Tip of the Week - EverQuest Chat Channels

Have you ever wanted to create your own chat channel in game? One that only you and your friends can chat in, so you can filter out all the other discussions going on in level, class, or guild chat? Or maybe you thought it would be handy if everyone who loved Boomba's goods had a special place to talk about the delicious, tangy pickles he peddles! No matter the reason or subject matter, it's easy to make custom chat channels, and this little guide will show you how.
EverQuest players can pen or join as many as 10 chat channels above and beyond the pre-created channels. The commands and discussion below only apply to these player-created channels.
Chat System Command List
Note: Chat channel names are not case sensitive. You can use all lowercase letters if that makes it easier. The exception to this rule is creating channels. When you create a channel it will retain the capitalization you use when that name is displayed. But for any other use in the commands below you can use lowercase letter.
Here's a beginners list of some commands available for chat channel use:
/join [channel name]
•Allows you to join the channel or channels listed.
•If the channel does not yet exist it will create the channel and you will be added as a moderator for the channel (see below for moderator commands).
•You may use spaces when assigning a channel name, but when the channel is created those spaces will be removed. So if you type /join boomba fans the channel created will be "boombafans".
•You can use a colon to create passwords when creating channels, for example: /join boombafans :pickles creates a channel called "boombafans" with "pickles" as the password.
/join [channel name]:[password], [second channel name]:[password], [third channel name]:[password]
•You can use a comma to create several channels all at once. For example, the above would create three channels, each with a password.
/leave [channel name or #]
• This will remove you from the channel.
• You must specify a channel, either by name or by number, or the command will fail.
/leaveall
•Removes you from all channels
/list
•This command will list all of the channels that you are a member of. For example: Channels: 1=Faydwer(37), 2=NewPlayers(76), 3=boombafans(42), where 1-3 are the channel numbers and 31, 76, and 42 are the number of people in each channel, respectively.
•The channel number is specific to individual users, so two people in the same channel may not have the same channel number for that channel.
/list [channel name]
•Using the command with a [channel name] parameter will list the members of the channel by name.
/[#] or /chat [#]
• Sends the message to the chat channel number listed.
•You can see the numbers assigned to the channels you are a member of by using /list. If no channel number is specified the message will be sent to you first chat channel (whichever is your channel number 1).
/chat invite [character name] [channel name]
•Sends an invitation to the specified character to join the chat channel. If no channel is specified the character will be invited to join your first channel (whichever channel is your channel number 1).
•The invitation arrives as a text message. If the channel is password protected, the invited person can enter the channel only once without a password
/autojoin
•Saves the channels listed and automatically ;sets you to those channels when you log in. This information is saved in your eqclient.ini file in the [Defaults] section as ChannelAutoJoin=.
•You can edit that setting in the file while out of game if you wish
Note for advanced users: /chat and / can be replaced with a semicolon ( ; ).
Cross-Server and Cross-Game Chat Channels
• To join a chat channel on a different EQ server, type [join servername.channelname
• To join a chat channel in SWG, type [join swg.servername.channelname
• To join a chat channel in EQII, type [join eq2.servername.channelname
• To join a chat channel in Matrix, type [join mxo.servername.channelname
• To join a chat channel in Planetside, type [join ps.servername.channelname
• To join a chat channel in Vanguard, type [join vgd.servername.channelname
Across EverQuest servers only, you may even join channels protected with passwords assuming you have the password information. Other titles operate differently or do not use semi-persistent password protected channels. Use the above syntax followed by a colon and then the password.
•For example: [j servername.channelname:password
If a channel is contained within other channels (not unusual for SWG), use:
•[j swg.servername.grandparentchannelname.parentchannelname.channelname
