Not exactly, you can download and compile the open-source software MQ2 from source for free.
https://github.com/macroquest/macroquest
If you want the Very Vanilla (Redguides compiled version of MQ), you need level 2, this gets you:
  • Install and updated with a couple of clicks.
  • Updated, compiled and tested whenever EQ is patched - you update your install with a single click.
  • Includes many plugins written by the MQ devs as well as ones maintained by Redguide developers.
  • Access to all the level 2 macros and lua scripts written by the community here.
  • other stuff I cant think of at the moment...

Both are correct. Paying obviouly helps the people behind the scenes with RL income and helps them make everything better for us. Redcenting and posting (to earn RedCents) makes the community better by helping. So yes to both. What you get for level 2 is a TON of resources and tools and actual help from the wonderful community here.

When I first got here there was a link to open vanilla (which included all the redguide community plugins) so you could clone and compile yourself for free, but I'm unable to find it (likely pebkac).

edit: here 'tis https://gitlab.com/redguides/openvanilla
