Honestly, been playing less and less each expansion for at least a decade now in any case. This might just be the push out the door for me. I don't even feel anything about it, which is a clear indicator of how lackluster the game has become over all. I do it mostly out of habit these days probably. I'll give it a few months, then see if it is worthwhile to play catch up when the next expansion drops and decide if I want to bother with it ever again at that point. I had a thought that maybe only grabbing every other expansion might rekindle some interest so was going that route, until current events at least. Good luck all.
Most users don’t realize what it takes to keep MQ running. It’s not always simple—sometimes it is, and that’s fine—but when a patch like the last one hits, it can really cause problems. Fixing just one issue can take hours. What many don’t understand, since they’re not “in the know,” is that the devs aren’t wealthy. They likely have jobs outside of MQ and families to care for. Maintaining MQ can take so much time away from life that it hardly feels worth it in the long run. They’ve made it clear it’s not about the money, and I believe that, but life is life, and they’re burned out from constantly battling the EQ devs to keep this going. I can’t blame them, but I also won’t give up on MQ and Live.

For security and privacy concerns, is there a plan to sunset the current service for those not interested in EMU servers?
I'm not sure what that means, but until there is no more live/test for 100%, we're going to try and continue to have those things.
Cwtn and I put our licenses on hold until we have a better idea of what things look like going forward
This isn't the first time there has been a major developer shift - however as far as I know this is certainly the most impactful.

Hey everyone! I have just finished rereading all the posts. Think I will through my 2 redcents into the pot.
1. I have liked this community and its folks. I see no reason to stop my subscribtion to RG. Even though sometime me and the higher ups don't see eye to eye on some things, but they and most of the rest of this community have always answered my question with truth, knowledge, and quick responses. So why would I just up and dump these great folks. I will support RG as long as it is here.
2. (Got to have a 2 if you have a 1) As it was stated, RG and MQ2 are to seperate animals. I can only wish and hope that the Dev team after a well deserved break may want to have another go. Its up to them.
3. I have never been asked since I have been involved with RG or MQ2 to pay anything. Every payment I have given (look at the word Given) I have done with no expectation of a refund. The Dev's take there time to make sure that all the stuff works so we can enjoy playing. As the saying goes, Time is Money. and they don't ask for any.
4. I am still undecided on going to an EMU or staying on Live. I will wait for a few months and follow the discussions and see what happens. I agree with CWTN and SIC to wait and see what happens. I suggest that we all take a big deep breath and wait.

hopefully the future includes both expanded and extended emu involvement, accessibility, and enjoyment *and* live/test, but make no mistake - the dbg/eq/mq landscape is very different in 2026 than it was in 2019

I know I'm in the new guy here. @Sic I know you've just started to see my flood of questions come through. Not just MQ but the plugins you have made CWTN really are the sauce that made EQ fun again. (Damn those ini files!)
I will say this - I have faith the community will figure it out. My RG sub was active for many many years unused and I'm not going to cancel it now.
In all the discourse here I have seen one topic overlooked: Trust. I've seen you explain in many threads "do not run this software as an admin." For great reasons.
For me - I know MQ and RG are separate entities. But not to me really. Because I don't think I'll even download any forks that comes out of this that don't get Sic and @ChatWithThisName personal approval. That right there means a lot for me.
RG provides an immense amount of oversight and mitigation in regards to keep this software something I'm willing to keep installed in my computer. The everquest MQ audience isn't "huge" and likely isn't a massive target for bad actors. But the nature of this software exposes risk - Risk I haven't even thought once about the entire time I've used it thanks to RG.
So - Thank you.
I hate this turn of events, but I'll stay subbed and throw in a few donations where I can if we can get this thing moving again. For me, it's an RG fork or bust =)
I'll be in the background cheering you on and praying you land on your feet in all this.

I don't understand how EMU servers help any. So the EQ population is gonna move to individual servers run by anyone. Like some dude who wants to run an EQ server for him and his 3 buddies to do raids in Scars of Velious or something? Why would you leave the live servers for that fragmented existence? Please correct me on all this because all I see is the majority of the EQ population losing a major component of current day EQ. CWTN class plugins are huge QoL issue for allot of folks. There has to be a way through this.

There is no clear and present way from where we are (no live maintenance) to where we want to be (live maintenance.)
One way of looking at all of this though is that the reason we know who Brainiac is is because he's the one who stepped up last time this happened. Expect a very long patch day downtime. We may even be out for a few months. It's hard to say.
I, too, am in the "EMU just doesn't do it for me." I don't ever sell my Krono, I just stack it up to pay for accounts, but having that juxtaposition to palpable real world value matters to the experience for me. Like my warrior on Fang has a few hundred real-world dollars in his pocket to throw around. That's neat. Losing that on EMU ruins it for me. But for some, EMU can be an itch scratcher.

Im a bit interested if you need someone, im willing to take up the training its seems like something id work on

That's not a thing. No one is going to "train" someone.
If that was the case me and chat and a bunch of others would be doing it ourselves
I mean thats not true at all. Brain didnt "step up" last time this happened. Brain created this entire version of MQ to bring it back to open source instead of the closed source mq2 that was being provided. This is, in fact the first time this version of MQ has had to try and find a new set of devs. Thats why there is so much uncertainty.

If this is in regards to my post, I wasnt trying to bring old stuff up. Just pointing out that Brain,Knightly, and dannuic created this version of MQ, and because of that they know all there is to know about it. big shoes to fill which is why we have uncertainty. thats all! In any regard, im expecting there may be some downtime, but I think the collaborative minds working the issue will find a path forward, just have to keep patience (as hard as that is for some)

I dont think EMU servers technically make money, they are more fan/passion projects. When they start making money (THJ for example) thats when you start getting into legal territory. There are plenty of emu servers out there that im sure RG will have support for, as long as the EMU server is MQ friendly and accepting of the support.
EMU servers just need enough donations to cover hosting costs. Everyone else volunteers their time and talents to make the server awesome. If the server starts turning a profit, DBG notices.
The guys who write compelling stories and code instances/raids/quests for us to experience or research and fix bugs are doing so out of the goodness of their heart for that server's community.

This is the push I need to stop playing on test. It's going to be very interesting though to see how this all plays out in the near future.

Have you played EMU? Some of these servers are a great experience - stable, populated, lively... folks grouping and raiding together. Its older content with a twist but it's not a dude stringing together a shabby experience for his 2 buddies to do velious. Give it a try.
I'm at Ascendant ascendanteq.com and MQ is fine as long as there is no unattended gameplay. Much more polished I think than what you are describing.

An iPod from 2005 can run it, small exaggeration but not by far. I'm being cheeky in my anser, if you want one only for you locally, practically anything you have will run it. If you want one for a few friends or for 50+ then maybe a little more horsepower. I only mention this because when talking of EMU, there is also your own personal and an MMO type. Same software though. I get a feeling we will be having a lot more guides about this kinda thing soon. so you can tell me 'Dude, Red I made Froggy world, come over you can play as a Frog during OG period. or something. Our EQ universe is about to expand. Not just EMU either, that part is hope until we have more word.

I love the community and everything that goes into it. However I did cancel all of my EQ subs. Now, that does not mean that I can no longer play, it just means that I am using my hard earned money to tell DBG that they need to change. I'm sure that no one at DBG cares if they looses 1k a year. That's not even a drop in the bucket. But if enough of us cancel our subs, the lost revenue can't be overlooked by DBG. No mater how much DBG hates MQ and the community, I have to think that they hate the loss of money even more. Just maybe we can force a change.
at least as of now i plan on continuing to update myseq offsets like i've been doing
this is 100% true.
and if mq isn't running (and injected) eq can see that you're running myseq
i haven't used myseq in a while - but if i was using it i would also 100% put it in my macroquest directory /voodoo
