www.everquest.com yields this;

Dear valued SOE Customers,

We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).

Well theres two things obvious A. They were hacked. And B. There never gonna tell u what the hackers were able to retrieve . Soo with that being said. I will be changing all my account info. Password email sq answer maybe even the payment source hehe

Umm, when the PS3 network got hacked, they told the public that most of the personal data was indeed stolen and strongly suggested that those with credit cards attached to their account should have them canceled and reissued immediately. Of course they also said that maybe credit card info wasn't stolen, but they didn't want to to "rule it out" as possible. Also to change passwords on any email accounts connected to it and to be wary of ANY emails that appear to come from Sony about payment issues.

To protect their own arses, they will most likely tell people if information was stolen. If they choose not to, they risk a class action suit that will cost them far more than telling the truth about things. They knew that when the PS3 network got hacked and did the logical thing. Something like 80% of the data was stolen from that and they told their customers about it. But by issuing the warnings and sending out details about it, they protect themselves legally from lawsuits due to negligence.

Thank goodness I go in and change the credit card info to fake info immediately after the charge every 2 years. I did it because I hated the surprise charges, now I have another reason not to allow recurring payments online.

Dear Valued Sony Online Entertainment Customer:
Our ongoing investigation of illegal intrusions into Sony Online Entertainment systems has discovered that hackers may have obtained personal customer information from SOE systems. We are today advising you that the personal information you provided us in connection with your SOE account may have been stolen in a cyber-attack. Stolen information includes, to the extent you provided it to us, the following: name, address (city, state, zip, country), email address, gender, birthdate, phone number, login name and hashed password.

Customers outside the United States should be advised that we further discovered evidence that information from an outdated database from 2007 containing approximately 12,700 non-US customer credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes) and about 10,700 direct debit records listing bank account numbers of certain customers in Germany, Austria, Netherlands and Spain may have also been obtained - we will be notifying each of those customers promptly.

There is no evidence that our main credit card database was compromised. It is in a completely separate and secured environment.

We had previously believed that SOE customer data had not been obtained in the cyber-attacks on the company, but on May 1st we concluded that SOE account information may have been stolen and we are notifying you as soon as possible.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the attack and as a result, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off all SOE game services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

wtf are they doing having a "outdated database" from 2007? or at least put it somewhere that can't be accessed except via intranet and certain ip's.

Amen. I don't understand what type of program Sony is running there, but something like this shouldn't have happened. It's rather pathetic that something like this can happen on a company such as Sony.

What im gonna love is sony trying to put this one the macroquest users. You know they will.

And they said it was impossible . Everytime a person would call about an account that was hacked . I bet whoever did it. Thrres someone right next to them working on blizzards database. Hehe

Does anyone have any info on the downtime or a realy good guess. I've got two days to verify account info on the one i just got. After that playerauctions will assume all is good and close the deal releasing my cash to the seller

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When SOE™'s services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your Station or SOE game account name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

• U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

• We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a "fraud alert" on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

We are committed to helping our customers protect their personal data and we will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in regions in which such programs are commonly utilized.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at (866) 436-6698 should you have any additional questions.

Email playerauctions and tell them EQ is down. They should know whats going on.

who knows, playstation network has been down for two weeks and is still down.. I wouldn't be suprised if EQ is down for a week+

Which kind of sucks because I just took a week vacation... Oh well guess I can finally beat crysis 2.

Considering theres no ETA, and "discovered less than 24 hours ago" on the website. Scares me.

What even scares me more, is how many people won't come back to EQ or yet even subscribe to any SoE game after this. Which will lead to more firings, and more hiring of people who don't speak english.

What makes you think it wasn't? The network was hacked, the hacker likely had full access to their intranet for a time, and spoofing IP addresses is simple enough a novice can do it. Having outdated databases still on connection in a company as big as SoE isn't unheard of.

That's not how this works. If they got credit card info, they have which ones were actually charged, not just the dummy info you entered. They (sony) have to keep a database for every credit card charged for their own financial records.

It has been indicated that the group responsible had a vendetta against Sony specifically. I don't know how true that is, could just be they were the ones that got picked because of how big they are and how much data they had access to. It doesn't really matter, if systems were unhackable, then there wouldn't be so much time and money spent on security. Any system is hackable. It doesn't matter the company. If they had chosen and broken Blizzard instead, you would have a ton of people here pointing and laughing saying they couldn't imagine that happening to a company as tech savy as them.

Sounds about right. Hell every tuesday they bring n a ass load of employees new hires like a heard of cattle and only keeps a few

It was everything else that was hacked so change you passwords when SOE comes back online.

I changed my passwords to my e-mail accounts and plan on changing the passwords to my SoE accounts asap. My main account was not originally mine but I set up the questions etc. so there's not going to be a problem there. I've unsuccessfully, in the past tried to change my shammy/clerics password but since I came into the account via friends, it asks their secret question which I don't have an answer for. Can I call SoE and change the pw with them? Or will they tell me to F off? I've paid for my shammy/cleric for about three years since the orig owner gave it to me so there must be some way.

as long as you have the cc# that you've used to pay for it you can prolly get them to reset it as it's obviously been you paying for it all that time.

According to a report in the San Diego Tribune, the servers could be up by Friday, but perhaps longer as well. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
