RedGuides needs to implement and release their own paid Everquest EMU server environment. Host it where the lawyers and the Feds have no jurisdiction. Require payment in Bitcoin or Ethereum. Go hog wild with enhancements and updates. Boldly steal and replicate Darkpaw's IP. Rub their noses in it!

emus are cool - I look forward to spending some time messing with emu once MQ is ported over.

unfortunately emu still doesn't solve the reason a good chunk of us box on live servers

This is fairly easy to do and cheap if you want to do it now. The only issue is the Emu database is up to OoW. The files to spin up a server are easily available and you can set the rules as you see fit. Having a copy of the game on emu that is where live is at currently would require manually building all of that yourself or copy of DPGs files. If you want to do the former though, setting up a server and doing some tweaks to things like NPC values or drop rates are very easy to do and guides are available on the EQ Emulator forums.

That's a legal mess, but a good idea.

Project1999 paved the way for TLP servers.

ProjectMQ would pave the way for...

I'd wager DPG might have more of an issue with emulated servers if they were running current content. As they stand I don't think they capture too many of the TLP crowd or those that would play on live so they tolorate them. Wouldn't be surprised if a few people that start up on an emu server make their way back to an official server too.

Definitely this. If they decided that emus take enough money out of their pocket they'd have lawyers shutting them all down first thing in the morning. They'd all have to move hosting to eastern europe like WoW emus do. Now that the company isn't purely a Russian money laundering front you're starting to see them care more about the bottom line.

But for now, emus don't really speak to their subscriber base.

EMUs are just a massive time investment, and eventthat investment doesn't mean it'll be any good or popular unfortunately.

Shards of Dalaya was an incredible emu server, but it was managed very poorly once the original creator/owner left the project for real life business ventures.
The content was great, the raids and group content were great, but as time went on the quality began to wane as older devs left and newer/less experienced ones replaced them.
New developer visions of what the server should be clashed with previous visions and lots of nerfs or encounter changes occurred. Items removed or changed. Special event type things made unavailable for everyone but certain players. Just some wacky things.
It once has close to 400 players nightly, not even prime time. Now it's a ghost town.

Making money off the emu is the quickest way for DPG to come down on the emus hard. DPG has been willing to look the other way all these years. With new ownership I don't think it'd be wise to ruffle any feathers or test the limits.

I agree. Charging people to use an emu is a really bad idea. I'm not even fond of the servers that have pay to win features. I get that they use the funds to keep the servers maintained and such but still. I think if you're gonna run a server, give an option to donate for the server upkeep. Don't require it and certainly don't add pay to win features. I'm gonna zip it now. I think I went a little off topic on that.
