Hey guys, I'm trying to find a decent computer something that will run wow, EverQuest with ease but since it's a pastime I don't wanna break the bank, looking to spend 250$ or less I'm thinking about the one I attached in the photo, any feedback would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

I am also looking to upgrade for around the same price if anyone can also give feedback.

STAY AWAY from small form factor! Limits your video card options and is almost ALWAYS underpowered for any gaming upgrades!

I have 4 hp200 PCs all i7s and all were under $200 (desktop not small form factor)

I prefer the mid-full sized towers myself, for those reasons. I actually have decent luck refurbishing old cases with new hardware and just build it myself. Most of the proprietary/compatability issues have been worked out over the years, making it a lot easier to build yourself. Just have to pick a MB, and get the stuff that fits to it.

Though Raz, if you are in the market for selling those...

That Dell Tower looks kind of suspicious because dual core intel implies either a real low end chip from last 5 years or even an older Core2Duo chip from late 200Xs.
Yeah it will run a few EQ instances but nothing really current.

That AMD A4 machine you posted first is even worse though, it is a horrible machine..:(

You want 3 things:
  1. CPU speed with at least 4 real Intel Cores from 2011 or later, i5/i7 nothing else (not counting Xeons)
  2. GPU: integrated Intel is ok for EQ, but for better performance start with Nvidia GT730 for around $50, for current games you want at least 750Ti, AMD 360/460, for really awesome full details 1080HD performance on the newest games Nvidia 1060, AMD RX480
  3. RAM: 8GB RAM -> 8 EQ instances, 16GB RAM -> 16 EQ instances

HDD any pretty much will do, if you want to load your games and Windows faster get a 128GB+ SSD (Samsung 850Evo rocks)

For CPUs: use https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ to get a rough idea of how powerful the CPU is, you want at least 5000 score there, you can also check Intel chip features here: http://ark.intel.com/

For GPUs: you can use this handy chart http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html so anything from GT730 up, http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/ is also useful but again very aproximate

What you want is nice 4 solid core i5 or 4core/8thread i7 box.

Solid start here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Compaq-E...-8GB-RAM-1-5TB-HDD-Windows-7-Pro/252531302343
(not sure how good seller is though).

That is a 3rd gen i7, and its speed is actually quite close to current i7s(not much progress in the last 5 years :( ).

You could box 16+ instances of EQ, once you add 8 more GB of ram. As it it that box would be good for 8 instances. 1GB RAM-> 1 EQ instance

If you want to play current games or have high settings in EQ then you would have to add a discrete graphics card like Nvidia 750Ti aprox $100, AMD 460(good luck finding it though).

If you want to play ALL current games at full 1080HD settings then you'd have to get something like Nvidia 1060 or AMD 480 around $200 but again NO need for EQ.

EQ will run ok even with just the integrated Intel Graphics on the 3770.

I personally like SFF machines as long as you do not plan on sticking a bigass Graphics card in them. I am partial to HP 8200/8300 series but they also come in the tower size.

If you can live with more limited graphics upgrade options this here would be a cheaper start:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Compaq-8...2400-3-10GHz-320GH-4GB-Computer-/322263965763

only $100 for 2nd gen I5 with 4GB RAM you could already play EQ on it

+ add 16GB RAM + graphics card and you would have a very nice gaming machine.

EDIT: Found this Shellshocker on Newegg for you: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2PF43C4123 for $209.

That is 3rd gen i5 3470 with 8GB of RAM, very solid for gaming as far as CPU, again for EQ fine as is, for newer games you'd want a low profile GPU something like 750Ti.

Yeah, that is a good deal, that is a 2nd gen i5, just fine for gaming.

Only caveat is that this looks to be a SFF case and the power supply will not support the big graphics cards. Again this is not a big deal just something to keep in mind.

I would suggest getting a 750Ti: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=750ti+video+card
if you want to game the newer games or just get a GT730 if you are on a budget.

You will be able to play EQ without a card, but will have to turn off graphics intensive options.

You can read this thread from 2013 if you want to see what older graphics cards are compatible: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkC...ntre-m91p-7033D54-add-video-card/td-p/1270867

I would buy the graphics card only after you get the computer and open up the case to see what fits and what does not fit.

There is nothing wrong with a Xeon processor, they are normally used for higher end workstations or servers. They don't use normal memory they use ECC memory, but if your not planning on adding any memory, then your good to go.

That is a sweet deal there yamahaman!

You got a computer that is nice already without extra work.

It is basically a i7-2700 (2nd gen Sandy Core)

The graphics card is not super powerful but for most games will be ok. Certainly for EQ . Later you should be able to upgrade should the need arises.

What you can do is get more RAM later, because ECC RAM is actually cheaper than regular RAM on eBay etc even though it costs more new. ECC RAM has an extra chip for parity/error correction so it is actually nice for the bit rot from cosmic rays. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_ray#Effect_on_electronics

Lots of corporations are dumping their old servers/workstations and there are not enough buyers.

The best thing about these corporate computers, is that they are meant to serviced easily and quickly(nice handles for opening case, etc).

Honesty I have been playing eq a lot less, and kinda been working my way to wow but also console gaming, it's more of a just all around computer but I won't be super intense gaming. Is there any specific ecc ram? I'm kinda a noob with everything computer

look for HYPERTHREADING I5 or I7 and actually look up the processor (ie 760 or 3550 ect) and make sure it hyperthreads. This is how you get more "slices" for boxing. And really try to get a mid or full size case so you can pop a decent graphics card in it. 8gb or more ram! most of my boxes are 16-32gb ram

- - - Updated - - -

each instance of eq needs half a gig of ram to be "smooth" but without a decent video card to keep in step your fucked. a great video card and you can get even more toons per gig of ram! My rule is:
8 gb = 1 solid group or 2 not so intense groups
16gb ram = 2 or even 3 groups!
24 gigs + I run whatever I want up to a raid
32gb I have had over 100 toons logged on just to see if I could! but would not want to raid with that, so laggy!

Raz I pulled the trigger on the dell precision T1600, it has a video card installed and a lot better specs then most of the other comps I found, I posted it up above in a picture!

a 2nd gen i5 + 8gb ram can 6box with integrated graphics but if you dont want to use integrated graphics SFF boxes often dont have a big enough psu to run a real video card.

I have done SFF boxes I have a rock solid dell sff quad core/8gb ram that will run 6box until time or eq ends... Snagged a AMD ATI Radeon HD 7570 1GB PCI-E Video Card (ATI-102-C33402-B) Low Profile for around $35 on ebay and it is the most stable single group box I have ever owned! I run 8 on it most days, 1 group plus 2 extra "hunters" out foraging or farming old world drops..... or just plat....

Also dont forget craigslist, can often find a good pc they bought at best buy. I try to avoid small form factor as the psu is usually proprietary and cant support most gaming vid cards. If you dont plan to game newer things then sff business PC are awesome deals as mentioned
