't speak for Redguides, but this is what I have gathered from reading this thread. Maybe it will help you.
1.) Redguides does not reverse engineer EQ and then update MQ source code. That's done by the MQ devs.
2.) Redguides takes the updated MQ code and compiles all of it for us, and gives us a plug-and-play installer. They do not control whether MQ code is up to date or not.
3.) Redguides never said they are creating their own EMU server.

I realize that my personal background isn't of much interest, so I include a brief mention because it is relevant to something I've complained about repeatedly on DB forums. I am a retired business owner. I was a franchisee for a major retailer. Overlapping this period, I owned another small business directly, and I've been an active investor since before the Internet. Now, one thing that always mystified me was how reluctant and seemingly arbitrarily hostile DB has been to monetizing the game (monetizing is business-speak for trying to make money from every legitimate aspect of your business that your clients might want). I made numerous suggestions on how to do it, to which one of those was to openly support automation software and those using it. As we all know, no one was listening nor cared. Personally, I have had the impression for some time that the staff at DB are employed more for their politics and opinions than for their ability to manage their product mix. When you have a dwindling customer base for products that are very niche - like EQ - rule number one is accommodate your existing customers as much as possible. Yet DB seems to hold us in special contempt.

I'll be staying put until I'm forced to go to EMU servers. I sincerely love RG and all the contributors and I hope to able to continue using MQ on Live. But you know, those days may be numbered. Unfortunately, I'm a techno-tard so I cannot help with things, which is a bad feeling. All the best to both the MQ team and to Sic and RG team.

Everyone should cancel everything and respond to the email you get asking you to fill out a survey. If they lose enough business, maybe they'll finally give the okay to have mq-approved servers where the patches aren't made intentionally hard to do. I know it's not what Sic wanted in the past, but to me it would be great. I re-open all 12 of my accounts quick, fast, and in a hurry.
No, what DBG will do is ban those accounts that give MQ as the reason for the cancellation of the subscription. I would highly advise against doing that. They will never give an approval for MQ. Also, as a player, playing with a spectre of a potential ban hanging over you all the time is just crap and let's face it, no-one likes that.

For us mouth breathers who have no idea what kind of time sink fixing eq after each patch is, how many hours does it generally take? I know it’s going to be vastly different for people of different skill levels, but I feel like knowing a ballpark number that these guys are dedicating from their busy lives could make everyone appreciate them before they’re gone.
Depends on how much stuff changed in the patch. Back when it was a lot easier and I did it for another unnamed site, sometimes it took as long as it took to compile the client or sometimes several days. Think when LDON originally came out it was the longest it took us at nearly two weeks that time.

Regardless. It's much more difficult now and these guys doing it way better at it than I ever was, and as much work as they've been putting in for very little changes able to be seen IN GAME I 100% agree they're probably mostly patching just to screw with MQers. Also I've never had an account banned before and I've been using MQ2+ basically since it existed and I've been banned twice in the last couple months. I'd already cancelled my EQ subs on all accounts but one before RG made the decision.

Not playing their new TLP that'll require a separate sub probably either. Can't see any other reason for them to make it a whole different client.
