I got a project I been working on for a few weeks now. I admit I'm sort of a noob to linux/unix. I tried to do it on my own, but I got stuck. The part below is not the part I'm stuck on. Read further if you wish. The part I'm stuck on will be much farther down, but I gotta bring you up to speed first.

I got my ps3 (60gig) system and from what i'm told it has linux already installed as an inferior version that you can't do much with. I'm in the process of downloading YDL 5.0 for my ps3. I also have a sony 1gig usb flash drive and have more than two kinds of dvd burners. I'm kind of linux noob and need help to figure out how i can play eq1 on my ps3. ideas and sugestions would be nice. thanks.

To those of you who are not aware about linux on ps3, here you go:

Instructional Video from a fellow game fan:
http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/7770

http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html
This link has an instruction and where to download installer for YDL 5.0.

And you can download YDL (Yellow Dog Linux) 5.0 (This version was specifically designed for ps3. They do charge for it, but you can download it from free) here:
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/downloads.shtml

You need a keyboard and mouse to install.

And if your missing files or need extra help, use these links as well.

1. go to http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html to install the boot loader installer.

2. go to http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/installation/ps3/otheros.bld to install the actual boot loader.

3. go to one of the following:
http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/yellowdog/iso/
ftp://ftp.yellowdoglinux.com/pub/yellowdog/iso/
and download the YDL 5.0 installer.

One minor detail not mentioned here is the fact that in order to burn the image, you need a dvd burner program that supports larger than the 2gig buffer, meaning that Nero will not add a 3.5 gig file to the list to be burned, it tells you that the file is too big and find a smaller file. I know this because I have Nero. So I used the program found here: http://www.imgburn.com/ It's free! Enjoy.

4. burn the YDL 5.0 installer ISO image to a DVD, using a DVD BURNER!!

5. download and read the instruction manual before attemption to install YDL 5.0 to your PS3:
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/installation/

6. Back up all of your game saves, downloads, media, etc. before installing YDL 5.0

If you need a bigger selection of mirrors to download the YDL 5.0 ISO from, you can find them here:
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/downloads.shtml

Ok now that you've got linux setup on the ps3, and you know what you're doing, you're up to part where I'm stuck.

Now in order to run everquest on linux, without a recompile or something or other as far as I know, you need software that emlulates windows games and ports them to linux/unix. Because there are already alot of bugs in everquest and for best compatability, I found this company: http://www.transgaming.com/ and they basically port stuff from windows and mac and every other operating system to linux/unix so you can run it pretty good without crashing.

I'm installing transgaming softwate to my ydl 5.0 on ps3 and I had no trouble installing python latest version. but i'm having trouble installing gtk2. The main problem with installing this is all the Dependencies and not knowing what exactly I need. Ps3 runs ppc64 version of yellow dog 5.0 and the only 64 that wine supports is amd, so i'm not sure if i use alpha or linux version. this is all very confusing since i'm so new to linux.

the site says that after the first run that the wizard does everything you need to get going, but without having pre-install tasks done properly, cedega will not even run. any helpful info would be nice. pref someone willing to make an effort with this, because I'm also posting all my work publically on forums, to help anyone wishing to run eq1 on their ps3. thanks for your time. have a nice day.

I'm not sure if these links will work, because I had to login in to their site to get this stuff. Just try it and let me know if you can't access it.

I thought since you guys answered my other questions, that this would be the place to ask, so there you go. any help is apreciated, as of right now I'm stuck right here and have been unable to install the emulator for everquest and can't figure out what I did wrong, what i'm missing or what not. it seems like this thing requires alot to setup.

Cedega's support for EverQuest isn't exactly what I might call very stable. I never got it to run very well (when I managed to get it to run) when I tried it.

i couldn't get it to run at all. I once got to the wizard they speak of and i forget what happend after that, think i was intoxicated. well basically I can't get it to repeat that screen again and I been trying for 2 weeks straight to reinstall libraries or anything else i could think of that i forgot and I just don't know. I had to take a break, I'm playing norma l games on my ps3 atm. but eventually when I'm bored and wanna go back and try again, hope I can do it right, if not, worst possible situation, I find another program I can use to run eq and would like to find it for free in source code, and I can always figure out how to compile it later. just a longterm project.  :( :drink :eq1

I would find it interesting if you got it working, but at the same time I wouldn't want to do it myself.

I already have a PC I play on(My WinXP box), and have my PC I do everything else on (My Linux Box) and pull up and box a character if I have too.

If you are doing it for bragging rights great, otherwise it's 2 different levels of emulation, unless the version of linux and Cedega and linux you have is built for whatever archetecture the processor of the PS3 is, because call me stupid but I'm pretty sure it isn't x86, or 64.

well the linux distro was designed for ps3, the 5.0 version anyways. if u don't believe me, check their site. links provided above. I have every intention of providing all my resources. ;)

cedega on the other hand was not designed for ps3, just linux and not the distro i'm using, so it's hard to get this right, even with all the resources everyone else using it has.

basically what i'm looking for from this post is advice, advid programmer to the pro's. Since vista came out, i really hate it and after windows xp is no longer supported, I'm prob never going to use windows again. so i need a replacement os and it's not gonna be mac, so something else must do. I need to get started learning programming and linux or unix seems like an obvious choice, free compilers and plenty of free stuff to get me started. I've already started learning the interface.

could you guys review distros for me? like sugest what would be the best one? some say redhat, some say mandrake, what you prefer?

after doing minor internet searches, I found a redhat distro that is completely free and must be better than yellow dog, so far yellow dog support has been krap, just like transgaming's support.

the version of red hat distro I'm considering installing for dual boot is: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/

it looks like it's setup pretty neat and suports both consumer and professional, and also supports intell 32 and 64 formats.

Let me know what you guys think, i want to hear your thoughts.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but figured I'd ask your progress on this, daemon?

I work on SuSE Enterprise/OpenSuSE and Red Hat Enterprise/Fedora, so if you need any help, just holla...

I'm sure Sony would love to catch pictures of ppl playing PC MMO Games on their PS3.

Yeah daemon, what’s the status of your project. I have been toying with the idea of trying the same thing but on my Xbox. Not for every day playing but just to see if I can do it.
