Yeah, if you want new good content that's unique and pushes boundaries you're probably going to have to go to another MMO at this point. Although, even that is hard to find right now. It's pretty much like you've said; the game is on life support until it stops printing them money and they will spend as little as possible on that life support.
I feel like I've been waiting like 10 years for a good new MMO to come out. The genre just costs so much money to produce a game in that the studios only want to create copy/pasted content that they know has worked in the past. Unfortunately no one wants to play WoW clone 222 so I'm still here playing EverQuest. If you would have told me as a child that I'd still be playing this game because there's literally just not a better game out in my favorite genre, I'd have thought you were stupid. I've played just about every MMO that has been created since 99 and I've had a ton of fun with games along the way, but none has had the longevity that EQ has.
