So this is a fully working emu server paused at the RoF expac?

Is it exclusive to specific redguides members only or how does it work? Also I am slightly curious who maintains it and if they plan on maintaining it forever.

I ask because after seeing Asheron's Call shutdown and people scramble to get an emulator up, it occured to me that eventually Daybreak probably will close our doors and EQ already has a known emulator server (P99). The community I think would greatly support an emu like this after the game officially gets shut down. Eventually, in the future, EQ may be an emulator only game, run by fans and an RoF server I *think* is as far as the discs go and that means probably as far as an emulator could go too, unless my knowledge on emulators and how they work is rusty.

Essentially, my point is and what it boils down to, is this emulator or one like it could be where we all end up in the future. Thus, I am interested and willing to get/be invested in a project like it, something that prolongs the future of this game. I would be interested on an FAQ on it of sorts if you're interested in putting one together for the community.

Re: State of the Emu compile

It's the client version rather than server version. For example, you could have the ROF client on a Kunark server.

This is just a MQ2 compile for EQ emulators that run off the RoF client.

Re: State of the Emu compile

I'm even more confused now than I was before!

So, can you even play it?

Re: State of the Emu compile

EQEmu supports a handful of clients. Those being Titanium, SoF, SoD, UF, RoF, and RoF2. This compile works with the RoF2 client, which a lot of servers support. Some servers limit their allowed clients to Titanium (p99 for example) other servers allow all of them (ex. EZ, PEQ, etc)

So you can use this RoF2 compile on any server on EQEmu that allows RoF2.

I see, i see, thanks <3

I'll have to google for a list of servers tonight if i remember. Kinda curious what's out there and I have never really looked into emulators. I did a classic WoW one before but that was it!

Re: State of the Emu compile

You could just fire up the client and you will see the list of servers once u get to server select.
When EQ is shut down, people will use the last released client instead of rof2, they just picked rof2 since it was distributed for a really long time by steam...

Re: State of the Emu compile

I thought that you can only make an emulated server off of a disc or use the content that comes off of a disc. I don't know who told me this but I was told years ago and I am kind of ignorant to the whole emulator thing (I never really messed with them because I was always scared of the plug being pulled at any time and me losing my characters).

IE, Asheron's Call (if) an emulated server is released it will only be done up to the Throne of Destiny X-pac because everything past the throne of destiny was added in by patch.

As for EQ, if the same logic applied, I *think* the last disc release was RoF. I don't know if this is true or not, that an emulator can only go up to the last disc release of a game, but I have heard that same thing from a few different people.

If we get a fully updated EQ once it shuts down, that's awesome ;)

Re: State of the Emu compile

Frankly, I can't wait until someone sets up a EMU where we can MQ2 all day long to our heart's content (hopefully for free). I'd also like a version with GK... as far as I'm concerned that was the most fun/excitement I ever had in EQ.

So, all you really need is a copy of the executable, then the server messaging is built off that. It's just harder to obtain on a wide scale if the executable was from a patcher version, since you can't exactly ask them to patch a client to where you need it to be for you.

Most servers allow limited MQ2 usage (pretty much no active hacks or AFKing), but no GK. Plus GK won't work as well as it did on live since we don't handle the packets in the same way live did. (At least for the nodelay part)

Re: State of the Emu compile

Servers that are currently averaging over 100: p99, EZ, PEQ. I'm sure most people know what p99 is and their anti-MQ2 stance :P I won't mention TAKP since that's the Mac server and no MQ2 there either.

EZ and PEQ both basically follow the same MQ2 rules. No active hacks, no AFKing. EZ is very customized and is basically a new game in EQ's engine with the same zones. PEQ tries to recreate live, currently we're working on OoW. All but DRU 1.5 is in and Anguish isn't yet :(, but they will be soon, hopefully.

There are a couple other servers that have rather interesting custom content, but currently don't have a lot of players. Those being THF, SH, SoD, VA, and Raidaddicts. There is also EQTitan, but they try to be more live like with some customizations to make boxing easier I guess?

I'm heavily biased towards PEQ though :P We are currently trying to make it much more live like, especially with the recent combat revamp that finally allows us to :P

Re: State of the Emu compile

eqtitan wouldnt even ban you for afk.. at least my afk addicted friends are not banned.. eqtitan is very similar to peq but basically total mq2 freedom.. full mq2map etc.. and the eqemu website has a server list to read through.. all emus are nice people.. i think even ez has washed out all its ass hats

Re: State of the Emu compile

EZ does occasionally take action against AFKers but they don't ban typically. Usually the admin goes in and removes items, plat, etc. from your characters to penalize you.

I'm currently working on a few macros to automate some of the duller aspects of progression.

I've suspended someone for a week for AFKing on PEQ.

Re: State of the Emu compile

I was googling to find where I can get the client and I found this page:

http://www.eqemulator.org/forums/showthread.php?t=39158

Hey says to get the client on steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/205710/

Which yea it's there like he said it is. but when you got to the wiki guide he also links too... http://wiki.eqemulator.org/p?Play_Guide:_Getting_Started

Note: Do not download the Rain of Fear client from anyplace other than Steam, or you may get an incompatible version of the client!
The Rain of Fear client is no longer available from Steam.

So I guess my question is, which one is right - is that the right client for me to use or is it not the right client for me to use? Also, if it is, whoever owns that wikipage removed how to setup the client. The "rofmissingfileslist" leads to a dead end page

I got it working, you don't have to replace any files and it does work despite what the wiki said. I chose PEQ since it had the highest population, I am going to run around and do some research to see how far along the server is in progression and stuff.

From the EZServer website:

This is the correct client for all EQEmu servers EXCEPT Project 1999, which requires Titanium. It's also the client that the MQ2 compile here is for.

The one I tried from steam got me to server select but crashed when logging in I am going to restart that computer and try again if not I may pull one from those google drives. I wasn't trying to load it up with mq2 or anything yet, just trying to log in and mess around. I plan to tinker with it some tonight. I hate that the computer I am trying it on is a laptop though, if it gives me a hard time on the laptop I will try to make it run off my external.

AFAIK the version being distributed on Steam right now is not the correct version.

I've suspended someone for a week for AFKing on PEQ.

I was referring to the EZServer, I don't play on PEQ :)

I am assuming in all of the files you linked the one labled RoF2 is the correct one to download?

and P.S thanks a ton for your help, it's saving me time googling around for answers

Yes, the files I linked are the correct ones.

And no problem! The emu servers are a ton of fun to play around with, so I'm happy to help someone start to get into them.

best way to get started on emu is work out what the server you want to play on is configured for. then using the servers website will "usually" have instructions. but torrenting a copy of titanium and rof2 and keeping them clean and copying into a new directory when you want to patch to a new emu.. for example i think the rof2 from ez server has a few ez changes in it im pretty sure

Vile is absolutely right. Pick your server, then your client.

The RoF2 from ez server won't boot on most other servers unless you use the "peq patch". Torrents are the way to go.
