I thought this would be an interesting topic, as all of us here im sure are like this websites namesake (i myself only have a paltry lvl 70 rogue, and 4 other level 60s).

http://www.wowinsider.com/2007/03/01/obese-gamer-collapses-dies-after-marathon-gaming-session/

So anyway, apparently a chinese gamer died of a weeklong gaming session, reuters says hes a "online addict" and the author of the above article exclaims "Why doesn't the headline say "Food addict dies"?" (he was also over weight).I thought that was pretty funny (as in fuck thats odd funny, as opposed to haha funny)

To me it seems that the only thing more common than news about gaming addiction iis the constant rebuttal that this is bullshit. But is it ? online games are a pretty good escape from reality for a while (as opposed to lets say.. a week). Looking at other things that traditionally had this effect we can see good old alcohol and drugs, both of which have people who used them, and people who are flat out addicts. Most people seem to take responsibility when it comes to these that you should be careful in how much you use.

Dont you think its reasonable for people to start thinking the same about games, as in, "wow iv been playing this for a week solid, maybe i should like examine my life" as opposed to "lolroflz its only a game".

And yes i know wow isnt as bad as heroin, and yes i know the vast majority of gamers are fine, but the world seems to be full of vulnerable people, and shouldn't the gaming media be a bit more inclined to say yes, people do die because there lives are depressing and they`d rather try and live in azeroth 24/7.

Those who have indulged in sweets to a threshold over 300 pounds must not feign shock when death is their reward.

We love snacks more than anyone we know, and we eat of the worlds wonders without a second thought, but there is due cause as to why both of the houses we own have extensive gymnasiums within them.

This is just like some guy in my class who MAKES Runescape runes out of clay, then tells people's fortunes. He also believes that he can "wind strike" me and deal 5 damage, thus killing me. If people can be addicted to Runescape, then it comes as no surprise that online games have claimed yet another life. I mean if you play you should really try and keep in shape (or at least not so fucking overweight.)

Perhaps for those who have trouble, a rule could help. We would say that for one to play warcrafts crusade for 3 hours time one must earn that time with remittance of one hour in a gymnasium.

Under such a plan those who play for so much will become cakes of cut stone as men and women will be in imitation of the finest greek statues!

I agree that it seems that the writer of for Reuters has ascertained that this addiction to online gaming has killed this poor man, without examining external factors.

The fact that this is not the first time somebody has died from "over-gaming" calls into question the MMO world and whether or not it causes unhealthy addiction, but I'm sure psychologists would have a different spin on things.

Psychological addicts (people addicted mentally, not due to any chemical or physical side effect of their addiction) tend to have an inherently addictive nature so they will nearly always be addicted to something in some way.

This can often stem from loneliness or anxiety and the need some form of outlet to combat the symptons of these feelings.

Therefore it is unfair to blame the Internet or MMOs as they are only the conduit for the channeling of these feelings, a medium to alleviate stress and not always the cause of addiction, but rather the solution to other deep seeded mental issues.

The problem arises when you realise how little support there is for Internet and MMO addiction in place.

You have; gambling, smoking, drug and alcohol related support programs, Government funding and awareness programs for these and enough social awareness that people can handle these and see them for the issue they are.

There is little (if any) knowledge, funding, support and awareness for these "new-age" addictions of the Internet and MMOs and so people with them are forced to suffer in silence.

So yes, Internet and MMO gaming addiction exists and can be detrimental, but they are not the cause of addiction and shouldn't be blamed. To combat this more services and funding should be introduced to aid with addictive behaviour.

Also family, friends, etc. should take note of how this addiction can be damaging and intervene, just like if it were drugs, because if they are suffering from addiction to something like this, they probably have more deep-seeded issues.

Edit: Tried to get rid of "wall of text" feeling

Next time he does that, force-feed the little runes down his retarded gullet, and when he 'wind strikes' you, 'bitch slap' him across his stupid face. There was a kid who did this in my junior high, many years ago, (like 10) except he thought he could cast spells like a wizard or some crap, and he claimed to practice Wicca. When I laughed in his face, he threatened to cast a spell on me. I laughed again, and so he started saying some mumbo jumbo, and I punched him in the face.

Keep in mind, in Junior high, I was about 5 foot 5, and weighed about 110 lbs. This kid was bigger than me, and I didn't give a shit. The very insanity of this ridiculousness pissed me off to the extent that I broke some kid's nose.

I have been playing video games of verious shapes and sizes since I was 3, and yet I can still tell the damn difference between "fantasy" and "reality". If these people can't, then they deserve every single consequence (even death) that comes with it. Natural Selection at work.

Natural Selection at work.

The problem is natural selection doesn't work anymore as we have too many drugs designed to keep people alive much longer than they should be. This is why we're seeing a rise in the stupidity of children as they are the result of natural selection being denied and all the idiots still being alive and breeding.

WoW has 8 million subscribers, that someone, someday dies while or just after playing is going to happen a few times. Doesn't mean the game killed him. People die every day, let them at least 'go out' happy, after a week of gaming...

And for fucks sake, I'm sure there are plenty deaths from people who eat lard all day, sitting at home only watching TV, and then getting a heart-attack or something. I don't hear the TV getting blamed for that!?

So goddamned pissed off about that gaming kills. Wow, a few people die while playing games a year? OHNOSE! People die, while playing games, while watching TV, while standing around doing NOTHING. Gaming only kills if your game character magically reaches out of your monitor and fricking strangles you!

If they chose to cremate this guy, would it stinkof fried wonton and pork?

...just wondering, that's all.

Me and my friends will have endless amusement doing this!

You know I would love to find a study that compares the number of folks who die from being "sports addicts" as opposed to "gaming addicts". I'd be willing to wager more people die (even percentage wise) playing sports than die from sitting on their asses playing WoW. *shrug*

I would believe this to be true also. Consider all the "backyard wrestlers" and such. C'mon, you can't tell me NONE of them have died from jumping off of a 3 story building to land on their buddy who was laying on a weak table. :shitfan:

Hahahahaha you only got 5 hp noob.

This topic is waaaay too serious.

Last year a 35yr old from work dropped dead doing something he loved....no, not playing WoW, he was running..yes! for the fun of it!

He exercised everyday, he loved it. And he died from it. Did we hear any resulting howls from the media about how this guy was addicted to exercise and that something has to be done about it immediately? No.

I'm not saying that WoW is good for you per se but escapism is well known to reduce stress levels and stress is a major killer in todays society.

The point is that Exercise-Man above inherited a weak heart. I'm not saying that the Dead-WoW guy was similarly cursed. Very probably going a week without sleep would kill you but then again the world record for staying awake is considerably longer than one week.

It's all horseshit.
Like I tell my wife. People can develop obsessions about practically anything. If I weren't really into WoW I would be reading Sci-fi books for a similar amount of time, or gardening, or going to the gym, or playing my guitar.

I can hear you guys thinking that all of the other things are more productive than playing PC games.

However, if I spent the same amount of time doing them rather than playing WoW it wouldn't matter a shit to my wife cos she still wouldn't see anymore of me.

Studies have proven that ppl who play PC games have better peripheral vision, better reaction times and also resist senility for much longer as they get older (depending on the game).

Colektuz is right though. You should learn to combine WoW with other activities.

WoWInsider did an article last year about a guy who had removed his PC's PSU and hooked it up to a exercise bike so that as long as he cycled his PC was powered and he could play WoW. He lost something like 2 stone (30 lbs) in a couple of months of playing WoW.

The MMO addiction

Everything is a toxin. Too much of anything can kill you. This is a big personal choice issue here. Some stupid fuck shoots themself in the face with pistol, so now pistols are bad. Some dipshit can't keep his recreation time separate from his serious time and overdoses on cocaine after his wife divorces him over his porn addiction. Shit like this happens all the time. Everyday. And in our modern days society, it's easier to pass the buck. Most of the time, it's passed because some liberal out there is afraid if we tell someone the truth, like he was a fat lazy person with no ambition in life other than end game raiding and becoming a WoW GM one day, we might just hurt somebodies 'feelings'. Piss on that shit.

Fact of the matter is, it is just easier for his parent to blame the game than to blame themselves. Maybe if less people were like "Video games causes violence, obesity, etc., and more were like "Get your ass off the computer and go outside and play today, son, it's a beautiful day" we wouldnt be having a discussion about it.

Basically, you reap what you sew.

Hence my argument in http://www.notaddicted.com/forums/showthread.php?t=929 that fat people should be called fat, because they are! No sugarcoating please! (Well maybe they should say that more often)

Hello. My name is Deafdumbandblind and I am fat. Not freakishly fat like some of them behemoths you see on TV who can't move without a heavy lift crane - more like overweight.

Actually you could say I'm big-boned. I played rugby for like 25 yrs so there's a lot of residual muscle under all this lard. So I've got a BMI of 33, that scale is crap anyway. I mean I'm 6' tall and ideally I'm supposed to be like 13½ stone / 190 lbs??? Yeh right! I'm 17 stone / 238 lbs now! If I weighed 190 lbs you'd be able to see my ribs! I would qualify for humanitarian aid.

Upon reflection I'm not fat at all, merely beefy.

we prefer "people of size" plz.

My lawyer will be contacting you with a bill for my emotional distress over that vile "sugar coating" crack.
