Now that everyone has their AC clickies from the War Games anniversary mission (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=7521), inevitably people are wondering how to level the shrouds up so you can get max return from the AC portion of the illusion clicky. I saw someone else mention cleric viral DS and fading kurns on top of their PL'ee and all that, but that is a significant investment in time and effort... and mindbogglingly boring.

This is another method ... if you remember the shroud XP exploit from years and years ago you'll recognize this. I remembered during my time doing that that the shrouds evolved/unlocked REALLY quickly using this method, so after getting my illusion clickies from the War Games mission I went back and did this again.

Step 1: Farm some (2-3 to cover mistakes/deaths) Brazier of Elemental Summoning (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=3611) from Upper Guk. These drop from mobs (Froglok Summoners) that only spawn in 2 spawn points in the northwest area of Upper Guk. Check out alla's for the specific locations (it's in a room with a mob on each side in a little cubby with 3 spawns in the middle, lowered area).

**edit** Open your "LF_AN_toonname_server" file inside your EQ directory. Add this string to the file:
14304^600^Brazier of Elemental Summoning

Now you can afk and the advanced loot feature will loot any braziers that drop.

Step 2: Make a new F2P account (or create a new toon on an account you aren't trying to level the shroud of) and get the brand new toon to lvl 5. Leveling him/her to lvl 5 gives you access to the lvl 5 shrouds from any of the shroudkeepers. This is important because you want your killing toon to be shrouded so they don't level up.

**Note** I don't think this is really necessary, but its how the shroud exp exploit worked, so I just did everything the same because I knew those mechanics would evolve the shroud

Step 3: Shroud your little lvl 5 toon into a lvl 5 bear shroud. This gives you access to a sow-like ability, which helps along the process.

Step 4: Give your shrouded lvl 5 toon the Brazier you farmed from Step 1, click it, and hand your brand new Fire Elemental pet as many mage summoned toys as it'll take. I can confirm it'll take all the lvl 75-81 pet toys, including a 1000hp belt, haste mask, and all the AC gear. It will also take most of the same level jewelry (gives back the +nuke damage ring).

**Note** This pet is summoned from the Brazier clicky, which means it ignores the level of the caster. In other words, your lvl 5 toon now has an mage gear equipped lvl 12 fire pet with a permanent damage shield to ROMP on lower level mobs.

Step 5: Hire a healer merc (while not 100% necessary, it comes in handy to ensure success)

Step 6: Shroud the rest of the toons that you want to evolve the shroud with down to lvl 5, as well. Group everyone up and run through the Guild Lobby to Nedaria (using the Magus)

Step 7: Get the Forgotten Halls expedition (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=5790).

**Note** Use caution when traveling between the quest giver and the zone in!! There are wolves that will likely agro you, which makes for a bad day when you're a little lvl 5 shroud running around. Nothing but the wolves are kos.

Step 8: Zone in! Click the rock (see below) in the bear tunnel area in the north of the zone.

Step 9: I move my toons to the area marked on the forgotten halls map below. This area gives me the most bang for my buck because it has a lot of mobs within reach. I've considered moving my group to the bigger room to the east because it might give more consistency, but honestly, you're only going to be doing this for 9 hours (1.5 expeditions) to max the shroud, so who cares.

Step 10: There is probably a more elegant way to do this next part, but I use a macro someone else gave me a super long time ago to essentially spam a key over and over, sow the pet (if you used the bear shroud on your PL'er), and drink a potion if it gets low on health (I don't do that... I just use the merc). Setup a regular old hotkey like this:

/target npc radius 150
/pet kill

Put said hotkey in the hotkey #1 spot.

Step 11: /macro ZPL

Bumping this now that it's relevant again for the anniversary Plane of War quest.

You mentioned the reverse cleric DS and if you have access to a 105 cleric then this imho is the best option. I got the totem last year but never updated it and because the anni quests are coming back I figured I'd do it now. I took my 105 war and shrouded down to lvl 5 and went to CR. I origin'd my 105 cleric. I cast temperance on the shrouded level 5 warrior and placed him on the skeleton hill in front of the skeletons cave. Because skeletons attack anything in their way I ran the cleric around the hill casting Blood of Vicarum on a few skeletons (blood of vicarum will spread to other mobs around them, so you do not need to cast it on every mob) and would gather about 15 skellies and then train the lvl 5 gnoll standing on the top of the hill. Instant experience.

The skellies die instantly as they hit the lvl 5 also healing him. You will need to occasionally heal the lvl 5 after each train. Also, you will want to clear as many mobs around the hill as possible to ensure that he doesn't get beat on when you pull the cave. Pulling the skeletons from the cave is the same as the hill. I cast BoV on the first couple of mobs at the entrance and run them to the back two rooms of the cave. By the time you gather all the mobs from the cave, there will be atleast 25 mobs in tow. Train your little lvl 5 buddy. He does not have to fight back or even get 1 point of damage. Any damage from the reverse damage shield counts as the PC's damage.

I leveled all 5 shrouds in just under two hours. Of course, you will need access to a cleric and reverse damage shield. If not see above guide.

Also, no one mentioned the affected AC on this now. It use to be 170ish AC iirc, but now the total AC increase from the last patch's AC revamp will only reward a bump of 49 AC iirc. <---I will double check this when I get home from work.
(And the tempest temple coral ds clickie in now only 23 AC.)

It still has the same effect though. The change of display in AC doesn't change the effectiveness of either buff.

I just didn't want people to look on Zam or something and expect to see a 170 AC bump. There isn't enough info out there right now for adjusted AC on previous items like this.

I was still under the impression that the viral DS method was no longer effective, but if it is, then great. If you have a cleric, and have the time to devote, go for it. I prefer my method because once you setup it's AFK in upper guk (not often traveled) and AFK in an instance.

Very effective, but your post is about afking. My method requires you to invest 2 hours of your time. Actually the time required for setting up to afk this with all the running around, making a new character and leveling them to level 5, you might be able to finish the shroud by the time you even enter the forgotten halls instance. haha

*shrug* or take a toon that's already above level 5 from a different account and use that. Only reason I did it that way was I had five shrouds to evolve and didn't want to separate them into different groups. I try to do as much of this tedious bs afk as I can because when I'm playing I'm actually doing tasks and stuff... not f'n with shrouds and all that. It's like the alaran tear... why anyone would want to do that at the computer is beyond me. It's eye-gouging boring. The risk involved is somewhat less because you're in pretty random zones and/or instances.

Thanks man. Just used most of your scheme to evolve 2 shrouds while AFK. Getting the L12 pet potion was brilliant. Then shrouded the 2 toons to 5; added shrouded another toon to 10; got mercs including healer; and placed in a spot where several L5-L12 mobs pop fairly often. Took about a day but it let me do other stuff while they evolved.

Definitely, I guess it just depends on how dependent you are on the toon you are shrouding. In my case it was my main warrior, so the entire crew can't do shit w/o him so I wanted to get through it as quick as possible. Not sure I'd make that effort on the rest of my crew that isn't gear sensitive.

Definitely a good guide for sure

Most likely a stupid question but do you have to be in gnoll form to take advantage of the AC boost the totem gives or just carry totem on you? does anyone know?

As ninalia stated, the buff and the illusion are different icons in your buff box. What I do is buff block the illusion and leave the effect, so when I click it (when I need to... its normally permanent) I'll get the benefit but I don't get the illusion.

used to be a good clicky for doin the illus thru doors thing, cuz as you cycled thru your gnoll forms, it would drop illus, then put the new one up... but DBG went and FIXED that BIG IMPORTANT BUG!

I've been away from EQ for several years, so I decided to try FH again. Anything related to XP is capital Nerfed as far as I can tell. But yes, I did evolve my warrior shroud (Earth Elemental) reasonably fast just by zoning into FH and cutting loose hunter.mac (modified to only target rats). Nothing fancy required, though my method may take longer than some, it's also AFK. It seems like I unlocked about 1 1/2 shrouds in one session, and I don't think it was a full instance session. A DPS merc will dramatically increase the kill rate.

Don't forget that as a L5 shroud, merc upkeep is zero, so go ahead and pop whichever merc you like. DPS is best. Frankly, the rats don't aggro so all you have to do for heals is sit in place for a minute or two.
