Effective in zones where the mobs don't run at low health: In particular, Grieg's End. I solo here as a 68 ranger with my merc (If you can call that soloing).
Start by pulling two rooms worth of mobs - as many as ten. Get them to line up in front of you by backing up and using the overhead view (press f9 once). When they are all EXACTLY in one line in front of you, cast Hail of Arrows. It is a very narrow cone AE, but will do 300-1000dmg to each mob. That's as much as 3-10k per cast! If you are also wearing thorncoat, prot of the wild, & skinspikes, you'll do an additional 100+ dmg on each. My primary weapon has a lifetap proc. About 1/3 of the mobs will beat themselves to death on your DS, and another third will fall to the arrows.
Really gotta have that tier V merc tho - With lesson on, I can rack up 10 AA.
UPDATE - really cool if you have the Archery Mastery and Headshot AA's...
