Question - just curious, why does my mage pet look like a wolf

title says it all, running two mages and one pet looks like normal water and other like wolf

shm, bst, rng, druids all get combat buffs that change looks. might be blocked, or that pet died, since it was cast

form of the great wolf and group pact of the wolf are both blocked, most odd

What are your pets set to? Summon highest? If so, one may be using monster summoning instead of one of the elemental pets.

probably a dumb ass question but is the monster pet better than the water pet?

nope, but the monster pet is usually be used, to regain mana. Chaincasting monster pet and reclaiming it result in a higher mana-level after each cylce, once the AA's "Conjurer's Efficiency" are bought. This is a fast way to get mana back, if you don't want to wait the 2 minutes to med mana.
You can find a macro named MM.mac which does this until mana is above 90% or alike.

You can type '/pet report health' into the chat box to get a list of the pet's active buffs. See if any of those buffs look like the culprit.
