New to MQ as of yesterday, so I am still learning how to set it up without paid plugins.

Does MQ modify or have the ability to modify the behavior of in game Mercenaries or only modify the behavior of player characters.

no, nothing can modify the behavior of in-game mercs

think of MQ/RG more like "automate stuff you can normally do" or "add quality of life to things that require multiple steps/annoyances but still possible manually"

Welcome Telstar!

So, EQ on a budget is completely understandable in today's Economy.
If it hasn't already been suggested check out the Test server for EQ. You get Gold Status for Free and Double exp. So, your free (as in it's free) to run a six box and put away those Coin chugging goof ball mercs.

But if it's live you must go, RG still has your back with Kissassist and RG Merc's both are absolutely free and either will serve from 1 to 120.

RGmercs is an out of the box experience. Nothing to fiddle with... Just run and go go go. However, some folks chafe under the constraints of no easy modification.
Kissassist has an expansive library of pre-made .ini files that should have you covered for any class 1-120 but you also have the option of tweaking it too your specific needs.

If you insist on running Merc's I'd also take a moment to check out this link.

There is a lot of stuff to go thru when you start and there are tons of it free so long as you maintain your level 2.

Once you are level 2 then you can give other posts some Red Cents and it does not come off yours and you earn a couple by doing that. Others can give you Red Cents if you make useful or informative or sometimes just funny posts. This way you can keep your level 2. It only takes 50 red cents a month for level 2 and that is super easy. So you will always have access to those free features!!!

One way to look at it is that MQ can easily activate the levers which EQ provides. But that's the secret, EQ had to have provided those levers in the first place.

So for example, I use a plugin called MQ2React to adjust my merc between Burn and Passive. I like Burn so they will begin to DPS immediately upon engagement. My SK tank generally has no trouble holding aggro.

However, I would frequently have the merc run out to meet a mob that stopped to cast just outside the camp radius of my group. Of course then the merc would get smacked down and KissAssist wouldn't reliably reanimate the merc.

So my solution was to use a react that switched the merc to Passive as every mob died, then switched it back to Burn as the mob finally entered the camp. Here are those reacts...

[CODE lang="yaml" title="DPS Merc Control"]
MercBurn:
action: >-
/multiline ; /stance Burn ; /react enable MercPassive ; /react disable
MercBurn
condition: >-
${Target.Distance} <= 40 && ${Me.CombatState.Equal[COMBAT]} && !${Mercenary.Stance.Equal[Burn]}
&& ${Mercenary.State.Equal[ACTIVE]} && (${Mercenary.Class.Name.Equal[Rogue]}
|| ${Mercenary.Class.Name.Equal[Wizard]})
MercPassive:
action: >-
/multiline ; /stance Passive ; /react enable MercBurn ; /react disable
MercPassive
condition: >-
${Me.XTarget} <= 0 && ${Me.CombatState.NotEqual[COMBAT]} && !${Mercenary.Stance.Equal[Passive]}
&& ${Mercenary.State.Equal[ACTIVE]} && (${Mercenary.Class.Name.Equal[Rogue]}
|| ${Mercenary.Class.Name.Equal[Wizard]})[/CODE]

Wow - Thanks. Much Appreciated

I am so going to have a lot of fun as I learn MQ and the coding aspects of it all.
Retired Programmer....At some point I will for sure learn how to make/code/compile plugins even just for fun...Hello World!

Hi @Telstar ! Welcome to the community!! I bet you'll love EQ in this new way to play. You play as you want, whatever makes you happy, but I want to mention.. there is almost no reason to use EQ mercs with RG use, because you can spin up 3 more FTP accounts to make a full 6 man team. As an example, 3 more FTP guys are WAY better than the EQ mercs. EQ mercs have a few benefits (all out done with RG), such as automatically having spells/tomes/disciplines automatically. But your FTP guys would have loads of spells/abilities EQ mercs don't have, plus totally configurable to fight with the team as you want/need. All based on the ini or automation tools you use. They can carry loot, equip them with drops your mains are not using, bring along a porter or other class that is not currently part of your mains. Mercs can do almost nothing, FTP guys are actual characters. Just giving you some thoughts.. they are FREE..

@Sic is actually wrong @Telstar ...yes it can. It will make you allergic to shitty mercs and have you roll a proper cleric/sham/bard/enc as an alt to heal and/or crowd control and/or beat/stab/shoot shit for your as a proper dps class...

All you need to do is watch the RGMerc util and type /rgstart on whatever used to be a merc on a real account.

Mercs are shit...now roll a real alt to replace it

Hello, Food for thought.
I had made a 4th account before looking at MQ a few days ago to make a Druid (only lvl 7 at the moment) for porting.
As such I wasn't worried about the limits of AA and gear in a FTP.

The idea of 6 boxing rather than 3 mercs I hadn't considered.
My paid accounts I use a mage/shaman and my main is an Enchanter all 120 NOS...thinking of using Mage as Puller/Tank
Leveling toons has always been my bane(grinding)....3 more toons to level hmmm scary....

I think I will have to seriously consider this (once I finish setting up my 3 toons to use MQ properly...I did find some Shaman/Mage 120 NOS Kissassist ini files i'm about to try.

1) I didnt find a 120 NOS Enc ini only a TOL...so once I figure out how to redo the ini and start with these 3 toons I am going to figure out which 3 new classes I want to try....

2) Would a FTP Melee class like warrior limited to FTP gear and AA outdo a Merc? (havent played melee)

Thanks very much for everyone's help

Yes, a ftp alt will always do better than a merc. Secret is to keep them in non-prestige shit..and pop a krono and max your aa's. Worry less about the ini's until you've got a viable alt built...just /rgstart on it till it's geared and aa'd properly. Once you're north of 115 w/ max aa's...i'd start worrying about ini's etc.

Till then...make a social

/rgstart
/pause 20
/rg chaseon
/pause 20
/Lua run lerogue (which I would recommend if you're replacing a merc rogue)...

I know...i know...don't run automation on top of automation but it works great! Combines all the convenience of RG Mercs wih the awesomeness or lerogue and I haven't had any issues w/ conflicts. RG mercs controls the bot movement, lerogue takes over for whatever rg mercs lacks.

Enjoy!

When I first started out with MQ, I only started with 2 paid accounts because I thought I would still need to alt+tab quite often to do certain things. After getting the hang of things I quickly rolled 4 more toons and dumped the mercs.

While I was playing regularly on LIVE, I would keep my Tank subscribed and would alternate the other classes every other month (for free AAs that you get to keep when they switch to FTP). Just don't rely on them having prestige gear if you plan for them to remain FTP.

First things you want to do is get used to communicating/controlling the bots with your driver. How to move as a group, how to get them to start their macros/pause their macros. Setup AutoGroup, AutoAccept, AutoLogin, and pick your Loot tool (I recommend looking at Lootly).

Then start setting up what you need to do if shit hits the fan while traveling or fighting.

dude it replaces EQ mercenary behavior with customized toon behavior of your choosing basically depending on what resources you run and what toons you box.
