Recently my computer has been just straight up crashing. I may be doing whatever, but the monitor just goes blank and the computer restarts. When everything is back up and other programs are starting up, a window comes up saying 'Windows has recovered from a serious error.'

I don't know what the cause is, I haven't installed anything lately, well anything before it started happening. I think it could be my power suppy unit not giving the computer enough power, but if that is true would it even start up?

Its infrequent, but annoying. I don't know what the cause is, so any insight would help.

I had this problem too, I just defragmented my hard disk (its an application that comes with windows) and they've been less and less frequent.

You can find the app under start menu-accessories-system tools I believe (that is if you have a windows PC)

Computers can restart for any number of reasons, from software instability, bad installations, faulty memory, overheating, etc.

Right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Then go to the "Advanced" tab and select the "Settings" button from underneath "Startup and Recovery".

Under the “System Failure” box there will be a check box saying “Automatically Restart”. Un-check this box and then click Ok.

Next time your computer locks up, you should get a stop error. You can either google that or post it here.

Can also go to Run and type "Eventvwr" and see if that tells you anything.

Ok, thanks, I don't know which specific error it would be in the event viewer under system, so next time I will record the exact time the error occures. If I remember, ha. Anyways, I also turned off the auto restart like you said. Hopefully I can fix this. Thank you.

All right, well my computer shut itself down again. For some reason I didn't get the stop error as mentioned, but I did follow those steps. I wasn't at my computer when this happened, and no large programs were running...just multiple tabs in three browsers, and mlb yahoo stattracker.

When I came back, this browser window was open...

Blue screen error caused by a device or driver

You received this message because a hardware device, its driver, or related software has caused a blue screen error. This type of error means the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from potential data corruption or loss. In this case, we were unable to detect the specific device or driver that caused the problem.

From Event Viewer, there is one entry for "Error: System Error", at the time it happened.

From the period of 9:23:26 - 9:24:58 there is a handful of errors, beginning with:

I think its stemming from 'ftsata2' ? There seems to be that same error for the crashes in the past. I'll google it, but if this information tells anybody something, please share with me.
