His open letter to us:

Hi (everyone) ,
I’ve been part of EQEmulator for nearly two decades. Most of you know me as Akkadius, but at the end of the day, I’m just someone who fell in love with EverQuest like the rest of you. I still remember when I was little almost 25 years ago, my dad handed me the original EverQuest box after he had been playing it and said, “Hey bud, take a look at this.” That moment pulled us into a world we’ll never forget.

Long before I ever found it, EQEmu was already here - created by passionate players determined to preserve and explore the game we loved. As I grew older and had less time to play, that same passion drew me into emulation: discovering how the game worked, diving into technology, and rapidly developing my skills. In time, I dedicated years of my life to building and supporting the EQEmu project. Along the way, I’ve learned and grown immensely, and I’ve had the privilege of watching so many others do the same.

EverQuest wasn’t just a game - it had a profound and lasting impact on all of our lives. It was friendships, marriages, careers, and entire communities. EQEmu has always been about preserving the experiences official support left behind - old expansions, mechanics, and ways of playing that no longer existed. We built worlds that carried on history, and created new worlds fans dreamed up. I’ve given tens of thousands of hours to this project, but I was never alone - it was all of us, an extended family of passionate fans. Every developer, server operator, tester, player, and dreamer deserves credit for keeping this alive.

The truth is, the environment has drastically changed. For decades, EverQuest’s creators knew about the emulator scene. We weren’t hidden - we were tolerated, even respected. Today, that spirit has been replaced with hostility and lawsuits across the broader emulator scene. Seeing passionate fans treated this way is heartbreaking. I can’t keep devoting myself to something that punishes the very people who kept its spirit alive. I wish the current IP holder the best, but I don’t believe this was the answer - and I don’t think anyone truly wins from it.

So I’m done. I’m stepping away from EQEmu, winding down my projects and the services I’ve hosted, and moving on. As I step back, most services I run will shut down within 72 hours, by Monday Midnight, Tuesday morning. I’ll try to ease the transition where I can, but many things will simply go offline. This truly feels like the end of an era, but every era leaves behind a legacy - and ours has been extraordinary. As the Court has not addressed the scope of the injunction, as recently requested by THJ, my time here has run its course.

This isn’t easy - it hurts more than I can put into words. My heart is shattered. Even before this case, my summer was already filled with personal tragedy and deep loss - the hardest season of my life. I was already struggling to find the energy to keep contributing. I’ve poured countless hours, effort, and stress into this project, and the toll has been immense. But after 18 years, my priority now has to be being a dad, being present for my family, and putting that same fire into new chapters of my life. So regardless of how the climate continues to progress, this is a choice I have made.

I know this may deeply affect some of you, and I don’t say that lightly. Our worlds and communities have been home for countless players and creators alike, and I’m truly sorry for the disruption this will cause. My hope is that the communities who built them can continue in their own way.

I am deeply grateful to the fans of this game, and to this community. We all know how special EverQuest has been - but what truly makes online worlds unforgettable is the people who share them. Thank you to everyone who built, played, created, and dreamed alongside me. EQEmu was never just a project - it was proof of what extreme passion and community can achieve. That legacy will always endure.

Much love,
Akkadius

If I may editorialize, while this is a sad moment, I don't think that doom and gloom is warranted, personally.

Thank you Akkadius, for all of the work you've put in, and for inspiring others to do the same. You are truly a monolith and I wish you the best.

Ez server (Draca) has announced/confirmed shutdown but stated in Monday they may eventually reopen? Seems like they are working on it.

Project Lazarus has completed their migration to new hosting and the server is available.

Convergence: seems to have transferred and be in the process of coming back online.

Raid Addicts: I am not in their discord but I am being told they intended to remain open.

TAKP TLP: I'm told that they already had a server move planned. Guessing they will just move that up.

Edit: I will not be providing updates to this post after Oct 2nd. Most services and servers have been made otherwise available.

Thanks for posting this info Algar, especially when things are rocky, or in flux it is so important to have good consolidated information.

Thank you Akkadius, for all of the work you've put in, and for inspiring others to do the same. You are truly a monolith and I wish you the best.
monolith is the damn truth.

Hopefully things settle and over the next little while some clarity and reinvigorated spirit bring some direction towards continuing the legacy/work

Thank you for the post @Algar !!!! Akkadius, if you read here or a friend passes you messages, thank you for the work and love you have put into your project. I think you have helped make EQ eternal, not fading away. I'm so happy to hear of your time going to fatherhood, the best dedication we can strive for as a man. May your life find you blessed and the name Everquest always bring a smile. From this happy player, thank you.

tremendous loss for the community, but obviously nothing but well wishes for akkadius. no personal connection to him, but i played on multiple servers he was involved in and the options were always fantastic. messed around on a couple of those servers when i was a college student with an absolutely trash frankenstein pc and those are memories that call me back for a decade afterwards. o7 to one of the greats that made it all possible

And hopefully he will someday make that memory for his son/daughter so he/she also will remember when they were little and their dad shows them where to download or maybe even hands me them original EverQuest box like his dad did for him.

May the winds of Tunare blow gently on your future

Well that sucks. His work in the EMU field is amazing and it is what helped me to host my own private server. As the peq loqin servers are coming down, I imagine that will end a lot of other private servers. Was fun while it lasted :/

No, not really.
Eqemulator login server is still there.

The other operators have not yet stated what's happening, some changes may take place. They may restructure a bit, we'll see. EMU would never go away ..change maybe yes, but impossible to disappear. A RedFrog server could appear (example, I am not hosting anything, I am TheDumb and ThePoor) and in a 'changed world' it would be you would be invited quietly, no public stuff etc. EMU is always available to everyone to install on your home pc and just play locally, and mod to your hearts content, 'You're in Your World Now'.

I changed eqhosts.txt file in my client director as below and it worked.

[LoginServer]
Host=login.projecteq.net:5999

to

[LoginServer]
Host=login.eqemulator.net:5999

I changed the hosts file as above but do not see my server listed. Will have to figure that out.

Just took some time for my server to show up on the new login server. This is settings from Spire Server Config Tab.

I've updated the second post with some news.

Please don't forget to switch over from PEQ login server to eq emulator login server at some point.
I expect the uptime and stability on the emu login server this week will be the litmus for how many servers begin using private logins.

I'm just going to steal this pic from @us3rn4m3 . Cheers!

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. I played on Convergence with Jay. I have been playing with him since Rizlona. I do not have a lot of experience with you and your creations I know that you helped Convergence become a fun server for us. I wish the best for you and thank you for the memories.

I will preface this with the fact that I am not currently really in the emu scene. However I do have some hosting abilities on prem.

If someone needs something that is about to disappear or already has from public availability PM me and I'll see if I can help.

Cheers my dude. A new emu server discord has been set up and people are all over it! It is very kind of you to offer!

wow. what a loss. I just started venturing into the emulator scene at the beginning of the year. Bummed that it's fading away seemingly.

Losing Akkadius is huge, I really enjoyed the stability and ease he brought to the scene. akk-stack had me running a TLP in under an hour.

Yikes!
That's just ridiculous.
Going to update the second thread today, but it looks like Convergence is back up and EZ will/should be soon.

Sad to see Daybeak flip the switch and go full bloodthirst mode for almost no reason. It isn't like they don't pull ideas from Emulators <IIRC in game bots were an emu feature long before Mercs were added into EQ>. Everquest one unique feature is it is very simple in design. Which for emulators makes it extremely flexible to create totally unique worlds, zones, and experiences. Its too bad DBG just can't seem to realize that some people **want** to play their game, but a bit different be it playing solo with 5 actual smart bots or rolling a toon on a completely unique take on their favorite game. I would have thought they would have learned that with TLP going more into custom scene, but they seem to only take it as far as a toe in the water.

<3 Wish all the best to the EQEmu community, always loved seeing what things they could come up with.

Whether you agree with their decision or not I think to call it bloodthirst for no reason is unfair. I also think perpetuating that idea is probably damaging to the everquest community the emu community and by extension the macroquest community.

Just my thoughts

That is a different twist in what I have been reading online.
I may have to ponder your thoughts some more on this topic.

THJ (per whatever documents) were making a very substantial amount of money by (again whatever documents - I'm not a lawyer, nor am i passing moral judgment here) significantly changing "everquest" to be something different than what "everquest" is. The people who own everquest were like "no thanks".

"bloodthirst" seems unfair.

I've actually avoided reading as much of the internet arguments about the case as I can :p

@Knightly would you think that saying it was "full bloodthirst for almost no reason" would be reasonable or fair?

I fall on the side of IP owner with regard to making money off their products, while I support EMUs I do not support making profit off someone else's work, costs to run sure profit no. The minute daybreak shutdown the servers then that opinion would change with regarding profit.

To me it is no different than some of the paid plugins here being used by non-subscribers and the authors not being paid for their work.

Not to stray too far from the original post - I think the loss of Akkadius is a lot bigger than just re-hosting a bunch of sites. His work and his passion and his ingenuity and probably most of all his positivity within the EMU community will be what the community misses. And while I applaud the cast of thousands who have shown up to help re-establish what he had done I am a bit worried that anyone is going to step in and continue in his path into the future. I'm going to try and ride some of the Algar optimism for a revitalization!

Absolutely a valid concern. I am definitely trying to hold on to those silver linings.
I try to remind myself that sometimes the big tree in the forest may stunt the growth of some of those smaller ones nearby. Of course, I still have secret hopes that the big tree will be able to contribute in the future, if that is what he wishes to do!

Very sad news.
Akkadius was putting a lot of energy into EMU.
However no one without the right mind want to be associated in a copyright lawsuit in a hobby activity.

Does anyone have a copy of the Server installer? I would like to set up my own lan-based for my kids and I to play on.

The emu community discord can be found here and should have links to everything you need, along with friendly support.

Difficult part of this whole situation is a simple C&D would have sufficed. Instead, DBG decides to take THJ to court and what they list in the case applies to every other server out there. Things like circumventing their login server, adjusting client files, and even calling out the use of their NPCs (yes Lady Vox is listed in the court docs.)

That is why everything is shutting down. So while, yes, THJ made a lot of money, how they were doing it is actually quite tame in comparison to many servers, some which are still in existence today.

The things you could get from donation rewards on THJ?

-Server wide buffs and bags. (I may be missing something cosmetic related, I haven't played in awhile.)

Compare that to other servers, whom have been in operation for many years, where you can get BIS weapons/armor or you actually need to donate to acquire GM assistance.

Yes, DBG was extremely bloodthirsty. And they may have single handedly destroyed their own IP.

This is more or less my opinion as well. I acknowledge that DBG was fully within their rights to have THJ shut down, but they could have gone about doing so in a lot of ways that would have been better both for THJ and DBG. Choosing to go straight to a lawsuit without even attempting to open a dialogue was shitty of them, even if they were within their rights to do so, and seems like it's shooting themselves in the foot. But then again, DBG seem to really enjoy shooting themselves in the foot so we shouldn't be particularly surprised.

I have read so many opinions from so many assholes on this that it's helped me to formalize mine into something pretty succinct.

THJ was fun and people had fun playing and it is understable that they are sad it is gone.
The people that own or operate EQ have (often?) made decisions that suck, and seemingly continue to do so.

That being said, THJ capitalized on the nostalgia people feel for EQ (EQ built that nostalgia, not THJ), used it to rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars, then more or less tried to throw every single part of the emu community under the bus when they started trying to squirm out of action against them.

Good riddance.

EverQuest lawsuit reaches settlement with threat of $3.5M in damages against emulator operators

TL;DR they cannot talk about it or do anything with the files etc. or they have to pay the 3.5 mil.
I was on their 'After THJ' Discord and just saw:

@everyone

Dear friends,

Unfortunately, this chapter of our story is coming to a close. The Legend’s Rest Discord will be shutting down within the next 48 hours, and as you may have already noticed, conversations have been disabled.

This is one of the steps we are taking to satisfy the requirements of the settlement agreement we reached with Daybreak. Please note that we may not discuss the other details of the settlement, so please do not ask. We will not make any additional statements about this matter or the settlement at any point in the future.

We know this is not the outcome you were hoping for, but we did all we could to keep this space and what was built here alive. However, it is time for everyone to move on to their next journey.

We want to give special thanks to our team at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, without whom we may have simply crumbled under the sheer weight of this situation. Their diligence and care are something we will never forget.

To our supporters, your outpouring of love and messages made some very bleak nights bearable. You will never truly know how much each message has meant.

We know that many of you found a home in the community that grew here, as did we. Please know that feeling of belonging is not tethered to this space; it is tethered to the heart.

As we venture out to find a new home, we hope that the next chapter of our lives is filled with friends even half as good as the ones we made here.

Journey well, heroes.

-Kris and Alex
I like Robin Hood and Sailing the High Seas and all that, but these guys... lol. If they played their cards differently, they would not make enough to buy a house in cash, but still would easily afford hitting Costco and not have DBG after them.
