I discovered that the level 95 mage damage shield, Famished Flames can be cast on a level 1 toon as long as you put them in the group.
Put the lowbie in the group cast Famished flames on them disband then use throw stone or something that will do at least 1 point of damage.
The DS doesn't last long but gives a nice damage shield. every 10 times you get hit the power of the damage shield increases, if i remember right the final level hits for around 600-ish. Hope it helps.
