So, there have been some changes in the political world today. Rummy resigned, Democrats have control of the House of Representatives, and it looks like they're going to have control of the Senate too, at the time of this writing Virginia is still undecided.

What effects do you think this is all going to have? Is it for the better?

(Please, if you don't know what I'm talking about, close your browser.)

I think it is good to have balance in the House, Senate, White house. But I don't like the idea that the house and possibly the Senate will go to the dems. (no offense)

I was upset when I heard that Donald Rumsfield was resigning. He has tried to help this country and keep us on track and keep our troops safe.

Now I am probably one of the very few conservatives on this board here but I think that what we are doing is right. I think that more focus should be put on Afghanistan and finding Bin Laden but the Iraq's have brought Sadaam Hussein to justice and he deserves everything he gets. I believe they could have never done it without us or the help of the other countries that are helping them.

IMHO I still think that there should never have been any "parties" created as all it does is splits up the american mind. You should be voting for the candidate that represents your views and not the party that you are with. With that said, I believe that it is better to have a president from one party and the house/senate of a different party as both will have to compromise in order to get anything done. In this way you are now treading the middle of the road rather than the right or left that you'd get with the same party in congress and the presidency.
As for Saddam, I don't think that we should have went after him in the first place. If you want to have a country free of a ruler, thats all find and dandy, but it is the RESPONSABILITY of the PEOPLE to rise up and denounce a ruler, not another country.
With Bin Laden, personally I didn't really care either way. I know I can be an ass a lot of times, but if you're scared that you might die, you need to take another look at your life. Life is supposed to be about having fun. You shouldn't care if you die if you've had a good life.

Just my opinion on things...

I have to say one thing we should have left Iraq alone. Bush lied to the people about Saddam having weapons of mass destruction. And to top it all off Bush got all of Bin Ladens relatives put them on a plane and sent them out of the U.S. He didnt even question them about Bin Ladens whereabouts.

Perhaps as Bush is now a puppet president, Blair will stop ass-licking and do the job he's supposed to do which is run our country HIMSELF instead of taking direction from some inbred Texan fucktard with the IQ of a pigeon (who's just been hit by a high-speed train).

change ??? lol

- there is still the 2 party system
- rep and dems ALL voted for war ,torture ,patriot act,.....
- the guy replacing rummy is a clone, he was at the heart of iran contra, he is just rummy version 1.1
- the new speaker is as blindly and stupid as most of US in appeasing israel / aipac

in short, nothing changed, but most americans had a small 2 second window of feeling that democratie work in the greatest democrati in the world, what a joke these people are
now they can continue their consumer trip and not feel guilty about 600.000 dead Iraqi's , few 10.000 dead Palestinians, afghans,....

the war loving nation will just continue, dont forget us has been at war ALL the time since ww2 (ww2 who was actually won by russia) but ok, keel living ur dream, america the greatest etc, a fucking joke

Rumsfeld supported torture.

So it is ok for them to get an American soldier and beat him and assualt them and god knows what they do to them but we can't do anything back to them?? You are kidding yourself if you think it doesn't happen. I forget what war it was but they took the american soldiers shoved a piece of Catcus up their ass and then ripped it out. NO I am not making that up. But lets be the good american country and sit there and aske them nicely.

"Do you know where your leader is sir so that we can put him to death."

Yeah I am sure that question will get the response we are looking for.

I beleive Bin Laden's daughter is still in California. I could be wrong on the state but I know she is still here.

Oh yeah and maybe in Clinton had done something about Bin Laden istead of having sex with every female in the white house then 9/11 would never have happened and we wouldn't be at war right now.

I don’t think that there will be any change. People are blind if they think that the politicians are out for the American people anymore. And if they are, they soon get railroaded into the other politician’s views.

The president has never had power. And those that think that the war was all Bush’s idea are ignorant to how government works. Some good does come from government but I personally think that if im giving them 1/3 (after all taxes and fees) of my income I should have better service.

Oh well, It’s the best system we have, and im proud to have the freedoms I have. We really take for granted what we have.

Kind of on a side note,

Do you think bad mouthing, dirt slinging campaigns our hurting the American peoples view of the government?

Do you think you could do the presidents job? (I personally wouldn’t want the headache)

Many people view government as a big conspiracy, wielding power like a colossus to crush the lower class.

I view the government as a huge octopus caught in a mess of red tape. Forget left not knowing what the right hand is doing; our government doesn't know what the other 7 arms are doing.

It's easy for someone powerful and clever to manipulate this system because of its size and weight. Groups of powerful and clever people can make the monster dance a bit to their tune, but it's never completely under their control.

I never said it doesn't happen, I'm just saying I don't support anyone that promotes torture, on either side.

I don't really want to get into my opinions of politics itself, all i really have to say is this year I was fed up with the negative advertisments for everyone.

I had about 27 calls in 1 month for voting, about 8 people knock on my door and try and convert me to vote for XXXX about 4 pieces of "mail" a day.

Someone even went as far as handing me a packet about someone when I was walking out of Stop & Shop, I was like "dude, I'm not even voting age yet" and he responds "well give it to someone who can!"

Republican. Democrat. Doesn't matter. They are all bought and paid for by the same special interest groups. You may change the name of the person in office, but it's the same people paying to get them elected.

A balance of power is good. Someof the best legislation happened when Clinton was in office for 2 years and the republicans swept everything. In a goverment that is split liek this one is, the extreme fringe issues have tobe ignored and the overlapping issues will be addressed. At least, that is how it has worked in the past.

The Democrats have a big issue though. They ran on a platform of changing the war in Iraq. They have 2 years to do that. If not, another Republican will be president in 08.

As far as our policies towards the middle east go.. a large share of the newly elected congress is jewish and at least 1 muslim was elected. Do you really think they are going to be less likely to support Israel?

Worst thing about Democrats is their Socialist agenda. Take everything from the people who work for it and give it to the dregs of society so they can stay home with their 7 welfare babies and not have to do things like.. get a job and support themselves.

Oh well. Same old shit.

edit- And before you jump me on the taxes thing.. I paid 75K in Federal taxes this year so far. I think I pay more than my share.

Don't everyone get too excited about the election. The nonruling party is usually very successful in off-year elections. The funny thing is the Dems put up middle of the road types to run against Republicans. Now if the Dems have really wrestled control of their party from the leftist that have owned the party and the Republicans can wrestle control from the hard core Christian Conservatives then me might just have a government that does look after the needs of the many rather than the extremist few. Don't look for a quick change in the ways things are being run, Dems are extermely sensitive to being perceived as weak and they might just put up a big show to convince everyone and themselves to the contrary.

In response to Fatal's post, yeah I feel your pain, I'm a CPA (tax accountant) and I make a lot of money when Democrats are in office because they love to write complicated and exotic tax laws (something the Republicans are getting experienced at also). Tax simplification......hah....that's a joke! Never gonna happen in our lifetime.

no actually it wouldn't as a flat tax actually hurts the lower income more than it hurts the higher incomes.

How so?

If there were to be a national flat tax, things like national health care and free college would also be possible in such an environment. Of course, the flat tax would have to be in the 50% range for everyone. This would be a boon for the poverty stricken in this country. They would get free healthcare and college , not have to pay for it out of their minimum wage job and be a contributing member to society. Their Taxes paid would go up per pay check, but their net would still be higher. It's the upper class folks who would get hit the hardest in terms of benefit vs contribution. I don't mind that, as long as everyone is contributing at the same rate. Corporations , Billionaires, Minimum wages workers, all doing their part equally. No loopholes. No tax shelters. No tax breaks.

It's unfortunate that the guys making the tax laws are in the bracket(s) that could help make the biggest difference, so there's a conflict of interest.

I wish I could vote for my own salary increases, too.

If I had the inclination, I'd play around with numbers and see what different types of taxes would result in how much of an income for the government. Unfortunately, taxing the average person is the best way to make money because there's gosh darned so many of them.

At this point you are not talking about a flat tax. a flat tax will charge everybody equally no matter how much you make. You say it would be about 50%, ok, so you make 20k a year before taxes, now try supporting yourself on 10k a year when it costs 600-800 per month just for your apartment.... Now look at the rich who are making millions per year, so they lose a few million, but in all reality they still wouldn't lose much depending on their lifestyle.

My point is that a flat tax will hurt the lower classes more than the wealthy. Yes, supposedly everybody is paying about the same, but you're making it so that people who only have a minimum wage job simply cannot live.
