Army Officer Reservist Program

Hi, wondering if someone can clear something up for me. I have a friend who is considering joining the Officer program in the Army. However , he said he can't get guaranteed a job field go'ing in fulltime.

He heard/read somewhere that if he goes in as an officer in the reserves , he can get guaranteed a job he want's.

So, what he is considering do'ing is joining as a officer in the reserves, getting guaranteed a job (location doesn't matter), just wants a specific job. Then applying to go fulltime.

What he can't figure out and I don't know. I was in the Marines ;) Is how long would it take before he could request to go fulltime ? Are there any other considerations ? Like go'ing fulltime and losing out on something ?

Anyway, anyone with any iformation on stuff like this would be great !!

thanks !!

In order to transfer from the guard to active duty or visa-versa you have to have done 1/2 of your time before they will transfer you.
Don't remember the name they gave the operation though :(

hmm, so that applies to the National Guard ? does the same apply to being in the Army reserves also ? I bet it might, I'll have to try and do more digging to see if it does.

thanks Siddin !

Once an officer goes active duty they are "at the needs" of the Army. I know an officer that started out as artillery .... got moved to intel .... bumped to infantry and now he's back to intel.

Any discussion of Army Reserve Officers MUST include National Guardsmen. While Guards officers DO hold commissions from their respective states, they ALSO hold Army Reserve commissions. They are, from the Pentagon's perspective, Army property assigned to the State's Adjutant Generals. There is a bunch more paperwork to access them into the active Army, but their status is the same once they get there.

The accession of Reserve Officers into active duty, is, as posted above, at the needs of the Army. The number of Reserve Officers on active duty usually exceeds the number of Officers holding what is called "Regular" commissions, i.e. permanent full time, especially in times of active conflict (Iraq?).

If the Army wants officers, they will accept applications from any Reservist who wants in. If the applicant officer meets the Army's age, weight, experience and training criteria, they can expect to "get called." They will, however, be accessed into the TO&E position which, in the Pentagon's sole discretion, fits The Needs of the Army".

Accession into the Army is presumed to be for the "duration" of the Officer's career. Unless he is a screw up, your friend can expect to retire with 20 years active service, doing whatever the Army wants him to do. However, it is not guaranteed. In the event of a Reduction in Force (RIF) as happened after Viet Nam, the Reservists go first.

Please, if you have questions of this nature, you might be better off going to a Reserve Center and talking to the folks who make their living in this millieu. I doubt that there are many of us retired Reserver Officers in this forum. Under any circumstance, it is almost mandatory that you disregard ANY information preceeded by the phrase, "I have heard!"

Make sure and find a recruiter that knows what they are talking about. Ask them this question:

What is meant by an Army of one?

The only right answer is ...

"It is an Army comprised of Officers, Non-commissioned officers, and Enlisted."
