Problem - Issues launching RedGuide in Crossover (1 Viewer)

So I play on a Mac, and my newest one is an M1 computer that I really want to install red guides in. I saw that crossover can be used if it's installed in the same bottle, but I am not getting any thing to happen other than a black console window. It seems to crash around the time it would prompt for "allowed to make changes". Anyone have any thoughts on what to fix?

I’ve managed to get EQ working through crossover (ui skin over wine). I’ve managed to get EQ to run in parallels too.

I will say, EQ on crossover is nice— runs better than my windows machines, especially on m1 Mac

When I try to run MQ on crossover, I get the results above. When I try to run MQ on parallels, it works fine, but I get a DX9 crash of EQ (assuming because of parallels, but going to try a clean parallels VM with win 10 and meant for games today)
 
I had exactly the same results you are getting, never did get either CrossOver or Parallels to work with both EQ and Parallels with an M1 Mac. I ran both for years on an Intel Mac but the DX9 crash prevents it from working with M1 in my testing. I posted here and people tried to help, but it never worked even with clean installs of everything including the OS. Will be interested to see if / how you can sort this out.

Careful! running EQ in a virtual machines is against the rules! :)

In all seriousness, I sometimes run EQ in Parallels on a pre-M1 mac. I've been hesitant about getting an M1 for this exact reason (although I'd love to get one so it doesn't sound like a jet engine taking off when my fans kick in at a coffee shop).

If you ever get it working, please let us know!
 
The only m1 mac I have is for work. The RG side is just how the launcher is handling files and that's an easy fix (for r1p or whoever is maintaining that) but the bigger issue is the DX issue on the m1s. If you can get some diagnostics on that, I can try to look at it -- but hard without an m1 to replicate it. Your best bet is compiling in debug and running it to see what you get.
 
I've been trying to get this to work ever since the m1's came out also using crossover. I had no issues until EQ switched to 64 bit.

You need to install .Net 4.7.2 and Visual C runtime 2015-2019 as well that's why you are getting the immediate crash.
Once you install those the Launcher will run but it will freeze and crash if you click one of the buttons.

In my troubleshooting of the issue is the redguides launcher bombs out because the .Net functionality in Crossover does not work correctly in 64bit. It worked fine in 32bit. I actually reached out to the Crossover Devs about this and they stated they do not support modding software :)

I then tried to just copy my MQ directory directly over and then running but get Software Compatibility Layer error stating registry entries are missing. I tried copying all the relevant registry entries from my PC over into the crossover bottle still get the same error.

I also tried running in parallels. I got the redguides launcher to work then installed DX9 but get an dx9.dll error.

So, there are a few things going on. If the compatibility layer issue could be resolved, it would work. Not sure how to fix the launcher since .net may be the culprit.

So, this is what came up in Parallels, and I attached a zip with the log files and the dump file that came out of it. If I run MQ, everything is fine. If I run EQ, everything is fine. The moment I try to start one or the other while the opposite is running, it immediately dies.

I have both the latest DX, and the DX9 from June 2010 installed. I have .net framework versions all the way up to 4.8 installed. I Did stumble upon the fact that it needed .net framework with one of the tinkerings in crossover, so both parallels and crossover have them installed.

I dont know if it Matters, but here are my specs:
MBP 16inch, 2021.
Chip: Apple M1 Max (CPU 10core, GPU: 32core)
Memory: 64 GB
macOS: Ventura 13.1
HDD: 1TB Flash

Some other fun facts in case they apply:
- Machine used as a development machine when at work
- running docker
- VSCore & other React development tools installed.
- Office installed
- Parallels running Windows 11; setup for .Net Development
- no company installed AV, Security, Monitoring, nor remoting software.

Was thinking about it, and if Redguides needs .net Framework, If someone can point me to the code, I can build and run in my IDE to see what specifically its trying to do when it crashes.
I also tried to copy the VeryVanilla folder from windows (parallels) since the RedGuide launcher freezes on startup. When I went to run MacroQuest.exe using Crossover's Run Command feature, it said something about compatability layer and showed two of the registry roots with -1, but looked like it still opened? It appears to be running, although I can't access the jump menu since there is no actual systray. If I try opening EQ it is just a black screen. If I try the other way around, as soon as I launch MQ EQ freezes and becomes unresponsive to anything other than Mac force Quitting crossover.

yep, that's as far as I've gotten as well.
The MQ icon will be up at the top on the apple bar and you can get the menu to show but accessing any options is wonky i'm assuming due to the compatibility layer issue. I'm thinking the compatibility layer issue may have something to do with the process stealth protection built into MQ now where it hides the process name under an alias? just a wild guess.

actually,

reading through @Knightly post Steamdeck
he stated we could ignore the Compatability layer error and use the options /noappcompat /injectonce

this did get rid of the error message doing further testing but so far still getting a blank screen when trying to get EQ to Run once MQ is loaded.

Edit:
I had to add a library override for d3dx9_43.dll in the wine config.
I then ran the config on the EverQuest Launcher and left everything as the default options.
hit play and got the server select screen picked server and got to character select.
now just having an issue going from character select to in-game stuck on the progress bar screen.
getting closer.

I tried to run MQ with those options, and nothing seems to happen for me :\

it's just a setting you add on the library tab in the wine configurator you don't actually replace the dll.
seems to be hit or miss though after multiple launches.
Just go to the library tab and type in d3dx9_43.dll and click add.

I had to disable MQ2Dannet. Don't need the d3dx9_43.dll override.
I forgot from before when I used to run it MQ2Danet would cause it to crash.

So now I guess I need to read up on using EQBCS instead?

Would be great if we can get the launcher working too though if only for the ability to download the watched macros and updates easier

Yeah, would be nice to see the launcher work. As I stated before I'm pretty sure it's a glitch with the .Net version that Crossover installs not being fully functional in a 64-bit bottle.

Also, one other issue I noticed is profile importing does not work either.

That's odd all I did was install EQ first then installed DX9 and EQ worked fine.

When you say Win insider 11 arm, do you mean the one that comes native with parallels 18 or did you download a different version?

I’m running parallels 18 pro
I let it install windows arm64, but then I used a personal key to upgrade from windows home to windows pro
I installed a lot of stuff before EQ… all the windows updates; .net framework 4, 4.7,4.8; various development tools for .net.
Not sure if .net is needed for EQ, but might try it.

I installed EQ, then I downloaded the June 2010 dx9 update and extracted into a folder (named mine dx9Fix). Ran the setup file in that folder.

Launched EQ….. it may take a bit the first time for parallels to understand the game (always jittery on first play for me after installing in parallels. Never an issue afterwards)

So today I managed to get this all working across 5 computers on Yelinak (yes! on truebox). REALLY hoping that we can get MQ2Dannet working next. Willing to help in whatever way makes sense for @dannuic. Using MuleAssist and EQBCS for now, but really looking forward to some of the better features of the mesh networking

You only need /injectonce if you're wanting to exit out of the tray util after you launch EQ. If you're launching all of your EQ instances in the same bottle, you probably don't want that. The other switch (/noappcompat) you'll always want under wine.

The dannet issue is most likely sockets. I think I started looking at it before and that's where I ended up. But my wine computer is that steamdeck (proton) and dannet works fine on that. Just pointing you in a direction in case dannuic is also busy this holiday season.

Also, don't use MQ on Truebox. Relaxed Truebox is fine.
 
thanks! I'll look and see if I can figure out what is different between the steam deck version and the crossover Mac version.
And this is the second time I have heard not to use on Truebox. I am wholly unfamiliar with what truebox does, other than restricting me to running one account per computer. Is there a good place to see how and why MQ on a true box server is bad? Is it easier to detect or something?
 
Hello and happy holidays! Is MQ working for you under parallels? I thought I'd get on and do my yearly old content smash through and check how things going here but seems MQ not happy with it. EQ runs fine, MQ no go. Getting this error on startup under win11arm parallels:

If I swap the d3d files in sys32 with standard win11 install from other pc it will stop yapping about that and load to char select and loading but crash right past loading into actual game. Also VS will poop out and not load or let me debug then.. so back to the stock d3d. Tried to take advice and disable Danet as well as Nav and neither seemed to effect it. Haven't managed to get a good debug with VS yet but will keep pokin at it lil bit...

No never could get it too work in parallels got the same error. I just use Parallels to run the Reguides updater and then copy over to my icloud drive then switch back to the mac side and copy from my icloud drive to the bottle drive in Crossover.
 
I stopped once I got it working on crossover. I have some new ideas though now that I have experience with it. I think it may actually be a Lua issue. My wife’s computer (Alienware windows 11 laptop) would crash EQ with this same error when I was trying to get Maui working. I had to go to manually install luarocks and figure out how that whole system worked. Once I got it running on her computer, then manually copied the lfs .DLL out of where I got it running, everything was great. So I planned to investigate the Lua side and see if it’s related.
 
I've run into Lua issues now as well, The Luarocks that comes with MQ crashes and won't install modules. Trying to figure out how to get those modules that some of the Lua scripts require for instance Tradeskill Construction set requires lsqlite3.

Update: Figured it out just had to copy the module folder from the release folder on my PC to the release folder in the crossover bottle c: drive.
